“Savoy Gardens Hotel, Funchal. Exellent !”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 July 2012

This was our first visit to this hotel & the island, and we loved them ! hotel staff ALL very friendly and speak good english. the room was a side view ( mountain view ) No 212, but you could also see the sea, the balcony was small but this was not a problem to us. cleanliness was good, food was fine for us, with every night having a different theme. drinks were a little dearer than outside bars. Our favorite bar was the " hole in one " just down the road, as it had a great atmosphere, decent prices, and friendly/ efficient staff, a must visit place ! ! ! The hotel has good swimming pool, kept nice and clean, and jacussi on top floor is spot on, and there is a large sunbathing area there aswell. My only critisism is that the hotel is up a VERY steep bank, and i think the hotel should have a courtesy bus as everyone we spoke to agreed this was a problem. However this would not stop me CONSIDERING useing this hotel again. the only other negative comment is that for a 4 star hotel , i was surprised they had'nt got a gym ! ! !

Room Tip: Higher floors facing Funchal have excellent views, but probably cost more, worth it if you don't...

The Savoy Gardens Hotel is a lovely hotel. Extremely clean. Rooms are spacious.
We were lucky to be in room 219 which was booked as a "mountain view" room but as it was on the side of the hotel we actually had a sea view. Mind the balconies are pretty compact & dont give you much room to manoeuvre round the table and chairs!

The hotel is very expensive for drinks and snacks. A bottle of house wine is €16 which you can buy the same brand in the local supermarket for €2!! So we ended up using the rooms fridge & buying our own drinks for the room / roof top terrace (yes we were that dishonest but they shouldn't put such a mark up on the drink). TIP FOR FELLOW TRAVELLERS.... Pack a bottle opener! All supermarket wines are corked so we ended up having to buy one (2 other couples said they'd had to buy one too). The local supermarket is in the Lido area, called Pingo Doce.

The trips.... Don't use Thomson, they are so over priced compared to how much you pay with a local firm. We used Happy Tours which are based on the Lido shopping centre. The Nuns Valley trip we paid €10 each, Thomson charged €27 each & whilst we were on the trip our mini-bus followed the Thomsons bus on the same route! Then we did the North West tour with Happy Tours, we paid €22 each, Thomsons charged €47 each!
The tour reps chat on day 2, don't believe her when she says it'll take 30 mins - we were in there over an hour!

The hotel is lovely but would've been even lovelier if it had been a couple of banks further down. The walk from the marina was pretty intense in the heat. Those with walking difficulties will struggle to go anywhere out of the hotel without having to use buses / taxis.

I feel the need for a special mention to the omelette cooking station at breakfast.... If you're "lucky" to be the only person in the queue at breakfast you'll wait about 7 minutes for one to be cooked (I timed it) - if you're second in queue give it 15 mins!! It became a bit of a joke by the second week. Think they really need a hot plate so they can cook several at the same time (like in the RIU we stayed in last year)

Rooftop terrace - we spent most of our holiday on the terrace, as it had comfy double beds to lie on. Though we managed to get one most days I was amazed at how many people started reserving them & then disappearing for hours leaving their towels!

Overall, it was a lovely hotel but after 14 days was sick of the banks.... But then the roof top terrace had the most amazing panoramic views of Funchal because of it.

Very relaxing holiday. great hotel , the rooftop area for sun bathing and views are brilliant also the whirlpool jacuzzi up there is very good. The hotel and staff at this hotel are great and the hotel was perfect for couples , No Kids .Very clean throughout food was very hot and good choices.i would recomend this hotel to anyone. Also it had great views of Funchal from all the sea facing rooms ,which we had and we loved the privacy on our balcony. We love walking during our holiday which came in handy when walking back to the hotel up the very steep slope, but saying that Funchal is a lovely walk from the hotel and takes about 15 mins to reach the harbour which you can see cruise ships docked up.The No 24 bus comes right past the hotel if you dont fancy the walk back to the hotel. All in all a very good holiday.

Room Tip: If you want a great view ,pick a sea facing room as the hotel is very high up and this makes the vie...

This was our 3rd visit to this fantastic hotel. Our 1st in the summer. The hotel and staff are as good as ever. If not better. From the moment you check in to check out all the staff are friendly and efficient. Especially the restaurant staff and Bar staff. (Ladies watch out for Ricardo!)
We e-mailed the hotel before arrival requesting our favourite room and they duly obliged. I won't say no more other than a high floor with a sea view. The fridge and safe are still free to use as is the computer in the TV room with Internet access. However they have now intorduced WI-Fi with a fee which some guests found annoying. It didn't really bother us though. They also still have the petty charge for replenishing Tea/Coffee which once again if you take your own there is no problem.
The one thing that hasn't improved (In fact it has got worse) is the entertainment provided by Thomson. Now it has become a 'Couples ' hotel from a Gold they have not only cut back on the amount of entertainers there is also no professional cabaret act other than local dancers etc. The day time programme was fairly erratic. They published a weekly programme but very often they didn't stick to it which can be annoying. However the laid back day time entertainment did produce a peaceful atmosphere around the pool all day which is a bonus.
We didn't do any trips with Thomson. We did a couple with Happy Tours which are opposite the Lido. They do have their own website which can be googled before you go to get the location. The cost with Happy Tours (For 2) was €88. The equivalent cost with Thomson would have been €148. The guides were extremely proffessional and prompt. Plus with Happy Tours you are picked from your hotel in a mini bus with maximum16 seats whereas Thomson use a large coach which does not pick you up from the hotel. They appear to have grown very greedy with the mark up they apply to these excursions.
All in all a great hotel that we feel is being let down by Thomson's cost cutting.
My only gripe with the hotel is there is no gym.

Room Tip: Go for a high floor sea view if you can but avoid Thomsons trips.

just returned from the savoy gdns lovely rooms nice pool area lovely sunbathing area on the roof with a jacuzzi food was ok some days better than others entertainment was a bit boring but found two good pubs called hole in one and the white house just 5 mins away were the prices for the drinks were half the price of the hotels you always expect hotel prices to be a bit higher but they were a bit steep just like the bank you have to get up to the hotel which is a bit harsh on the old calf muscles all in all a relaxing holiday but i would not recommend funchal to anyone under 40 weather was hot when the sun got out but dont expect wall to wall sunshine as it has a lot of cloud coming in from the mountains. recomend the cattaraman trip 30 euros for 3 hours saw a family of dolphins and went swimming off the boat.

Room Tip: pay the extra for a sea view as the views are outstanding

Have just returned from a weeks stay at the Savoy Gardens where we had a fabulous time. We picked this hotel because it is couples only. A lot of the guests where a similar age to ourselves (early fifties) quite a few where older. Only a handful of young couples, so if you want a lively young crowd probably not the hotel for you. However, we met up with some great, lively people around our own age and made the most of the evening entertainment. This, in lots of ways is the best thing about the hotel. After a days sightseeing and a lovely dinner we just didn't feel like going out but with the great entertainment team there's really no need to. Matt and Sarah, the resident singers gave us a great show every time. Always full of fun, both have great voices and Matts guitar playing is fab. Very willing to sing requests. Many thanks again guys for singing our song on our 30th Anniversay and again on the sunday. The wonderful Jen (sadly for those of you still to visit she has returned to the UK) has the most amazing classically trained voice. She gave us a great range of songs with one opera number that took our breath away. Carl, the entertainment co-ordinator was a revelation on sun night. He had provided lots of laughter all week and then on our last night he sang brilliantly. Still got some comedy in there, but what a voice!! Every one of them took the time to come and speak to everyone. Matt and Sarah had long chats with our little group (nicknamed the royal box) after there performances and couldn't have been friendlier. Thanks to all of you once again. To anyone who visits the hotel do give the magnolia lounge a try. In my opinion not enough guests do. All the hotel staff were great, some were friendlier than others. Riccardo, a great barman. Some people are just more outgoing. Everyone was always helpful and polite. Jose, the maitre de was always charming . We were there on a half board deal but treated ourselves to the a la carte one evening. This was wonderful. As it happened we had the small a la carte section (its a screened off section of the main restaurant overlooking the pool area) to ourselves and Jose serving us all night. The food was lovely and a nice change from the buffet. We noticed that most nights there were only one or two couples in there, so although you do pay a supplement its definitly worth doing. The buffet had a good range of dishes. There was only one night I struggled to find a main course. But I am a fussy eater! Would have loved more fish dishes and it would have been great if the bacon was more like ours. A bit too much like streaky bacon for my taste. The desserts however were always lovely. We had a large sea view room on the second floor with a balcony big enough for a table and two chairs. The balconies are cleverly designed so that you don't feel overlooked. Lots of people have commented on the huge beds. Ours was indeed enormous. We have a superking at home and this was even bigger. I found the mattress on the hard side being used to memory foam, but my husband loved it. Lots of hanging space but not a lot of hangers was the only problem with the room. Maid service was excellent. Hayley, our thomson travel advisor in the hotel gave a good tour of the hotel the first night we arrived. One thing no-one seemed to expect was that official check in time is not until 4pm and we arrived about lunchtime. As all of us had been up since about 4am to catch our flights, that info was a bit of a body blow. However the staff work as fast as they can and our room was ready after we had had a light lunch in the bar area. This really was the only negative experience we had so its not that bad. The hotel is at the top of a hill, but then it is on Madeira!! Lots of very steep hills (and I do mean STEEP). Its a pleasant walk into funchal (downhill) St Catherine's park is a good place to stop for a breather if needed and definitely a taxi back. The cheapest we had was 5 euro and the dearest 7. A cheap price to pay considering the heat and the hills! If you book a taxi through the hotel it is always more expensive. Every one we had was at 4.50 on the meter when it arrived. If you pick up one on the street it started with 2.50 on the meter. So just be aware. There is a bus stop very close to the hotel if you prefer. Buying water is cheapest at the supermarket (there's one down the hill or in the shopping center on the lido) its only 1 euro for a five litre bottle. We just decanted it into smaller bottles and kept in the room fridge. The fridge is empty when you arrive although you do get one courtesy bottle of water on your tea making tray. You can get a bottle from reception at 1.50 euro to keep you going until you get to the supermarket. As some other reviewers have said your tea making tray is not replenished after the first day unless you pay for it. We took our own tea bags with us. There are lots of excursions available through Hayley, but there's no pressure to book them. The flavours of funchal is a good one as its a half day tues. It gives you a chance to get the lay of funchal. Don't be put off by the visit to the embroidery business, you don't have to go in, you can just wander on your own and meet up back at the coach ready for the next part. I would urge everyone to go on the toboggans. Its unique to Madeira and not as scary as it looks. We did the botanical gardens and the monte palace gardens. Didn't think the Botanics were that great. Beware if unsteady on your feet. Very rough, steep surfaces. The Monte Palace gardens, while just as steep were definitly worth the effort and all the paths were better maintained. Beware, the sunday jeep safari that you book with Hayley(sorry Hayley). Be prepared to sit on bench seats in the back on a very bumpy route. Great guide, who did say at the beginning to change seats at the different stops. However this gets difficult if, as in our case, you have elderly passengers with mobility problems. You can't expect them to clamber into the back. We still enjoyed it but you can't see very much from the back and the final destination of the market is very poor. Try one with one of independant tour operators would be my advice. We have had a wonderful holiday, which was largely due to the hotel, the entertainment team and of course beautiful, unique Madeira. Best of all are the wonderful friends we made and memories of our nights in the magnolia lounge. Fellow residents of the royal box you know who you are!!

Room Tip: Rooms at the front give the sea views and on the nights music is performed outside you can sit and l...

We stayed for one week half board, specifically chosen for the adults only aspect. Transfer time from the airport is about 25 mins. As we got onto one the big coaches, our luggage was put on a small transit van. We were dropped off second and found that the hotel is situated up a rather steep back road that explained why the luggage came on a smaller van. The hotel is modern, bright and spotlessly clean. All the staff spoke very good English and we checked in with no problems. Our room was on the 3rd floor and located on the back of the hotel with a mountain view. The back of the hotel has the sun in late afternoon and the front has it for most of the day. We were quite happy with the room. Decent size, huge bed, desk area, good sized bathroom and aircon unit that worked very well and could be adjusted to suit. Wardrobe space is ok. I did find it annoying that the free room safe, although useful, is located half way up the one side the wardrobe so made hanging clothes difficult. We found the balconies to be very small, with enough room for two chairs and no table. Rather uncomfortable to sit on as you couldn't stretch out and relax. Food on offer was ok. Not the massive choice of buffet we have been used to before, where the food seems to fill the room, But we both found something we liked most nights (myself being vegetarian) and didn't go hungry. The pool area is nice, if somewhat small, but has a lovely view across the sea. The pool area does have the sun on it all day, so we found it to be quite hot to sit there all day. there is a raised bar area that serves lunch each day. Food from here was good though there could be a long wait at times. Higher up still, there is a giant chess board and other assorted games to play. The roof top terrace is very nice with a stunning view over all of Funchal. I liked the honesty bar here as it saved having to go back down 7 floors for a drink or snack. It is walkable into Funchal from the hotel, we did a couple of times. Though would recommend a taxi back (about 5-8 euro) as its all uphill. There are local bars and shops about a 5-10 minute walk away. Again, all uphill coming back. I would recommend this hotel to people and enjoyed the week here.
