“Great hotel and very friendly staff”
Reviewed 11 July 2014

We stayed at the hotel from the 17th until 24th June and were made very welcome.
The hotel staff including the trainees were friendly and very professional.
Really good sea view room, well maintained and very clean.
Food was very good with a varied selection.
The location was good and transportation via taxi relatively cheap.
Mention Madeira, think Savoy Garden hotel we would definitely return there,
Thanks for a great holiday.

Room Tip: Pay the extra and get a sea view, you will not be disappointed.

Well this was our fourth visit to this Hotel and it was even better than before, so much so that next year we will be going back for longer. The Staff and Hotel manager Aida are fantastic, they all make us so welcome and it is just like going back home to family. We had a lovely room overlooking the ocean, ( which Aida had given us as an upgrade ) although we had originally booked a mountain view room which is smaller than the sea view room. This is an Adult only hotel so it is very quiet and you really notice this around the pool and at meal times, Heaven. The food is of a different theme every night and is ok but not great breakfast is the best, the entertainment is pretty dire now since the change from Gold to Couples but this did not bother us as we like to sit outside and there is a Jazz festival on for 3 of the nights that we go which is 3rd July to 5th in the Santa Catarina park in Funchal. The Hotel is set on a steep hill so if you have trouble walking it will be a problem, but you can take the bus from near the Hotel or just take a Taxi. The views from the roof terrace are fantastic looking right over Funchal and the mountains, there is also a Jacuzzi up there as well as an honesty bar. So once again i would like to thank Aida and her Staff for looking after us and we will see you next year.

Room Tip: A high floor is better for the views. And if you want to treat yourself there are Junior Suites and...

We returned on the 7th July from a week's stay at the Savoy Gardens. We had read reviews of the hotel before we left and so we were prepared for the hill - or so we thought! It was a slog back up but there is a local bus which which stops outside and we also found the taxis to be reasonable. The staff in the restaurant were very friendly and so laid back - no rushing about for them as we have experienced at other Thomson hotels. They did their jobs and seemed to be enjoying them. There was a variety of food for breakfast and we could always find something we liked for dinner although the beef skewers were rather too chewy. We enjoyed the Madeiran evening. We paid extra for a sea view and had a very clean, spacious and comfortable room on the second floor. We were extremely pleased to find that use of the safe was free as was the fridge which we used to store fresh milk. There are tea and coffee making facilities in the room so we took our own tea bags and coffee so we could make drinks whenever we wanted. Pool towels were provided and there were plenty of sun beds.
A week's stay wasn't long enough to see all that Madeira has to offer. We spent a day in Funchal, a day visiting the Tropical Gardens at Monte by way of the cable car and 2 1/2 days out on Thomson excursions. We paid for the value package which took us to the west of the island one day, the east another and 1/2 day to the Nun's Valley. The full day's excursions included 2 very average lunches. With hindsight we should have booked at one of the numerous local companies offering mini bus tours as they were much cheaper. However, we marvelled at the skill of our coach drivers who manoeuvred 55 seater coaches up narrow mountain roads with hair pin bends and sheer drops. We also enjoyed the "resort ramble" with Adele, Steven and Paula who took us along the promenade to the tea rooms and gardens. The poor waitress there was run off her feet when 74 of us turned up for tea and cakes!
As the coaches cannot reach the hotel you have to get off and walk up the road for a short way. Our luggage was delivered by van and then on the day we left it was collected and taken to the airport while we went by coach. All this is organised very efficiently.
All in all a brilliant holiday. We would love to return one day.

Room Tip: A high floor is good but wherever you are you don't seem to be able to escape the barking dogs.

Just returned today 7/7/14 from a week staying at the Savoy Gardens. We had read reviews of this hotel before we went and I would say they were all pretty accurate,Checking into our room was hassle free. Our room had a sea view which we paid extra for, which was worth it.A bonus in the room was the safety deposit box and fridge which was there at no extra cost to us.Restuarant was buffet style which might not be to everyones liking, but food was plentiful and all staff were friendly and welcoming.Lovely pool area with plenty beds and also lovely rooftop area.Entertainment each evening supplied by Thompson reps, which given the location of the hotel comes in useful if your not able to walk to and from centre. If i could suggest any improvement in the hotel I would suggest maybe a courtesy coach to and from centre which maybe a welcoming feature for the less able guests. All in all a thouroughly enjoyable stay even although the weather wasnt the greatest, but then we cant have everything.

Room Tip: If possible try and get a room with a sea view and balcony. We paid a bit extra but was worth it for...

We have been to this hotel twice and cannot fault it apart from the steep climb, being a couples only attracted us as we did not want the noise of children, the Thomson reps are brilliant and couldn't do enough, we went in March and due to abnormal stormy weather some excursions were cancelled, she did her upmost to get us onto a trip, we wanted to go to the caves as had not done it before but there was not enough people so we booked tea at Reeds palace, a must do by the way, great value and eat as much as you like, we ate on the balcony overlooking the bay, it was amazing, the trip to the caves then was back on as 2 more couples wanted to go but it was the day we had booked Reeds, the rep phoned Reeds and rebooked it for us, the trips are great, the cable car up to Monte and then do the toboggan ride or go to the botanical gardens and get a taxi or the cable car back down to the town.
The rooms are clean and spacious, we had the junior suite, more roomy and had a separate area where you could sit and look over the mountains, it had a balcony overlooking the front of hotel with a sea view.
The food is good a different choice each night, even fussy me could find something to fill up with, you are asked to use hand gel before entering restaurant to ensure cleanliness, the choice of buffet style is great as you can choose how much or little you have, there is a good lunch menu if you can manage it and a lovely bar to enjoy a drink before dinner.
The hotel is at the top of a steep hill, good exercise!!! there is a bus stop right outside and taxis wait in the entrance if you want one, the walk down is fine, its coming back up, we were over taken by a couple in their 80's from the hotel one day so stopped moaning and got on with it after that.
We will go back as Madeira is as busy or relaxing as you want it to be, the weather is consistently good and this hotel goes out of the way to make your stay special.

Room Tip: Choose a junior suite if you want a sea and mountain view

As stated in previous reviews the hotel is reached on foot by two steep inclines and once reached you are left waiting for your room until 1.30pm and then need to find your case and join the queue for the lift to your room, no welcoming tipple like other couples hotels I have stayed in. nice large sea view room, good sized bathroom shame fridge, hair dryer and safe had to be replaced oh, add leaky kettle to that ! restaurant presentable and staff very pleasant , food not up to standard again of other couples hotels in Tenerife and Majorca but always found something tasty to mange so can't really complain . The situation of the hotel to me is it's main drawback, yes you can catch a bus or taxi but I like to walk out in the evening without feeling like a mountain goat ! Taking everything into consideration it is a nice clean hotel, needs refurbishing in parts but not one I shall be returning to. Ps. Wifi connection in room very good

Room Tip: Sea view room, high floor, good wifi connection in room 402
