“Friendly staff”
Reviewed 26 August 2014

I have just come back from a 2 week trip with Thomson to this hotel and overall the hotel is good. I will list the positives first. Staff are very friendly and helpfull. I booked a suite with a sea view there are only two of these on the 7th floor but worth every penny. Massive bedroom and adjoining lounge area with a massive patio area with loungers, people can look onto you from the roof terrace but its no big deal. Free safe with every room. Hotel is very clean and rooms are cleaned every day with bedding done 3 times a week. The holiday reps are very helpfull and have lots of info with plenty of trips to keep you occupied. If you dont like whats on the food menu that evening have a word with the head waiter and he will sort you something different out a very helpfull and friendly bloke.
Now the bad points. If you have a normal room on the 7th floor your balcony is pathetic at best it can only be described as a strip you can stand on, dont think about trying to fit a chair on it. There are 7 suites only 3 of them have a good view of the surrounding area. The other 4 are on floor 1 at the back of the hotel and surrounded by glass partitions. The food is ok but sometimes doesn't taste like what you would expect, the yorkshire puddings were choux pastry!. If you are staying a week then it wont bother you but if you do 2 weeks i would recommend dining out a few nights. Drinks are over priced as with any hotel but 2-50 for a can of cola is a joke. You will have to order a drink with your dinner as well as you cant take them from the bar into the restraunt.

Room Tip: If you want a suite get the one with a sea view.

My partner and I spent a week at this hotel. The large, outdoor swimming pool and its surrounds were spotlessly clean. We used it every day. Our upgraded room with sea view was large and comfortable. We could even see the sea! The staff were friendly and helpful. There was wide selection of differing dishes for breakfast and dinner. We found breakfast to be excellent, with hot and cold options and fresh fruit. Dinner was not quite up to the same standard. Plenty of choice but sometimes only of average quality. We thought the price of wine, with dinner, was fairly expensive. The hotel has a rooftop terrace with amazing views over Funchal, especially at night.

Room Tip: Sea view rooms at the front are best. The rear mountain views are dominated by views of nearby prope...

We're just back from a one week break at this Thomson couples hotel. We'd never been to Madeira before, and when we booked it up, all I was expecting was a relaxing week in the sun.

Well, it certainly turned out to be a lot better than my expectations! The rooms are modern stylish & spacious with all facilities free of extra charge including a refrigerator and wi-fi connection. We could easily pick up the wi-fi signal in our 6th floor room. All rooms are cleaned daily and given a new set of clean fluffy towels each time.

The swimming pool and sunbathing areas including roof top sun terrace (with an honesty bar and jacuzzi) are all superb. This hotel also has three separate bars, a tv/internet lounge, and a spa & hairdressing salon. We stayed half board, and in the restaurant the range of food on offer, its presentation, the limitless portions available, and the waiting staff's attention to detail were fantastic.

Lastly, but by no means least, the entertainment team of Lisa, Adele, Dom and Stephen, were the people that really make this place worth visiting. Lisa & Dom as the duo Domino were very professional in performing a wide range of popular music. Adele's operatic voice is angelic, relaxing and incredible to listen to; and Stephen's guitar & harmonica performances were very captivating too. But more than this, Adele & Stephen also offer informative rambling walks of the local area, run quizzes & organise pool games each afternoon; which during our week served really well, to bring couples together and thereby increase everyone's enjoyment of a stay at the Savoy Gardens Hotel.

I loved and would highly recommend this hotel; one of the BEST I've ever stayed at! Will definitely return here one day soon........

Room Tip: Rooms with a sea view get the sun on their balcony all day. Rooms on the 7th floor only have Juliett...

Spent a week on a Thomson Couples holiday at this hotel. It is very clean and the rooms are ample size. The bed was comfortable and large. Bath with shower over. Have to say the softest towels I've had in any hotel. Personally felt the wash basin was more of a design feature than a practical thing, but then maybe that's just me
The pool came as a pleasant surprise to me - our last 5 Thomson holidays have had pools so cold I thought I was in the Arctic circle, but this one was warm - luxury!
Compliments to the bar staff, they were good natured, comical and efficient in equal measures. I'm a bit undecided about the food. It wasn't the best dinner buffet I have had on a Thomson holiday, but there was plenty and I think one has to remember this is an island and therefore there are probably limitations on the availability of some things. I am a fish fan and felt well catered for. However, my three travelling companions did feel a bit let down on the Friday when fish appeared in the majority of dishes including the salads.
Overall I recommend the hotel, it has everything you need for a relaxing holiday and of course Madeira is a delight.

Room Tip: A high floor sea view is good but suspect the non sea views are not that bad either

We returned home on the 11th August from this "Beautiful Hotel". We were on the 6th floor of this Couples Hotel and had a lovely spacious room. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. The standard of cleanliness was exceptional in all areas. Plenty of sunbeds and umbrellas around the pool area. Great choice of food at breakfast and evening meal and all of very high quality. Our Thomson rep Paula was very knowledgeable about everything you needed to know about the island. The entertainment team were good fun and the Duo Domino had great voices. All together a fantastic holiday which we would recommend.

A lovely quiet, relaxed hotel. The staff were the stand out feature of the hotel, the most friendly, helpful people I have ever met. The food was great. Very quiet, clean and safe area but still close to the town centre. Our room was fantastic! we had the junior suite, which had a large private terrace with sun loungers, table and chairs and the most amazing view! As it was our honeymoon we had a free bottle of champagne waiting for us in the room. There was also a complimentary bowl of fruit and madeira wine. We had excellent massages in the spa which were very reasonably priced. We loved everything about it!

We stayed here for 2 weeks in late July and we have nothing negative to say about the hotel. We a had room on 3rd floor overlooking the front of the hotel and it was excellent. Room was very spacious with seating and a very large comfortable bed. It was great having the fridge in the room too and we even used the kettle. The staff are way beyond excellent, friendly, helpful and polite, at all areas. The food is fantastic especially the desserts. As this was a couples hotel with no children it was lovely and quiet and we would highly recommend this hotel.
Funchal itself is lovely but as everyone has said there are hills to go up and down! We walked into the town and it takes 30 minutes to the beginning of the town and another 15 minutes to get to the old town where the cable car is. Another lovely walk is along the promenade/lido area. Recommend Mona Lisa cafe for a chilled glass of wine. There is a lot of work being done at the harbour area and it looks like it will be lovely when finished, it does not stop you wandering around this area though. We travelled with Thomsons flying from Scotland but it appears they will no longer be flying to this area from Scotland in the future which is a great pity as we would have definately returned. Thanks to all in the hotel for making a very enjoyable holiday.

Room Tip: Sea view room.. the higher the floor the better the view
