“excellent hotel, fantastic food”
Reviewed 16 February 2011

We have just arrived home from this fantastic hotel. The staff are very friendly ,The food was fantastic with plenty of choice and a different theme each night. The breakfast was very good too.The hotel is very clean and quiet,
Paula and jan the thompson reps were great they were friendly and always willing to help.we went on a few trips which we enjoyed and found them very good value for money.
My only criticism was the location which we found a little out of funchal, but having said that the walk into funchal is down hill and a taxi ride back was about 5 euros or there is a local bus stop outside the hotel.
we didnt go out at night as the hotel entertainment was great.
we will definately be going back.

My wife and I have just returned from a 7 day break at the Savoy Gardens Hotel which we very much enjoyed. The Hotel, a Thomson Gold Hotel, was excellent and worthy of it's 4 star rating however the location is not 4 star as it is situated up quite a hill which is no problem when going down, to either Funchal town centre or the Lido, but the walk back is quite a strain and you would be well advised to get a taxi (one of the few things that are cheap in Madiera). Enterntainment team at the Hotel are excellent however all drinks are expensive.

We have just returned from a week at the Savoy Gardens where we had a sea view room, which was beautifully clean and well maintained throughout our stay. The hotel is in a good position, just 15 minutes walk to Funchal and about 10 from the Lido, but it is at the top of a steep hill which may be a problem for some. There is however a bus stop just outside the hotel for those who need it.

Both breakfast and dinner are buffet style, with a wide selection of foods which were generally pretty bland and at best tepid in temperature. At breakfast there was an omelette station where chef cooked to order, and they were excellent. Although the dinner theme changed every night, it did leave a bit to be desired and we just wished that we were on bed and breakfast rather than half board.

The grounds of the hotel are very lush and well cared for with a lovely pool area where the entertainment staff do quizzes and the like during the day if that is your thing. The evening entertainment in the club was not to our taste, but others seemed to enjoy it – there was dancing and cabaret with games requiring guest participation – a bit hi de hi really, but each to there own.

All in all we had a good holiday on a lovely island although we will probably look for alternative accommodation on our next trip.

Me and my wife went there to spent 10 aniversary by just two of us and left the kinds to grandparents. We chose the hotel because it was rated no under 18, our aim was just to relax and spend time on the island driving around. Hotel met our expectations very good. Room was very clean and quiet. Savoy Gardens location is excelent, although near is a road but there is not very much traffic except daytime. Room with a seaview costs littlebit extra but it is worth it. Breakfast is oustanding.

Hotel has a clean poll which could have been little bir warmer but of course we were there on january and weather wasn´t so warm anyhow. There is also a jacuzzi on the roof where we spent lot of time. Great scenary from the Jacuzzi, nice to have refreshing beer and enjoy senary :)

Employees took care of us very well. We got answers to every question we had we were treated like royalties, nice change for a while :)

Other customers were aged 50-70 so we were youngest ones (35). Hotel´s nighclub(lounge) was pretty boring but it was understandably when thinking of customers age, luckly near the hotel was good restaurants (I.e Terrace).

Hotels restaurant servers only buffet as a dinner at the price 29 euros. Althought every night there is a new theme we thought it was too expencive. There was no other choices so we eat other restaurants allmost every night.

Perfect hotel for couples looking for peace.

This is our second stay at the Savoy Gardens over christmas and new year. We didn't think it could be better than last year but it was!
We requested a particular room on booking with Thomsons and when we checked in we were pleased to discover we were given it.
The rooms are as clean as ever with the maids working hard to replace towels and toiletries every day. The complimentary safe and fridge are a bonus and the free pool towels save on weight in the suitcase. If you don't want to pay the petty charge for supplies of tea and coffee just take your own and supply your own milk, the kettle is free to use.
The restaurant and food was of exceptional quality. The waiters were very polite and efficient at clearing the tables. We particularly enjoyed the salad bar and there is a varied selection of hot and cold food. Champagne was available at breakfast but we're not sure if this was only available over the festive period.
The gala evenings were held on Christmas Day and New Years Eve. This meant waiter service and free wine. It may have been better if the wine was left on the table but the waiters were quite keen on topping up our glasses so it didn't really matter.
The bar service was also very good. All the barmen were friendly and always had time for a chat and were always busy.
Onto the Thomson Gold entertainment team of John, Emma, Jenny and the late replacement Johnny Green. They were very professional and the 2 girls in particular had great voices and achieved some good harmonies. We also enjoyed their panto and themed shows. The early evening entertainment involved some sort of quiz or "Who wants to be a millionaire" type contest with a range of silly prizes including beach bags and T shirts etc. We tried hard but were disappointed not to have won a 2010 diary or a pen & pencil set signed by the team!!
The resident duo, Kudos, were a vast improvement on last year. The singer, Elspeth, had a great voice and their vast range of songs always had the dance floor full. The male part of the act (Noland we believe) also made a great ugly sister in the Cinderalla panto!!
Not forgetting Ant who worked hard in the lighting and sound effects booth and the late evening disco every night plus the one on New Years Eve into the early hours.(Don't know how but we always seemed to be the last ones in the bar every night!)
The same team ran the daytime activities with a lot of energy and enthusiasm.
Another daytime activity is the guided walks and wine tasting by the local specialist Anita. The walks are very imformative and taken at a sensible pace.
The only down side of the entire holiday was the 2 Thomson reps. We had a minor complaint at the start of the holiday which we decided not to pursue, however they were both very hostile toward us and had little sympathy for our issue. A little bit of customer relations wouldn't go amiss.
However this won't put us off of using Thomson Gold or Couples service again and we look forward to returning to the Savoy Gardens again next year.

This was the first time we'd been away for the festive season - an ideal 10 day escape from the snow & cooking. After reading other reviews, we were prepared for the walk uphill & distance from the centre of Funchal. It was also useful to know about 'Strawberry World', who provide good & much cheaper excursions, & are located half a mile away at the Lido. There are also other companies offering excursions, didn't try them. Just avoid any companies offering cheap excursions with 'Time Share' presentations!
Despite the snow, we did get out of Gatwick abt 6.50am on Dec 24th & were in the sunshine of our Funchal hotel soon after midday. The rooms were fine, with free fridge & safe. We would agree with most other comments that the food plentiful, lots of choice but rather bland. It seemed to be geared to the Brits away from home. We would have preferred more Portugese dishes, with more flavour. We had to eat out to get the local speciality of scabbard fish with banana. We thought the New Year's Eve Gala Dinner was excellent & served to us with plenty of 'free' wine. However some guests complained that there was no choice! We all watched the midnight Firework Display from the hotel roof.
The evening entertainment in the hotel was mixed, the team worked hard but the game shows weren't really to our taste.
We did the North & West tour & South & East tour - 40 Euros per person if you booked both with Strawberry World'. For bus travel, you can purchase a 'Giro' card at hotel reception (similar to an 'Oyster card) then all localish journeys cost 1 Euro, instead of E1.80 . You can then top it up at Joe's at the Lido, or in Funchal Anidea shopping centre, as required. The No. 81 bus takes you to Nun's Valley for E2.80 -pay on the bus, you can't use your Giro card.
With temperatures of 19-23 degrees it was ideal for walking; we'd not anticipated swimming! If you're also planning to walk the levadas, buy a walk book & Map with Bus routes in the UK before you go, as there much more expensive out there. We did several walks from our 'Walk Madeira' book. You do need to take care as there's been several landslides with the heavy rain in Feb 2010. Climbing steeply abt 100yds behind the hotel, there's a levada going east to Funchal & west to Madeira Shopping centre.

We stayed at the Savoy Gardens on a Thomson Gold half board package for a week leading up to Christmas. I will tell it how we found it - we would have had no issues if this had been listed as 3* but having expected 4*, overall it was a disappointing stay.
The hotel was clean and well presented, staff friendly and the Thomson team excellent. Hotel grounds were well kept and the gardens very attractive and well maintained. Location was at the top of a very steep hill - no problem for us but we may have found it a challenge if we were 10 years older .... as this is not a significant point on the publicity, you may want to qualify this before booking.
Room was clean and bed (inc. pillows) comfortable, maid service excellent. The hotel was quieter than average at night so we slept well. Our room was small - boutique size - although I must qualify this as being a standard room as booked ... we did expect something a bit larger (although bathroom as good size) e.g. we could not move around when packing/unpacking cases as they took up the only available floor space. Balcony was really only there to house two chairs that would not fit in the room. We had booked a mountain view and that is what we got.
I have never stayed in a 3* hotel that did not provide basic tea and coffee facilities f.o.c - the Savoy Gardens only offered this as a chargeable addition.
The food feel well short of expectations. There was always choice but the hot buffet in the evenings not well presented. The taste of everything cooked was bland (not just my comments). Desserts were OK.
In summary - not bad, but not great.
