“Good value for money”
Reviewed 12 February 2012

This a a good basic hotel, clean and cheap and very central. The reception staff speak good English. The hotel breakfast is limited and the coffee is poor, but as the room was so cheap we went out for a better breakfast at the budget cafe two doors down. The hotel don't take credit or debit cards, but there is a cash machine in the supermarket next door. The staff can only provide a limited amount of tourist information. You can use the hotel internet for 1 euro, but it doesn't let you download bus timetables.

The hotel was clean, room not too small. The beds are being renewed, our was ok but a bit hard for my husband.
About the breakfast I had read it was poor. So it was. I had a word with someone responsible and after that the coffee was much better. But not the bread so far, yet in the shop next door you can have good bread. And fresh orange juice for a small amount!
We have been many times to Madeira and this time we wanted to be in the center and it was fine. Week before X-mas is just fun! Everybody is out, the town is beautifully decorated with thousands of lamps and flowers and music. For us Scandinavians it is almost too much...

This was our second holiday in Madeira. We had stayed in the hotel district and this time we wanted to stay right in the centre of Funchal. This certainly was central. The hotel is basic and clean and the staff were friendly. We were half board and ate breakfast in this hotel. Again it was basic simple food. Evening meal in their sister hotel a few paces away. The waiting staff and the chef were welcoming. It was a limited menu. I am a vegetarian and they tried to accommodate my needs with cheese salad most evenings, There is a large supermarket next door to the Centro where you can buy a wide range of food and drink. Despite this, the area was reasonably quiet for a city centre hotel. I can't remember exactly what we paid, but it was very good value for money.

Room Tip: We had a room at the front which was fine.

The best part of this tiny old hotel is, that it truly is in the centre. 5 minutes walk to the harbour, shopping galleries, central bus station, restaurants. If you would like to spend your time in the hotel room this is not you choice - although if you manage to get the room from the top floor with the balcony (they have two such rooms) its very nice to sip your single malt wit good cigar on the balcony and look at the harbour.
It's good base for exploration to levadas or to Funcal itself. The beds are good and hotel is quiet.
The breakfast is very modest - one cheese, one ham, boiled eggs - but it's fresh and it does not make you overeaten.

I have stayed in Do Centro many times and have always had a pleasant holiday. Hotel is very clean and staff helpful. It is a part of portugese mentality not to be so open and talkative than in some other cultures and they also might be shy about their language skills. When asked, the staff allways helped gladly and gave advice, but there were some new people who weren't as skillfull. FYI: I have discovered that madeirans in general don't always know their island best - get yourself a good map, from the tourist info for example... :)
Location is superb! It is very convenient to move around the island from here, everything is so close and even though the location is central, hotel doesn't suffer from too much noise. The doors to the corridors, however, are not adequately soundproof - for a light sleeper I'd recommend ear plugs, as I would to almost anywhere in the world, but I don't think this hotel was particularly noisy.
Personally, I don't understand reviews in which people long for tea/coffee making facilities etc. in the room, especially in Funchal where there is an ecellent coffee bar on each corner. With these room rates, you'll get an excellent value for your money even though the breakfast is continental and relatively modest. (2-3 different breds or rolls, 2-3 choises of juice, ham, cheese, coffee, tee, marmelade). In my opinion, if you want everything to be perfect, especially for an amazing honeymoon, you should select at least a 4 or 5-star hotel and, even then, the experience and atmosphere could be better some where else.
We have never suffered from any kind of pests, ants or bedbugs in Do Centro, that were mentioned earlier somewhere. Everything in the room was very clean and (drawers and cupboards, bathroom, balcany) also spacious enough, especially for the price they charge.
There is so much to see on this little island that people should not spend their holiday in a hotel room! If you fancy doing that anyway, I might not recommend this hotel - the western hotel area might be more suitable for that purpouse. To my taste Lido (and onwards) is too far from the centre, 2-5km, and there is a looong uphill on the way back if you walk. Also, Lido feels like the Canary islands, where you can spend your holiday with crowds of other tourists, which I don't fancy very much. But there are different tastes, of course.
If you are looking for a good base in which one can have a good nights sleep and, actively explore the destination, rather than the hotel room, this is an ideal choise!

For a rental car there is very little parking space in the center. The smaller roads are also very narrow and terrain can be very steep - driving is not impossible on the island at all, but perhaps not most suited for the unexperienced "Sunday drivers". It is also more ecological to use busses and organized tours. Anyway, the island tour is a necessity in Madeira, you should not miss it at any case!

Excellent places to visit in Funchal are e.g. Botanical garden, Quinta do Palheiro Ferreiro, Monte Palace Tropical gardens, Frederico de Freitas House Museum, Quinta das Cruzes Museum, Sacred Art Museum (if one is interested in the subject). Cruise on Santa Maria ( replica of Columbus' ship) is also wonderful! The best seafood restaurant is O'Jango in the old part of Funchal - try their wonderful seafood rice (arroz de marisco), it's really, really good!

I have recommended hotel Do Centro to my friends and they have been very satisfied with the location and cost/value relation. I will also definitely return here again.

  • Liked — Location, price/quality relation, cleanliness, there is a supermarket conviniently next door
  • Disliked — Occasional sounds from the corridor

......checking in you may experience not very helpful staff like how to get around, where to park a car or to take a bus? You have to find it out on your own. Don't hope too much if you don't speak Portuguese. Room itself for the value of money is ok (bed is quite soft and so do the pillow) but the main problem is the ants – they are absolutely everywhere, if you have a little food left on the desk or a drop of juice in the glass so be aware they are even in the bathroom. Just a little uncomfortable, well they don't crawl over you while sleeping… And the breakfast is just a joke -juice, instant coffee, bread, jam and cheese of course slices of ham as well. That's it! There are no tea or coffee facilities in the room neither the fridge. Itself Madeira is worth of exploring, the best way to do it is a hire a car and make sure you have super CDW insurance. ......checking in you may experince not very helpful staff like how to get around, where to park a car or to take a bus.
