Owner description: The Madeira Story Centre is a Museum situated in Funchal's Old Town centre where you can learn about Madeira's history in such a way, that you will feel that you are a part of it! The contents of the Museum are rigorous and detailed in order to give the the best information about the History and Culture of Madeira, from the island's volcanic origins to hydroplanes, its discovery and attacks by ferocious pirates, all described with the precision that you require. The Madeira Story Centre includes a large handcraft and souvenir shop with regional products, as well as a typical restaurant situated on the panoramic terrace with capacity for 200 people promoting Madeiran gastronomy. We enjoyed a visit to The Madeira Story Centre on a very quiet Sunday morning during our recent stay in Funchal. The centre as a whole is well presented and a good size.

The 3rd floor terrace offers great views of Funchal although it's a shame that food/drinks cannot be ordered from the cafe up there; instead there are drinks and snack machines.

Most of the museum is on the second floor where information is presented in Portuguese, English, French and German. There are various different types of exhibits including some interactive ones designed to appeal more to the children. We felt that it was just the right length - long enough to be informative without becoming tedious.

There is also a very good gift shop and café on the ground floor. You do not have to pay to go into the story centre in order to visit these facilities.

Although possibly a little expensive considering the size, we felt it was worth the visit and it certainly provided an accessible way of extending our knowledge of Madeira.

While on holiday in Madeira, we visited Funchal and decided to visit the Madeira Story Centre. We purchased a combined ticket to the centre and a return trip on the Monte Cable Car, this ticket was good value at 21.50 Euro pp.

The centre gives the history of the island from volcanic origins to the modern day, the centre is an ideal size, and gives enough information which is easy to take in without being too onerous. The centre also has a gift shop and café.

An enjoyable visit.

Visited the Madeira Story as we wanted to know a little more about the history of the island. I'm glad we visited as it was very informative and i had only a partial understanding of what Madeira had been through over the years. However, it was too expensive for what it was, and we had a voucher for 1 euro discount per person. The advertisements for the place mis-sold it slightly in that it wasn't quite as interactive as stated. I can't imagine children enjoying it much.

This tells the story of Madeira. It is a bit expensive at €11 but we felt it was worth it. It starts on the first floor telling about how the volcanic island originated. The third floor was the least interesting its a bit like a small car park with a few drab plants. Best of all is the main exhibition area on the second floor. This gives a detailed description of the history of the island and is very well presented with photographs, videos etc showing the development of the island. It lets you see how the island has changed in the last 50 years. We found it very interesting.

The displays at this museum run from lava rock formations to an autographed Ronaldo jersey. Lots of interactive displays that are fun for adults as well as for children. The entrance price is a little high, but if it is your first time to Madeira this museum is a must see!
