The O Tasco restaurant is a family run affair and one of the overall best restaurants that I have had the pleasure of visiting when on holiday. The reasons are many, we turned up late for lunch as they were packing up and trying to go home for a couple of hours before dinner service, however, they made us immediately feel welcome and put together a meal fit for a king out of the little they had left. It was not done for us because they were trying to make extra money, but simply because the Madeiran people are so very gracious and generous with their time and want you to enjoy their island. The food when it came was all fish, as we had requested, and arrived with the best garlic bread and a couple of delicious different salads. We ate everything washed down with a glass of the local beer, which I highly recommend and when it turned a little colder with a breeze, the owner immediately brought out a shawl for my wife to use as she was a little chilly. The best place for lunch on the island, we have now been there twice and will be going again if we can before we leave.
The last thing to add is we ate like kings for the price of a pauper, great value for money!

Ignore the adverse comments. This is a small family-run place, laid back and easy-going. All prices are clearly displayed and are extremely reasonable, and it's so comfortable and friendly that it's easy to relax and slowly work your way through whatever takes your fancy from the many dishes of the day. It hits just the right note for those chilling out on holiday. Not to easy to find, but just persevere up the Bela de Sao Tiago hill - it's only 10 minutes up the hill, and well worth it. Sample of the friendliness (they only take cash, by the way) - "Oh, you think you may not have enough cash on you? Never mind, come in and eat now, and come back tomorrow to pay".

We had two lunches with friends and wife. Definite best thing ever in the city. Must try tapas and tuna skewers. Beef skewers are very good too.

Went for coffee Sunday lunch, met by nice helpful man. Told us they were on trip adviser so decided to book for last day of holiday as special meal. Silly us. We always get one poor time on holiday. Arrived early and met by thick different patron with four other staff behind him who ignored us. Wine and prices on display, good. Ordered wine ,yummy, but then found there were no menus, no prices, no idea ,no service. You were supposed to go to bar and fawn over tray of beet root, tray green broad beans and four trays of assorted stuff. Offered fresh tuna in Tupperware dish on back sink drainer. Had three starters quite tastey but then we were ignored so we paid, till still broken from Sunday and skipped back to hotel. Thank goodness we did not spend what we were willing to spend. Can suggest better places in town.

The family who run the small but clean restaurant were friendly and helpfull, and unique in that, you tried a small portion and chose your meal from the counter display, but this meant selection was smaller than usual.
