Dorisol Buganvilia
Ranked #66 of 87 Hotels in Funchal
Reviewed 11 June 2014

The Buganvilia hotel is situated on Rua da Casa Branca, West of Funchal. We recently spent a week there on a bed and breakfast basis. The hotel is one of three adjacent hotels, all Dorisol owned and we had the facilities of the other two to use; 3 pools (1 indoor), 2 restaurants, 2 bars, Jacuzzi, gym, tennis court games room and much more (there are also therapy treatments at an extra cost). Don’t worry about getting around, the three hotels virtually merge into one complex with several access points to all facilities. We asked (by e-mail) for a high floor, west facing, pool view and were duly given just that by reception - great start!

Food - breakfasts were plentiful, fruits, cereals, salads, cold meat and cheese, toast and spreads, hot food such as bacon, eggs, (scrambled and boiled), beans, chorizo sausage, different breads and endless tea and coffee. The breakfast menu does vary a bit and does very well to cater for all nationalities.

Rooms - clean, bright, full facilities, double hob, microwave, fridge, sink, utensils, TV, separate table and chairs. Plenty of storage and clean, modern bathrooms with hair drier and shaver point. Balcony (with another table and two chairs) a bit small but more than enough room for us two.

Public areas - clean, pleasant environment, plenty of sitting areas, 2 lifts to all floors plus stairs.

Pool areas - tidy, washed down and cleaned every day, plenty of loungers with cushions, indoor pool equally as nice, Jacuzzi is lively!

Bars - “Terrace” and “Piano” (both in the middle hotel, the Dorisol Estrelicia). Terrace bar, in particular, was the perfect way to start the evening or end the day. Piano bar usually had evening entertainment.

Other services - Free courtesy bus (picks up directly outside the hotel steps) to Funchal harbour area on the hour from the hotel, back on the ½ hour (except at 13:00/13:30 when the driver has his dinner!). Literature suggested this service does not run on Sunday but it was running the Sunday we were there, possibly combining the service with another hotel at off peak times. (This is a really good service if you don’t fancy the somewhat steeply graded walk to and from Funchal).

Rooms - Tidied every day, towels changed 4 times per week, wake up calls, the usual stuff. Discrete recycling bins (glass, paper, plastic) on each floor.

Staff - Very pleasant. helpful and courteous. To the usual embarrassment of us Brits, they all spoke very good English.

General location - perfect for restaurants, supermarkets, bars and close to the Estrata Monumental (the main road to Funchal) but far enough away so as not to get traffic noise. Two blocks down (over the Estrata Monumental - about 300 yds) and you are in the lido area.

Summary - this is not five star but you are not paying anywhere near that sort of price. No doubt some whinging Brit could find fault somewhere and the kitchen area was probably due for a new fridge (nothing wrong with the existing fridge - it kept the wine chilled, it was just a bit old) but what I got for the price I paid was considerably greater (a lot greater) than I was expecting. Thank you to the Buganvilia and all the staff for making my Madeira a great holiday.

Room Tip: West facing rooms are over the pool/sea but don't always get evening sunshine due to nearby moun...

Having read reviews before we went, we were unsure what to expect. We were pleasantly surprised, the hotel could do with a bit of a refurb but as everyone else has said, the staff are very friendly and the hotel is spotless. The room was more than adequate and we had a balcony that had a sea view and overlooked the pool area. Breakfast was fine, plenty to choose from and no need for anyone to go hungry, the staff were replenishing food as soon as it went down. There was washing up liquid, a wash up brush and tea towel in every room which is helpful. The courtesy bus was welcome on several occasions and was always on time. We walked to Funchal several times and caught the bus back.

Agree with Hilary Jones that the hotel was conveniently placed for all local bars and restaurants and the cleanliness and friendliness of the staff. However, didn't rate the breakfast as the sausages and bacon looked awful. Stayed on the 7th floor and the views were excellent. I would say good value for the money we paid.

Room Tip: Ask for a room above the 5th floor.

We stayed at the Buganvilia as a group of 36 people. The hotel is in a perfect location with plenty of choice of restaurants in the surrounding area. The breakfast had plenty of choice in a pleasant dining room. The staff were friendly and helpful and the hotel was very clean. There is a kitchenette in each room which we found useful, mainly for the fridge.
It could be difficult for people with limited mobility as there are steps for access to the lifts.
The indoor pool, sauna etc were superb and we preferred the upper outdoor pool - cold, but very refreshing.
We attempted one of the evenings entertainment, not to be repeated - ever!! and the upstairs bar area was too hot and lacked ambience. This was not a problem to us though as there are so many other places to go.
The evening meal was €15, buffet style and seemed to be popular with the guests although we stopped on a bed and breakfast basis. We ate a different restaurant each evening, mainly choosing from the reasonably priced tourist menus.
There was no noise at night and the beds were comfortable so no complaints there.
We would certainly recommend this hotel and would stay there again without any doubt.

The hotel have medium quality rooms (little bit old, the pictures on the homepage might cheat a bit), but anyway it is all right.
It had everything i needed, a good bathroom and a balcony with a view to the sea.
The location it is good, near you can find different restaurants and bars in all different kind of quality.
Additionally the staff is very kind and helpful.
PS- The breakfast it is very good!

Room Tip: Rooms on the upper floors are quieter.

We booked a sea view room, but was put in room 3 ground floor, next to car park and near Reception. No view and noisy, apparently only room available at the time. Following several visits to Reception we were moved to 7th floor on the next day. Very good room, no complaints. Speaking to two other couples in the hotel, who had booked through online booking company, they had had a similar experience. A ground floor room until they complained. So be aware that there may be problems at peak times. Breakfast is adequate, continental with two hot dishes, one of which is eggs in various forms. Good location with hotel bus to Funchal. This finishes at 6:30, however good local bus service. Trips are 1.9 euros unless you purchase a Giro card, this is available from the wine shop near the Hoppa bus stop. Kitchenette has microwave, fridge, hob and equipment. Only soap is provided in bathroom which was spotless, however towels only changed every other day.

Room Tip: Be persistent if allocated a ground floor room
