The Buganvilia hotel is situated on Rua da Casa Branca, West of Funchal. We recently spent a week there on a bed and breakfast basis. The hotel is one of three adjacent hotels, all Dorisol owned and we had the facilities of the other two to use; 3 pools (1 indoor), 2 restaurants, 2 bars, Jacuzzi, gym, tennis court games room and much more (there are also therapy treatments at an extra cost). Don’t worry about getting around, the three hotels virtually merge into one complex with several access points to all facilities. We asked (by e-mail) for a high floor, west facing, pool view and were duly given just that by reception - great start!
Food - breakfasts were plentiful, fruits, cereals, salads, cold meat and cheese, toast and spreads, hot food such as bacon, eggs, (scrambled and boiled), beans, chorizo sausage, different breads and endless tea and coffee. The breakfast menu does vary a bit and does very well to cater for all nationalities.
Rooms - clean, bright, full facilities, double hob, microwave, fridge, sink, utensils, TV, separate table and chairs. Plenty of storage and clean, modern bathrooms with hair drier and shaver point. Balcony (with another table and two chairs) a bit small but more than enough room for us two.
Public areas - clean, pleasant environment, plenty of sitting areas, 2 lifts to all floors plus stairs.
Pool areas - tidy, washed down and cleaned every day, plenty of loungers with cushions, indoor pool equally as nice, Jacuzzi is lively!
Bars - “Terrace” and “Piano” (both in the middle hotel, the Dorisol Estrelicia). Terrace bar, in particular, was the perfect way to start the evening or end the day. Piano bar usually had evening entertainment.
Other services - Free courtesy bus (picks up directly outside the hotel steps) to Funchal harbour area on the hour from the hotel, back on the ½ hour (except at 13:00/13:30 when the driver has his dinner!). Literature suggested this service does not run on Sunday but it was running the Sunday we were there, possibly combining the service with another hotel at off peak times. (This is a really good service if you don’t fancy the somewhat steeply graded walk to and from Funchal).
Rooms - Tidied every day, towels changed 4 times per week, wake up calls, the usual stuff. Discrete recycling bins (glass, paper, plastic) on each floor.
Staff - Very pleasant. helpful and courteous. To the usual embarrassment of us Brits, they all spoke very good English.
General location - perfect for restaurants, supermarkets, bars and close to the Estrata Monumental (the main road to Funchal) but far enough away so as not to get traffic noise. Two blocks down (over the Estrata Monumental - about 300 yds) and you are in the lido area.
Summary - this is not five star but you are not paying anywhere near that sort of price. No doubt some whinging Brit could find fault somewhere and the kitchen area was probably due for a new fridge (nothing wrong with the existing fridge - it kept the wine chilled, it was just a bit old) but what I got for the price I paid was considerably greater (a lot greater) than I was expecting. Thank you to the Buganvilia and all the staff for making my Madeira a great holiday.
