This is a lovely family home, in a quiet part of Funchal, but on the bus route and only 10 mins from the centre by car. Secluded, quite a large garden, overlooking the bay, with a verandah outside on which sumptuous breakfasts were served in the pleasant March sunshine. Rita & Filipe are assiduous in their effort to make everyone feel at home, Maria (the resident maid) knows the place inside out and Vitelina is extremely efficient in both tidying rooms and serving breakfast - I can't work how she does both at the same time, but she does.
We certainly intend to re-visit

We stayed a week in March 2013, our first visit to Madeira, and QSG was a great choice. It's a comfortable and modestly elegant family country house, the family home of Rita, the owner (the bedroom we stayed in at first was her bedroom as a child). We then moved to the "mini-suite", a larger room with a larger bathroom and wonderful balcony. Rita, her husband Filipe, and the maid, Vitalina, keep it running at a very high standard -- brilliant breakfasts with fresh squeezed OJ and warm rolls and croissants, home-made jams, in the sun on the terrace when weather permits, flowers everywhere, nothing is too much trouble. We took the bus to and from town, really easy once you get the hang of it (and keep the timetable to hand), and the occasional taxi, and used our rental car to explore the rest of the island.
We thought Madeira has over-developed, with new hotels crammed together west of Funchal, and cruise ship coach parties at the beauty spots. But the flowers, and scenery, and walking are all fantastic and it's perfectly possible to get away from the crowds -- at least, in March! If you want a taste of old Madeira (in addition to QSG), don't miss the João Manuel de Sousa e Silva showroom, on the first floor of a building next to the market -- even if you can't afford £1000 for an embroidered tablecloth, there are plenty of lower-priced items, and the old couple who run it, in their 80s, won't be there for ever. The embroidery is done by 5000 outworkers across the island. A totally different experience from all the tourist shops around Funchal.

The Quinta Sao Goncalo has to rate as one of the loveliest b&b establishments we've ever stayed in. It's a classy old estate with a lovely and quiet front garden, a mere 25-minute walk from the centre of town. There are only about 5 rooms, so it tends to sell out quickly. The rooms themselves are quite large and most feature lovely views over Funchal. (Especially the largest room, with its own terrace.). One thing that really impressed us was the amount of built in closet and storage space, and the beds were very comfortable.

The breakfasts were ample and the service was attentive and pleasant. Wireless internet didn't quite reach our room, but was good in the middle of the building, where they even provide a laptop for guest use.

There's a good restaurant (Zarcos) just up the street from the Quinta if you don't feel like going into town, but it's a steep uphill climb on foot.

Finding the hotel was a bit of a challenge the first time; I'm glad we weren't trying to find it at night. It's hidden behind a high wall with an electric gate. There's a small brass sign on the gate that you'd never see in the dark.

We stayed 8 nights in Quinta Sao Gonsalo in February 2012. The quinta is very beautiful with a big tropical garden.
The location was very good for us. Its is on a hill above the sea with fantastic views of Funchal, also very quite, but still a walking distance to the city center (20 min downhill and back 5 Min by bus).
The rooms look nice and are also clean. Only the beds were not as comfortable as we are used to (we have changed 3 rooms and in all rooms the beds were equally uncomfortable).
The breakfast was delicious, with fresh croissants and wonderful self-cooked exotic jam, at least 5 different sorts every morning!
The service was also very good. Rita and Filippe are very helpful and sweet. The woman who cooks and cleans is also extreme freidly.
All in all, a great place to stay in Funchal.

On the opposite side of the city from the 'hotel zone' and in a residential area. Wonderful view of the harbour from our sea-view room or from the large private garden. No real need for a hire car as a bus stop is very close (easy to use with a 'Giro card' you buy on the bus and then recharge in city centre facilities). But also an easy 20 minute walk down to the city centre. We would advise you to arrange the airport pick-up. Mr Alfonseca, the driver, lives nearby and speaks very good English! We arranged a day-trip to the north with him, which was informative and gave us some insight into local life. The B&B owner, Dr Rita Vasconcelos and her husband Filipe insist on high standards and the quality of the service prvided by the staff is excellent. We had an evening meal, cooked by Maria the on-site maid. It was good and plentiful and we felt quite special sitting at the dining table surrounded by silverware, with oil paintings on the walls.

Room Tip: Choose a sea view.

Quinta Sao Goncalo is a beautiful mansion in a quiet residencial area in Sao Goncalo, about 20-30 minutes walk from Funchal, or a very exciting 10 min. bus ride (bus stop right in front of the hotel). Every morning, breakfast ist served on the terrace with a view on Funchal and the cruise ships at the harbour. It was so nice to sit outside at night with a glass of Douro wine and watch the stars and the lights of Funchal (mosquito repellant provided courtesy of Quinta Sao Goncalo ;-)). Rita, the owner, her husband and her staff make sure that the guests feel welcome and provide all necessary info about the island.

We have stayed in several places in Funchal, and Quinta Sao Goncalo is by far the very best.
Both from our room and from the garden there were breathtaking vistas over the Atlantic, the lower mountains and the town and port of Funchal itself. The room was well furnished and had lots of space.
Breakfast was served in the garden or in a cosy dining room according to weather or to our wish (we could stand lower temperatures than the maid could). If you order in advance, you can also have dinner in the Quinta, but here you need to order with one of the hosts who are not always present (unless you speak Portuguese). Because the ambience is so wonderful we tried it one evening. The food was OK but no great experience in itself.
Unless you are a very keen hiker we'd only recommend Sao Goncalo if you have a hired car. The access road is extremely steep, and even the shortcut into Funchal centre is fairly long, very narrow and pretty dark at night. With a car you are OK, and there is lots a parking space inside the electronic gate which you can open yourself.

Room Tip: We recommend rooms with sea view. But our friends who did not order it, had partial sea view over Fu...
