“Like staying in an old romantic movie”
Reviewed 21 November 2013 via mobile

If you're travelling to Madeira as a couple, wanting to stress off and relax in beautiful surroundings, Quinta São Goncalo is the perfect accommodation.

Situated in a part of Funchal, where you hardly ever see any other tourists than the other few staying here, you are far away from the world of hotel chains, international concepts and designer smartness.

We enjoyed a wonderful November week in the junior suite, going to bed at night and waking up in the morning with the most amazing view of the city centre and the sea. The lazy hours spend in the sunshine on the private balcony and chatting with the other quests at breakfast or in the garden was the best anti-stress treatment imaginable.

Like other reviewers say, Rita and her staff succeed in making you feel at home. The smooth way in which the rooms are tidied while the (great) breakfast is served is one the best routines I've ever come across.

If you're in the romantic mood and feel like staying in an old movie, or if you just need to pull the plug a few days from a busy schedule don't hesitate to book right away.

I am actually in the middle of my week's stay here and would highly recommend staying here. The rooms are large, spotlessly cleaned by Rita's staff and it is very peaceful. Rita is very helpful with advice etc and the lounge are plenty of guides on Madeira in several languages. The lounge is just as the family was still living here with a dining table in part of it with an honesty bar and bowl of fruit. There is no need for tea making facilities in one's room as you can make yourself at home in the kitchen. There are cold beers and wine in the fridge.
Breakfasts couldn't be better - cereals, fresh orange juice, different cut up fresh fruit each day along with ham, cheese and homemade jams including a local chestnut one and different fresh rolls, croissants and bread. All this served on the terrace looking out over the bay of Funchal.
The bus service is almost every half hour and Rita gives you a timetable. In town it leaves on the sea side of the road opposite the Portaleza de Sao Lourenco on the main Avenida do Mar.
Zarco's restaurant at the top of the hill from the Quinta is a 10 min climb-be prepared it is about 1 in 3-4 hill but worth it as there is a terrace. Take your time! The road is well lit and little traffic.
If driving oneself from the airport get yourself to Sao Goncalo and drive down steep hill passing the church on your left. You will see the sea directly in front of you and near what seems like the end of the road you will see big metal double doors set in the wall on your right then more metal doors set in from the road with a brass name plate on the doors which is only legible when you are close up to it. Ring the bell and you will be able to drive in to this wonderful place.
This is so much more personal than a big hotel, lovely and quiet and excellent breakfasts - what more could one want. You can even have dinner by request and I gather it is delicious. Even loungers in the garden if you want to relax.
Well done and thank you Rita and her staff.

Room Tip: I chose to have the back of the house banana tree facing room which was nice and cool but no sea vie...

I can only reiterate what other contributors have said about this guest house. It is stunning with superb views in a quiet location. The house keeper Vitalina runs the house like clockwork and worked so hard to make our stay a good one.
We enjoyed our stay and I give it top marks but want to point out a couple of pitfalls in case its not for you?
Firstly the rooms are quite hot with no air con or fan. The local dogs (and there are plenty of them close by), bark at all times of the night so with an open window they may well disturb you. Other than that its really quiet.
The bus only runs about every 45 mins or so and the last one leaves town at 21:30 so if you want a late night you will need a taxi home.
The location is well out of the main tourist zone so if you want to feel like you are in Torquay don't stay here!
If these things don't bother you then it is a fantastic place to stay and I would highly recommend it.

Stayed here for 5 nights at the funchal end of the island. Lovely quiet place with loads of space and superb garden, breakfasts on the patio each morning. Staff very helpful, didnt see much of the owner Rita but no complaints. Very well placed either for getting out in the countryside (our preferred option), or into Funchal. Good to relax in the garden late in the day after a good walk. Nice touches like fruit available to snack on, drinks in fridge at reasonabke cost. We had a room at the back whcih was fine, the four poster bed room with verhanda looked nice. Only negative was the local dogs who were noisy at night, didnt keep us awake but might annoy some.

My husband and I just spent a wonderful week at Quinta Sao Goncalo!! As soon as the taxi driver drove through the lovely big gates we knew this place was very special. Rita greeted us warmly and our room was perfect - with views overlooking Funchal and the harbour. It was lovely watching the cruise ships pass and of course the daily ferry to Santos. Our room was huge with a kingsize bed and lots of cupboard space. Also our bathroom was a very good size with cupboards etc. Perfect! The gardens are also beautifully manicured and kept perfectly. We actually sat in the lounge chairs on the lawn and admired the view everyday - even managed to get a bit of a tan!! Vitarina and Maria are lovely and very welcoming too. As we were were in the midst of travelling we needed some laundry doing - and Vitarina kindly did two lots for us - and very speedily too. She works so hard - cant believe how she gets everything done so quickly. A lovely Breakfast is served on the Terrace - lots of fresh rolls/pastries, lovely jams, cheese, ham cereal etc. Also different fresh fruit daily. They also supply a basket of fruit in the communal lounge area - so you can help yourself. Also an honesty bar - should you wish to have an evening aperetif and enjoy the view! There is a number 40 bus that goes into Funchal, however, most days we walked down the hill to the town. The roads are quite narrow so just be vigilant as the cars and buses do tend to speed down the hill with not much room either side. Going up in the bus is fun and a tad hair raising ;) There is a restaurant within walking distance up the hill - very steep if you are keen. We didn't try it though - too many lovely restaurants in Funchal to try! We loved our stay here and would highly recommend it!!

Room Tip: We had the large room with Kingsize Bed on the corner of the building - perfect!

This is a lovely family home, in a quiet part of Funchal, but on the bus route and only 10 mins from the centre by car. Secluded, quite a large garden, overlooking the bay, with a verandah outside on which sumptuous breakfasts were served in the pleasant March sunshine. Rita & Filipe are assiduous in their effort to make everyone feel at home, Maria (the resident maid) knows the place inside out and Vitelina is extremely efficient in both tidying rooms and serving breakfast - I can't work how she does both at the same time, but she does.
We certainly intend to re-visit
