“Quiet and relaxing stay, very pleased!”
Reviewed 21 July 2011

We researched at length to find somewhere that would be suitable for both myself (20s) and my mother (60s) sharing a room. We were both very happy with the choice. Everything was spotlessly clean throughout the hotel, and all reception staff were very helpful. I would recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a quiet stay - it's definitely not a hotel for kids or rowdy youngsters as there's nothing to keep them entertained.

Location
Surprisingly convenient, although it is quite far from Funchal compared to those in the Lido area.. the benefit of this is that it's quieter and we had a view over banana plantations instead of into other people's rooms. The hotel sold us a 3 day (others were available) unlimited bus pass for EUR9.50, valid for town buses which are reasonably regular. On arrival we missed the Aerobus and so got the express bus into Funchal, then hopped into a taxi which cost 8 Euros. All tour buses picked up/dropped off outside the hotel.

Room
We had an early booking deal through their website - we booked a studio side-sea view for £40 per night room-only, and were upgraded to a 1 bed apartment, which was quite lovely. The only downside was the lack of kettle, and lack of ability to borrow one. Also there was no corkscrew (cheap supermarket wine is surprisingly nice!) Apart from that, lots of storage, fridge, microwave, electric hob, plenty of pans/dishes, and a glass balcony with a view of part-sea, part-plantations. A lot of hotels didn't offer air-conditioning, but we found in July it was warm enough to warrant it and so were pleased this was available without charge. Use of the electronic safe was a nominal 1.50Euros per day.

Spa/pool
Relaxing ambience. Pools pleasant, a few kids splashing around but not being noisy, and lots of space to comfortably swim lengths. Outdoor pool was a good temperature, indoor pool deeper and cooler and more geared up to proper swimming. The jacuzzi was really relaxing, but steam room/sauna were on a request-only basis when I visited and I couldn't be bothered to wait. Near-impossible to catch a sun lounger even when the hotel seemed quiet, but this didn't bother me.

Nearby
I can't say we were impressed with the tourist restaurants, but the Forum Shopping Centre was lovely, and there's a superb little diner/restaurant on the top floor which serves good value food. (The other good meal I had was at the cheap-looking restaurant right next to the tour kiosks at the marina. Incredible squid!) We also had a nice bowl of ice-cream at Madeira Magic tea-rooms on our walk back from the Lido area one evening.

It seemed quiet everywhere, both in Funchal and the hotel, so there was very little atmosphere and I would've been disappointed if I'd expected good nightlife at the hotel.

We were staying in this hotel for one week, during our vacation on Madeira island. The island was perfect overall and this hotel is no exception. We were staying in a double room, but it had a flat-screen tv, very nice view from the balcony and its own small kitchen (well hidden, but well equipped, with a fridge, microwave and a glass-ceramic cooktop). The hotel was very clean and modern, elevator to Estrada Monumental is very useful :). Receptionists were very helpful and friendly. Very nice stay.

We stayed here in a one bedroom apartment for a week and found the staff absolutely brilliant, everyone was very friendly and helpful. The apartment was very spacious even with a cot in our room for our baby. We also a baby bath as there is only a shower in the bathroom, but as it was a large walk in shower there was no problem with bathing our baby. The beds were very comfortable and the from the balcony we could see the sea despite booking an inland view apartment.

The standard of the apartment was very good, perhaps a few more kitchen items would have been useful but we managed fine, there is a supermarket in the Madeira Forum shopping centre which is close by, and several in Funchal.
We stayed on a Bed and Breakfast basis and the breakfast was great, with plenty of choice of food. The staff at breakfast were great and helped to keep our son entertained!

The indoor pool was great and we were often the only ones in there, there is also a jacuzzi, sauna and steam room.

There is a door to the hotel on the main street Estrada Monumental that you can use once you have your room key, and there are buses into town from the main street and the hotel's main reception in block B.
The centre of Funchal is a 50-60 min walk away, but there are some restaurants close to the hotel that are ok and reasonably priced.

I probably wouldn't return to Funchal but would recommend this hotel to anyone going who doesn't mind being slightly out of the centre

This hotel is situated out of Funchal right on the cliff top overlooking the sea. It is very modern and the rooms are spotlessly clean. We had a suite which consisted of a large living room, large bedroom, large bathroom with walk in shower and a small self-contained kitchenette with microwave, hob and fridge. The whole hotel is well furnished ,decorated and staffed by really nice, efficient friendly people who obviously take pride in giving good service to their guests. The buffet breakfast is good with everything you could possibly want (barring smoked salmon and caviar !!) and the dining room staff are quick to clear plates away and get tables ready for more people. I think if the hotel was completely full ,then they might struggle to accomodate everyone at the same time but we never had to wait for a table. We were on a bed and breakfast basis because we dont like to be confined to eating in one place and prefer to try local restaurants. We ate in the hotel restaurant a la carte one evening and it was good ,although maybe the portions were a bit measly and there wasn´t a lot of atmosphere. Eating out is not a problem as there are some very good restaurants within a few minutes walk. If you come out of the hotel reception and turn left and then down the hill, there is the Mexicano restaurant where we ate twice.(www.mexicano.pt ) The menu is varied and the food excellent. Good prices for the wine also. Next door is a fish retaurant which was packed every night with locals and open until late. Further round the bend and up the hill a bit, is the Real Canoa Restaurant where we also ate. Again, good food and wine at reasonable prices and friendly staff. There are another three restaurants in this row of shops and although we didnt try them all, they were always busy and looked of good quality. Two restaurants that you have to try are just on the outskirts of Funchal and can be got to by bus (bus stop right outside hotel reception and only €1.80 one way to the marina in Funchal ). They are in Rua Imperatriz D. Amelia and are numbers 69 and 83 respectively. The first is Restaurante Dona Amelia and Restaurante Casa Velha. They are owned by the same people but have slightly different menus. Both are excellent ,especially the Rissotto in both places that was to die for !! The waiters were excellent and the ambience of both places was great. Also in the same road is an excellent Thai /Chinese restaurant where we had a lovely set Thai menu of quality. Two doors down from there is another restaurant. The name escapes me, but it was also very good. All four of these places are within 200 metres of each other. You certainly wont go short on good food in Funchal.
People have said that you cant walk easily to Funchal, but we found it takes about 50 minutes of pleasant strolling either along the promenade or on the main road where there is plenty to see and this follows the bus route if you get tired ! Buses are frequent and the No 1 Linea Verde route stops outside the hotel reception and takes you directly into Funchal. Also, the best thing is that being almost the end of the line to the bus station, when the bus comes, there are always seats available. You can buy a 3 day (or more ) ticket at the reception of the hotel which gives a discounted price if you are going to use the buses a lot.
This Hotel is spread over three blocks A,B,and C . The reception is in B block. The gym is in A block and the dining room is in C block. Its not so bad moving between the three blocks as there are tunnels and with a bit of practice, it all comes together. I highly recommend this hotel as we had a really good stay here. If you are looking for nightlife and a busy bar , then forget it as life stops there in the evening ! We were there over the Christmas period and although there was a couple of entertainment evenings, it was rather lame. Overall, excellent hotel and good choice.

good for a short break but if you want to be entertained dont stay here. If you are disabled this hotel is for you. Mostly german people there who tended to keep themselves to themselves and stuff themselves at breakfast! Unable to fault a thing at this hotel apart from my room not having a bath.

I would agree with most of previous reviews. If you are a couple try to get in block C this is nearest the sea and has the best views, floor 1 is the highest, go for side sea view number C120, C118, C116, C114 or C112.
Breakfast is good but I have had better in Berlin. We did not go half board which was best option as the evening meals are good but it is nice to go out and try other restuarants, I would recommend the Casablanca in the old town just behind the Fort, cook you own steak on a hot granite stone brought to your table.
The hotel had an offer of buy 3 evening meals and get 4, we only found this out by asking at reception, they dont advertise it.
We caught the Aero bus from airport and he dropped us off really close to Hotel, much the cheapest option, on return we were waiting at Aero bus stop which is close to a row of taxis, after some banter(haggling)with taxi driver we let him take us to airport for 15 Euros.
Weather for end of Sep was ideal, not too hot, but shorts and T shirt all the time.
Our first time in Madeira, definately for the older generation, I am 59 might go back in another 10 years.
Having checked out prices at other hotels this was very good value.
No other reviews seem to mention the dogs barking, we slept with balcony door open and was awoken by the local dogs having a good bark just before sunrise.
