“Fabulous, Friendly Hotel”
Reviewed 20 August 2013

Just returned from 2 wk stay at this lovely hotel. the staff are amazing, they all want you to have a great time and do everything to make your holiday there memorable. I suppose being a fairly new destination for Brits they are trying to make you want to return. I would go in a heartbeat as the service, attitude everything about this hotel was wonderful.
Though to be honest a week is enough on this island. We went with Thomson's and from their brochure I expected weather similar to the Canaries, be warned even in August it can be chilly in the evenings, days can be very cloudy. Take a cardigan or jacket.
There is a wonderful beach but very little else. The shopping is very limited, one small supermarket and couple of souvenir shops selling usual tat, and that's it, no little boutiques, artisan/crafts, no perfumes, leather goods. Can get the ferry to Madeira 65 Euro, this sails Fridays, unfortunately it had mechanical problems and didn't sail when we planned to go.I believe the shopping in Funchal is very good. I do like to spend some money in resorts as feel guilty when satying all inc. that no money is going to local businesses but there is really no where to spend in Porto Santo other than restaurants and bars. You don't need them when staying in such a great hotel as the Pestana, food was excellent plenty of choice for all tastes. Be aware the Columbo hotel shares the site, this luxury 5 * opened in July. This year Pestana guests can use all their facilities and vice versa, this did put a strain on the pool area at the Pestana as the kid's animation is all based in the Pestana this year, however it did mean the pool at the Columbo was deliciously quiet and empty. Both hotels have lovely indoor pools that we made use of on the dull mornings, sometimes we were the only two in there. Thomson's also have a terrific rep called Mario who does a guided walk along the beach to the town, he has 28 yrs experience with the firm and proved invaluable when our return flight didn't arrive but diverted to Tenerife, once aware of the situation, without fuss he and Christian arranged for the whole flight to go to the Pestana for an extra night

Room Tip: it's worth paying extra for the pool views, and villas 1,2, 3 or 10 & 11 are nearer to the m...

My two daughters (13 and 11) and I returned on 19th August 2013 from a week at the PPS. After enjoying a lovely holiday last year, we were a bit apprehensive that we would compare and be disappointed on returning but we can honestly say that we had a great time and intend to book again for 2014. The staff in all areas of the hotel are so friendly and obliging, all speak English and work so hard to please -they are a credit to the management (the restaurant staff, Antonio and Carlos, and Mariana on the door deserve a special mention and Andreaa the guest relations manager is lovely). It was also encouraging to see the managers on our arrival and to see us off at the end. The food choice is second to none (I do worry a bit about the amount of waste there must be) and my girls couldn't wait for each mealtime to see what was on offer that particular day. We alternated between the Italian restaurant and the main buffet in the evenings to get a bit of variety. My children prefer to sit by the pool in the day rather than join in the children's activities but the animation team seem so enthusiastic and do wander around at times to advertise what entertainment is on offer without being too pushy -they clearly make such an effort and love their jobs. The weather can be a little cloudy in the mornings but after that is beautiful-an ideal temperature -not at all humid and a lovely breeze every so often to refresh. The rooms are perfect and all areas kept clean and rubbish-free. The beach is beautiful. I do hope Porto Santo is not over commercialised and spoilt in future years. My only negative and many have already mentioned this and I absolutely agree that it is a shame that the Brits send down their chosen family member at 7am or before to 'bagsy' the sunbeds and then selfishly don't return for 3 or 4 hours in 50% of cases. We found that the reserving of sunbeds was worse than last year (although we did go in the last week of August in 2012, so maybe there were less large families). It seems a shame that when on a holiday, we had to set an alarm at 7 to 'join in' or lose out. Every day we went down at 7.45, stayed a bit, nipped off to breakfast(and we were virtually the only ones in the dining room - so where were all the so called early morning sun worshippers?!) and then sat on our beds and read etc all day leaving the beds only for 20 minutes at lunch with spells in the pool every so often. We were trying to think of a better system that the hotel could use- it's a difficult one. Last year 2 staff members went around with a trolley at 11am and 3pm to remove towels-this didn't seem to happen this year unless latecomers needed a bed and only then were questions asked about the unoccupied ones. I understand that the hotel does not want to 'over-police' the reserving of beds but we think that a staff member should monitor the early birds a bit better-these are the culprits. We also saw that some people left their beds and went to the beach for a few hours too. Anyway, despite this - an excellent hotel and location. A mention for the Thomson team at the airport and hotel were very good - my kids loved Mario, our rep.-so friendly and hardworking-a shame he is getting transferred next year.

I stayed here for one week 5-12 August 2013 with my partner and our two children aged 13 and 9. From start to finish this holiday was fantastic, ten minute transfer time by coach from the airport and a very warm arrival with drinks to great you, balloons for the children and very friendly staff on the Reception .We had one double room and one twin room adjoining , on the ground floor overlooking the pool in Villa 2, rooms were clean, spacious and comfortable

The new Pestana hotel the Columbus was open next door and we were able to use the facilities for both hotels, we used the new facilities more as it was quieter, the pools at both hotels were lovely indoor and outdoor, very clean but watching the Brits putting towels on sun beds was a little disappointing. The Columbus hotel is not very shady and some more umbrellas around the pool could be good.

Food was great, varied, fresh, tasty and lots of it ! Although the Mares restaurant was very busy for breakfast and dinner.

Both hotels have access to the beautiful golden sandy beach which is spotless.

There is a small shopping centre and a few cafes and restaurants about ten minutes walk from the hotel and a free shuttle bus which picks up outside Reception that takes you to the Centre and back, nice shops, cafes and a pier and friendly locals.

Night time was spent in the Sunset Bar sipping cocktails, watching the entertainment, which was provided by the Animation Team, it's not the best entertainment ever but they work so hard and make a huge effort to talk to all the guests after their performance.

We met many lovely, friendly, helpful members of staff, who all seem proud of their work and proud of the little island of Porto Santo. Even members of Management were all to be seen and always keen to stop for a chat.

Finally a highlight of the holiday was the Jeep Safari around the island, fantastic and informative.

I would highly recommend this hotel for a relaxing family holiday and cannot praise it enough.

We arrived back from this wonderful hotel in the early hours of Tuesday Morning with Thomson's. We had never stayed all inclusive before and can honestly say this was wonderful. The food was excellent although we prefered the atmosphere of the carvella restaurant at the new hotel. We were not expecting to have the option of going to the a la carte restaurants as part of the package and this was a wonderful surprise and would highly recommend trying them. The cocktail list available is limited but at the cocktail bar at the new hotel they will happily accept any requests and also have a cocktail of the day. The rooms are perfectly clean and spacious, maids clean the room for a good half an hour everyday and new towels are given every day. Another bonus was unlimited beach towels as there wasn't towels card unlike other hotels. The pools are perfect and not overcrowded and loved the adult only indoor pool. I would highly recommend this hotel however I would suggest that next year when the other hotel opens fully, there may be queues at dinner time etc. Wonderful holiday, excellent resort only problem with the package from the UK is the flight times as do not land in Manchester until after midnight.

Room Tip: We had room 306, 308 and 310. Which I would highly recommend as they are ground floor, pool view and...

We stayed for 2 weeks from 29th July. This was our first all inclusive holiday with our children, age 11 and 9, and after reading some reviews had concerns with the variety of food. The food was amazing every day with plenty of variety for everyone, you will not be hungry. We ate at the busiest times most days and never found the restaurant too busy. What impressed me with this hotel was the excellent service provided by ALL staff and how clean and well kept it is. The rooms are large with plenty of room and immaculately cleaned. Our 2nd week was noticeably busier and some selfish residents did reserve sunbeds all day, we refused to do this but on 3 days we couldn't get a sun bed anywhere on the complex or on the beach which was frustrating. I do think there should be more sun beds on the beach. Unfortunately we then felt forced to 'join in' reserving beds on our last 2 days. This is family hotel in summer months not a hotel for young adults. Our children had such a lovely holiday, the activities available are superbly run and the animation team work really hard to make sure the children and adults are kept entertained. This is a very safe resort allowing the children some freedom to explore. We booked the jeep tour through Thompsons and highly recommend this, there is only one town on the island so there is little to do other than sit back relax and enjoy the stunning beach and facilities. We will definitely be back but do worry that it will become too busy when the columbus next door is busier and will ruin the exclusivity of this
lovely hotel. I would also like Pestana to only allow up to 2 families to book together as in my opinion this hotel/resort is too small to accommodate bigger crowds. Our 2nd week did not feel as exclusive as the first as a result of this. Highly recommend this hotel, you will not be disappointed.

We stayed for 1 week returning Monday 12 August, all flights from and to UK happen on a Monday.

We'd never stayed at an all inclusive resort before so were a little apprehensive, but there is nothing to worry about at Pestana Porto Santo.

The hotel, which is finished and maintained to a high standard, is only 2 or 3 years old and has a great friendly atmosphere which is created by its staff from reception, to entertainment, to bar, to maid service, to waiter service - all seem to really enjoy their jobs.

The flash dance is a sight to behold and not to be missed even if you don't take part!

We stayed in a suite which had a lounge come bedroom, large separate double bedroom, 2 bathrooms and large (over 2 patio doors in length) balcony with 4 seater table and chairs and lounger with views over pool and right towards the sea. Maid service daily, towels, face cloths and bathroom freebies replenished daily. Beach towels changed as required at Spa. A minor improvement could be to return the lounge in the day time and reset it as a bedroom at night with a bed turndown service - Atlantis Gran Bahia in Fuerteventura where we stayed last year do this, having said that the lounge we had at Pestana Porto Santo is large and it wasn't a problem for the 4 of us it just would have been an additional nice touch.

The adjacent Columbus hotel was opened by Pestana around a month before we stayed, the two hotels are chalk and cheese in style, ours was pretty with wavy lines whereas the Columbus is straight lines and symetrical, again fitted to a very high standard and the great thing was we could use both hotels - all amenities including restaurants. The waiter service Maderian restaurant at the Columbus is well worth a visit. Main restaurants at both hotels are buffet service. Luigi's at Porto Santo is waiter service.

Both hotels have direct access to the beach, access is via a short timber bridge through sand dunes which protect the hotels from sea breeze. The beach, which is blue flagged, is spotlessly clean and runs for as far as the eye can see. The section outside the Porto Santo has a life guard on duty.. Sun beds are additional cost 15 euros for 2 with a straw parasol or 50 euros for a sheltered bed, both payable by signature - no need to carry money. Wind breakers and parasols are free.

The Dunas bar at the Porto Santo was great and became our regular lunch time retreat, the chips here don't hang around long! Food is either made to order or buffet.

Evening entertainment by the resident entertainment team, Chapito, was good and the bar tenders at the cocktail bar do their bit to entertain aswell.

The Jeep Safari is an absolute must, you really are never more than 10 minutes away from anywhere on this 11x6Km island, on the airport runway you can see both North and South coasts.

There is more we can write about the hotel but you really need to go and see it for yourselves.

The island has a lot going for it, 9Km of golden sandy beach, all electricity 100% green derived next year, potable water by desalination, Seve Ballesteros designed golf course and Ronaldo is planning to build a football school for injured players. The island is inhabited by only 5000 people and is a relative newcomer on the holiday market scene and as such is not commercialised. The island is tipped for big things in the future.

Overall we had a very relaxing and enjoyable stay.

Room Tip: As return flights are late evening if you want to reserve a late check out room best to book it earl...

Just returned from a 2 week holiday here (29th July - 12th Aug) and have re-booked already again for next year. We had a lovely relaxing holiday spending time with the kids on the most beautiful beach. Fantastic staff, so so kind and helpful - nice sized resort, not enormous, everything to hand - just easy, relaxing and lovely!! We will miss Mario next year though - a truly nice man who does a great job!!!!! Kids club has really nice staff nice to use as and when for the odd hour to yourself and can really relax when kids are there. Climate at this time of year was perfect for children, not a sun worshippers holiday but lovely and warm with a much needed breeze. Afternoons do get very hot so factor 50 all the way!!!! I was very anxious about the weather prior to our holiday due to the reviews I'd read but I need not have worried! It was beautiful!!!!! See you next year! Thank you so much!!
