Having stayed in lots of 5 star accommodations abroad this is definitely the best. The attention to detail in the rooms the B&O TV the black slate and stone everywhere are superb and the walk in shower was amazing. The huge pillows on the beds were the best. The towels and bedding were changed every day with the little extra touch of the turn down service each evening. The maids did an amazing job and the rooms were spotless. The Hotel grounds themselves seem a little sparse and hard looking but there are lots of plants and once they take hold the exterior will become a lot softer.

Of the four speciality restaurants (you are only allowed to book three per week) we tried Italian: Pizza and Pasta, average. Madeira: Excellent food exceptional service. Med: superb 5 Star foods and service. You need to book the restaurants all in one hit on your first day; even then it is quite difficult to pick your time as the restaurants are not open every night although this may change in the height of the summer season? Book the restaurants at Guest Relations office, booking from 11am to 2pm, this is located between the two hotels on the beach side.

The Cocktail Bar was always very busy as this is the only bar in the Hotel of an evening, there was a pianist one evening and a singer another who were both excellent. The staff was excellent and worked extremely hard. The Pestana Hotel next door can also be used with entertainment on there most evenings.

The buffet restaurant was really trendy with lots of different levels so you did feel as though you were in a restaurant and not a cafeteria, the waiter service for water and wine/drinks was excellent and again the restaurant staff was very efficient, very friendly and helpful. Although all the food was very nice there was not a lot of choice and very little show/fresh cooking. Fresh fruit and desserts were plentiful. Meat and fish dishes were a bit bland, sardines, hake, chicken legs, sliced roast beef in gravy. Saying this we did not starve and as we were at the speciality restaurants on three nights it didn’t really matter. We did not go into the main buffet for lunch, we tried the outside snack bar in the Pestana next door and the little snack bar next to the pool bar. The beach was beautiful, there is a cost for sunbeds and umbrella of 15 euro for the day or 10 euro for half day this is for 2 beds and 1 umbrella, although you can take your towel on the beach and umbrellas and wind break are free from the hotel. There is no beach bar for Columbus but a little further up the beach there is one for Pestana next door just along the walkway.

We requested a late checkout as our flights were evening time. The cost for this was 40 euro we could not stay in our own room so this does defeat the object a little although we were moved to a private villa with pool, sharing five bedrooms. Although you still had to pack up and move we were still able to have a day on the beach and a shower and change of clothes before being picked up from the hotel for the airport. Surely as there is a 3 hour turn around the hotel could arrange for people to stay in their rooms, collect their 40 euro and have the cleaner come later in the day? Never had a problem with a late checkout in any other hotel we have stayed in. If you do not want the late checkout there are showering facilities by the pool.

All in all we had a very relaxing holiday and for the first full year of operating this Hotel the managers and staff are doing an excellent job. We would not hesitate to return to this Hotel or the island of Porto Santo in the future.

Just returned from a week in the Pestana Columbus. Although a bit "boxy" from the outside, the interior of this new hotel is spectacular. Spotlessly clean and the size and standard of the rooms is excellent. Great service from all of the staff. Good food, well presented and hot. Lovely pool area, and an indoor pool if you fancy a change. Added to the fact that Porto Santo is a beautiful little island, this was a holiday to remember.

Just had a weeks stay at this luxurious hotel. From the outside it looks a little stark but inside it is lovely and if you what you need, is rest and relaxation then the Pestana Colombos is for you.
We had a room overlooking the beach, which we paid extra for, as Thomson rooms are at the side of the hotel. However, note that these rooms are in the shade from mid afternoon onwards. The standard of fittings are excellent. The walk-in shower, egg shaped bath huge comfy bed and the Bang and Olufson TV to mention just a few. They offer the facility of a al carte for three nights during your 1 week stay which we did take advantage of and I would thoroughly recommend. The Maderian and the Med were superb. The beach is fantastic and although there is a large charge daily for the beds on the beach, the hotel does supply free of charge parasols and wind breakers. The weather was mixed so be prepared for possibly part of the day to be cloudy and we even had a little rain. There is also a cool breeze but it didn't spoil our holiday at all. My only slight complaint would be about the size of the cocktail bar. It is far too small and it would have been nice as we were there during the world cup to have an area where we could watch the matches (if you wanted to) in a separate area and not on the tiny TV in the cocktail bar with the entertainer on the piano at the same time. To sum up, the island and the people are lovely and very happy to share their lovely island with you and I would recommend that you go and visit as soon as possible and stay at this first class hotel. Highly recommended!!

Hotel review

Its not the most attractive looking hotel from the outside and is very “functional” rather than attractive on the inside but its large and spacious and very clean and uncluttered. The welcome was first class. Very friendly and efficient with bags taken to our rooms while we were ushered in the direction of the restaurant. Customer service is generally very good and most of the staff smile and say hello. The interior courtyard was often deathly quiet as we walked through on our way elsewhere which may seem a bit eerie but also very welcome. Peaceful. There is also a seating area there if you want to get away from the noise altogether (we sometimes sat out there in the evening after dinner before bed).

Management were visible, walking through the complex, happy to talk to people. The grounds are large and well laid out. Vegetation is a bit sparse sometimes...it is quite an arid island, so not a complaint. It's a very nice hotel, deserving of it's 5 stars.

I saw a review which said Thomson customers were allocated rooms overlooking a building site. It's actually an unfinished part of the hotel which is now abandoned unfinished, not a working building site. We could see the sea to the left over the dunes and it was quiet and shaded on our balcony so we were very happy. The room (a standard one) was superb - very large and includes a bath in the room, separate wc and large shower, plus a sofa and a very large bed. Upgrade to a sea view room if you wish but as the sea is behind and below some high sand dunes a hundred yards away or so, it's not that perfect a view I guess.

The food, even in the standard restaurant was very good. Maybe the main restaurant's choices would be a bit dull after two weeks but we were only staying a week and ate well every night, with quite a few things to choose from. Breakfast had more choice than I've seen anywhere else I think...cereals, cold meats, breads, pastries, cooked options, freshly made fruit and veg smoothies, freshly made omelettes, both made to order. Excellent choice and good quality.

Lunch and dinner, well some items weren't kept as hot as perhaps they should have been, that's my only real complaint there (actually, that applies to the porridge at breakfast too). Maybe that's the way with buffet service.

There are several other restaurants on site and all inclusive guests are allowed to book 3 during a week's stay. All 3 we visited - the ones serving Madeira, Mediterranean and Italian cuisine, had excellent service and very tasty food.

The Colombus seems to be slightly more "adults only” than the sister hotel next door, where facilities are shared...the outdoor pool area next door seems more attractive to kids and the kids facilities are there...and most of the families seemed to be there...but the indoor adults only pool is next door also, while the indoor pool at the Colombos (a nice whirlpool bath alongside a good size rectangular pool) is for families. There is also a small family indoor pool next door but it does seem odd when most of the "couples" seem to be in the Colombos, to have to go to the spa next door if you want a quiet swim without kids playing.

Towels are only available from the spa next door. And need to be returned next door. The Colombus is not a small hotel and has it's own indoor pool and spa area...why not at least have a place to return towels here? Walking through the grounds in fine weather is pleasant but a ten minute round trip just to return two towels seems a bit silly.

The coffee in the main restaurant is from a vending machine and wasn't very good. This is a 5 star hotel! Ask the Maître D though and he'll arrange for a fresh coffee to be brought out to you. The staff are very attentive so why not have fresh coffee available? I've stayed in very basic hotels where fresh coffee is just offered when you sit down.

Nor do you have any tea or coffee making facilities in your room. Which seems a very strange omission. You DO however get a fridge which is kept topped up with still and sparkling water, soft drinks and local beer.

Naturally when the weather is bad (we had unseasonal rain a couple of times) the pool bar doesn't open. My wife wandered into the nearby open and manned cocktail bar at 10.15am to get a coffee and was told she couldn't be served coffee until 10.30 however… Not quite sure why, when the bar was apparently open… Also the insistence on serving hot drinks and cocktails in styrofoam cups if you ventured away from the tables immediately adjacent to the pool bar seemed a bit silly...is it more likely crockery would be broken by sitting a bit further away near the pool?!

The coffee was excellent...I enjoyed the cappuccinos, although they really don't taste as good sloshed into a styrofoam cup... The piña coladas and other rum based cocktails I had rarely tasted the same every time...quite often ingredients weren't measured. Not impressed with those to be honest.

The animation (entertainments) staff...not really something that interested us...or most of the people on the Colombos side, from what we saw. But they were pleasant enough and weren't annoying. Just seemed to be a hotel service the "non family" guests in the Colombus side didn't really need. Although the paella cooking demonstration did result in a very tasty buffet lunch... :) I suspect with the families in the hotel next door they probably had more willing participants in their activities.

In bed early one night, before 10pm, and all was quiet. Then about 9.40 loud music could be heard outside from the normally quiet courtyard. Looking out, there seemed to be two of the animation staff dancing. There was no-one watching. It went quieter after about ten minutes. Then got very loud about 10.15. They were still out there dancing, this time a few people were sat in the seating area. The music finished just as soon as it started. I think it was a Salsa presentation... Like I said, it was usually quiet in the courtyard.

I just think the entertainments could be better thought out and targeted...maybe put them all at the adjacent Porto Santo, where more families seemed to be staying.

The beach is beautiful and just a few yards away through a security gate you use your room key to operate. At least that was the original idea. The gate from the Colombos side is open permanently and doesn't seem to lock or shut properly. On the entrance at the adjacent hotel, I could get out but not back in (unless I leaned through the gate and opened the gate with my key on the inside again). Lifeguards at each beach entrance all day up until about 8pm, so beach felt safe.

In summary, I gave it 4/5 just because its not totally perfect. HOWEVER... we felt very relaxed by the end of the holiday. The pool area (animations interruptions notwithstanding) is a great place to relax, with plenty of space. The food and drink is plentiful, the staff and management are courteous and mostly friendly, the general ambience of the hotel is relaxed and laid back, rooms are beautiful and pampering. This isn’t the first hotel where we’ve really enjoyed the holiday; it IS the first hotel where we decided we’d be returning again next year.

Just returned from a weeks stay at the Hotel Colombus. First impression of the Hotel with its iron gate is it looked like a car park , dont be put off once inside it opens out to a lovely Hotel with a spectacular courtyard.

Pros
The staff in all areas, (Reception, Waiters, Housemaids, Bar Staff and Entertainment group are brilliant, nothing is too much trouble. I would give them all 5stars, they all work very hard to make this holiday perfect.

The Courtyard is very quiet if you just want to relax from it all and read a book.

The Pool Bar is great, nobody waits long to get served.

The rooms are out of this world, this is simply the best I have ever stayed in, luxury at its best.

Cons
The food in the Dining Restaurant could have been better, it was always lukewarm, could have been warmer, with a lot more selection. Salad Bar and Dessert section was perfect.

Lounge Bar
Entertainment was quite poor, piano player playing the same tunes every night over and over again. The Bar Staff are great how they manage to serve all the guests in a confined space is amazing, it would be better if Cocktails and Coffee could be served somewhere else as it takes them all their time to make cocktails, when some people only want a wine or a beer.

Just a few areas on the above that need some attention.

Overall this is a lovely hotel and I would recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a relaxing holiday, the Sister Hotel is well worth a visit, more goes on here, especially entertainment in the evening.

I would recommend going to The Med Restaurant, food amazing.

Beach is absolutely beautiful.

Thank you for a lovely stay also thank you for the lovely cake you gave us for our Anniversary.

Room Tip: Higher floors is best, especially sea views

It's all already been said - amazing staff & spotlessly clean. We had no problems with the food & the wine was very drinkable. Bed was big & comfortable & the pillows were the best in any hotel we have previously stayed at. There were a few niggly things that could have been done better when the hotel was being epuipped. The parasols by the pool are tiny & therefore don't provide enough shade & the hair dryer is positioned really badly (and possibly unsafely) on the left hand side of the washbasin. We would definately visit this hotel again but I would make sure I took a mirror for the dressing table & my own hairdryer. PLEASE BE WARNED Thomson do not have any full sea view rooms & these can only be requested (at a suppliment) on arrival. Thomson also have NO allocation of suites in the hotel building. The 'suites' they offer are inferior to the rooms & are located in seperate blocks away from the main building. The hotel provides robes & slippers but NOT to Thomson customers!

Room Tip: Full sea view rooms are the most private & are worth the supplement. Don't upgrade to the...
