My husband and I agree with lots of the good reviews written so far but we do need to mention a few disappointments. The speciality restaurants ( there are four of them), we went to three, the Italian - food very average with very little to choose from for the starter and pizza wasn't as good as a takeaway at home ! They didn't have enough staff working and they seemed to be all over the place with not knowing if you'd had a drink or if you needed anything else. Feel it wasn't their fault due to lack of staff so it put too much pressure on them. The same (staff wise) in the lovers restaurant , it took over an hour for our main to arrive, people came in after us and ate and left before us. We walked out and complained to the manager who didn't seem to think there had been a problem , found him a bit arrogant too. On the up side the med restaurant was faultless, from staff to food, wish we had gone in there first and then rebooked , Also, poor nelson at the pool bar was run off his feet daily and people had to wait a long time for drinks. Not his fault again. So come on management get these things sorted to give you that 5 star rating.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your feedback. We apologize for some disappointment in the Pestana Colombos.
This is certainly not the impression that the majority of our guests receive. We apologize that two of the themed restaurants were not to your liking. Please rest assured that we are taking the appropriate measures to address the problem and prevent any future occurrences.
We appreciate the time you took to share your concerns, and it is our hope that you will give us the opportunity to better serve you in the future.

My Wife & I have just returned from the Pestana Colombus Premium Club having spent two weeks there and we absolytley loved it! In fact my wife was quite emotional when we had to leave.

From the moment we arrived to the moment we left the level of service simply couldn't be faulted. The senior management should take some credit here as they have created an environment where all the staff clearly enjoy their jobs. Everyone, from the management to the cleaners, always has a smile of their face and will always stop what their doing to say hello or good morning. It was the staff and the level of service that really made it for us and special mentions must go to Luciano (Animation Manager), Luis, Miguel, and the whole Animation team in fact, Ismarish & Tiago (Cocktail specialists....ask for a Champage Sangria ;-)), Antonio, JoJo (Bar staff) Pedro (Restraurant Manager at the Colombus) and the simply delightful Quinci in the Koi restaurant. These people genuinley made our stay here special.

The Animation is fantasic from Yoga & Meditation all the way through to Beach Football, Volleyball and Water Polo which became very competitive at times! In the evenings they will either organise live singers/bands or shows, some of which were brilliant, especially the Colombus Island show with some jaw dropping acrobatic skills!

You can use the facilities from both the Colombus or Pestana Porto Santo resorts, both are right next to each other. If you just want to chill out around the pool I would recommend the Colombus or if you want more entertainment during the day and like activities then the Pestana is probably better.

The food was very good overall, I would say it was better in the Colombus restaurant than the Pestana but you can also dine at one of the a la carte restaurants up to 3 times a week. Our favourite was the Koi Japanese restaurant which is where Quinci works.

Finally the rooms in the Colombus are superb with an egg shaped bath and rain shower wet room with natural stone everywhere and a bang & olufsen tv (not that we watched much tv of course).

The only slightly negative comment I would make is the weather. It can get quite cloudy sometimes so if your a sun worshipper bear that in mind. That said when the sun is out it is very powerful due to the position of the island and virtually polution-free air so be careful!

All in all a fantasic all-inclusive resort which more than matches any other we have visited in Europe. Well done Pestana!

P.S. If you go I bet you end up joining in the Flash Dance...;-)

My wife and I stayed at the Colombos from June 23 to June 30.
Our room was wonderful. The only downside was that there was no tea or coffee facilities in the room,

We found the hotel was 4 star, but the food on offer was no better than 3 star it was never hot and we felt that the meat was overcooked and tough. At breakfast we could not believe that a top hotel were using a vending machine for tea and coffee. We will not be returning to this hotel.

We are going to a Barut hotel in Turkey in September where the quality is much superior.

First of all I like to say that I booked this hotel on the strength of reviews on here which suggested that the Colombus was adult only and that guests at the Colombus could go to the hotel next door but they couldn't come to the Colombus...........absolute rubbish, guests can come and go as they please from either hotel. This was a bit of a disappointment as we didn't want the whole family hotel thing preferring a quieter relaxing holiday. Having said all that the hotel is superb, very modern, huge considering its only 100 rooms. The rooms are great, high quality bathroom fittings, furniture and TV. It was however as if they had spent all the money on the hotel and found there was none left for the outside. Cheap sun beds without a cushioned mattress which one would expect at a five star hotel, cheap beach towels which were too small to cover the subbed and the gardens were scruffy even taking into account the fact that the hotel is fairly new and the shrubs haven't matured yet.
The food was hit and miss although plenty of choice and a cooking station for breakfast lunch and dinner. Freshly cooked sardines at lunch were lovely although watch out for some guests taking 15 - 20 at a time!
The best thing about the hotel is the staff, they are superb, couldn't be more helpful. The animation team were full of fun and did their best to engage everyone. Some of the activities were a bit cheesy but they all added to the charm. Watch out for the poolside dance veery day.
If you're expecting wall to wall sunshine and top temperatures then think again. The weather was very changeable (apparently its always like that) and even on sunny days never got above 23 degrees.
Our room was above the dining room and the scraping of chairs as they prepared for breakfast woke me up every day.
There are once walks either left of right down the beach and inland up the hills and into town......which is tiny.

Dear Customer,

Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your stay at the Pestana Colombos.
I am sorry that your expectations were not met because you were expecting a adults only hotel which we are not. But in Pestana Colombos, in comparison with Pestana Porto Santo, Customers can expect a more quiet ambience considering we don't have kids Club on this side.

Just returned from 7 days at Pestana Columbus and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We had a standard room 2102 which looked out over pool villas. We were just across from library and you could get coffee /tea/hot chocolate from machine there if you needed a hot drink without going down to bar. The fridge in the room had complimentary beers and soft drinks As others have said the room was huge and very comfortable. Great wet room with high power shower, enormous comfy bed and pillows and really quiet to ensure good nights sleep. We had free Wifi in the room, we were given the code on check in .Our room was cleaned every day before we returned from breakfast and maid returned for turndown service about 7pm. Really enjoyed the buffet which had a relaxed atmosphere not usually associated with buffets.Wine served from the bottle and staff very attentive. Enjoyed the "liquid garden" smoothies made to order at breakfast and sardines cooked to order at lunch. Lovely pool area which in year or two should be very pretty when plants are more established. There is an indoor snack bar by pool area with salads , savouries ,ice creams and also cereals, yoghurt etc if you wanted late breakfast. The beach is beautiful and we walked along it into Town a couple of times and had a coffee (90c each)before walking back and spending afternoons by the pool . There is also a free shuttle bus into town if you don't feel up to the walk .After dinner we relaxed in the cocktail bar or sat in the courtyard .We didn't see any evening entertainment so can't comment .We enjoyed the Flashdance at lunchtime .The manager and deputy were very visible and like all staff we met always said hello. This was a perfect hotel for a relaxing break. As we had late flight we opted for taking room in pool villa (40 euros)as our room wasn't available .Reception arranged for porter to collect our luggage from our room and take it over with us by buggy to villa and then collect again at 6 pm The villas are lovely , very spacious and modern , however we were more than happy with our room and would certainly stay in standard room again when we return . On the last evening after checking out we had a meal at 630pm then were collected by minibus at 7.15 for the 15 minute transfer to airport . There isn't a duty free at airport but if anyone wanted to buy cigarettes the hotel shop would order them in for 42 euros for 200. We would definitely stay again and will recommend to friends and family.

Room Tip: We had standard room and it was excellentb

This was our fourth trip to Porto Santo and the first to the newly opened Pestana Colombos Premium Club.

We thoroughly enjoyed the two weeks of rest and relaxation in a well run hotel. The staff were fabulous, the food very good and the standard of cleanliness superb. The hotel's managers were highly visible and accessible as were the departmental managers who constantly checked the standards of service. We called on the services of the maintenance department twice when we had problems with the safe. On both occasions the response was made within 15 minutes and the problem sorted out in seconds.

The Colombos is much quieter than the adjoining Pestana Porto Santo and the facilities of both hotels can be used. We were particularly impressed with Paulo in the Colombos bar who gave an excellent, friendly service. The food in the main Colombos restaurant was of a high quality and the theme restaurants also for the most part impressed.

We ate at the Madeira restaurant and were impressed with the standard of food and excellent service. The Japanese restaurant was equally as good and the steak is highly recommended. However, by far the best was the Med restaurant where the standard of service and food especially the chateaubriand exceeded our expectations.

On a less positive note our experience at the Italian restaurant left a lot to be desired and surprised us given the high standards maintained throughout the hotel. We booked for 6.30pm and arrived promptly to wait outside with other diners. After 10 minutes we approached a member of staff to be told to talk to another staff member who walked away before we could do so. The restaurant wasn't ready so we left and in effect gave up.

There are two points we would like to make for consideration. Although we had booked a suite as marketed by Thomson holidays this was in effect a duplex apartment on two levels connected by two flights of stairs and did not meet our expectations. More clarity is needed in the brochure descriptions. Secondly, a customer with limited mobility should contact the hotel in advance to make appropriate arrangements. Otherwise we would highly recommend this hotel and most certainly return.

Room Tip: Upgrade to a sea view room when you arrive.

Having stayed in lots of 5 star accommodations abroad this is definitely the best. The attention to detail in the rooms the B&O TV the black slate and stone everywhere are superb and the walk in shower was amazing. The huge pillows on the beds were the best. The towels and bedding were changed every day with the little extra touch of the turn down service each evening. The maids did an amazing job and the rooms were spotless. The Hotel grounds themselves seem a little sparse and hard looking but there are lots of plants and once they take hold the exterior will become a lot softer.

Of the four speciality restaurants (you are only allowed to book three per week) we tried Italian: Pizza and Pasta, average. Madeira: Excellent food exceptional service. Med: superb 5 Star foods and service. You need to book the restaurants all in one hit on your first day; even then it is quite difficult to pick your time as the restaurants are not open every night although this may change in the height of the summer season? Book the restaurants at Guest Relations office, booking from 11am to 2pm, this is located between the two hotels on the beach side.

The Cocktail Bar was always very busy as this is the only bar in the Hotel of an evening, there was a pianist one evening and a singer another who were both excellent. The staff was excellent and worked extremely hard. The Pestana Hotel next door can also be used with entertainment on there most evenings.

The buffet restaurant was really trendy with lots of different levels so you did feel as though you were in a restaurant and not a cafeteria, the waiter service for water and wine/drinks was excellent and again the restaurant staff was very efficient, very friendly and helpful. Although all the food was very nice there was not a lot of choice and very little show/fresh cooking. Fresh fruit and desserts were plentiful. Meat and fish dishes were a bit bland, sardines, hake, chicken legs, sliced roast beef in gravy. Saying this we did not starve and as we were at the speciality restaurants on three nights it didn’t really matter. We did not go into the main buffet for lunch, we tried the outside snack bar in the Pestana next door and the little snack bar next to the pool bar. The beach was beautiful, there is a cost for sunbeds and umbrella of 15 euro for the day or 10 euro for half day this is for 2 beds and 1 umbrella, although you can take your towel on the beach and umbrellas and wind break are free from the hotel. There is no beach bar for Columbus but a little further up the beach there is one for Pestana next door just along the walkway.

We requested a late checkout as our flights were evening time. The cost for this was 40 euro we could not stay in our own room so this does defeat the object a little although we were moved to a private villa with pool, sharing five bedrooms. Although you still had to pack up and move we were still able to have a day on the beach and a shower and change of clothes before being picked up from the hotel for the airport. Surely as there is a 3 hour turn around the hotel could arrange for people to stay in their rooms, collect their 40 euro and have the cleaner come later in the day? Never had a problem with a late checkout in any other hotel we have stayed in. If you do not want the late checkout there are showering facilities by the pool.

All in all we had a very relaxing holiday and for the first full year of operating this Hotel the managers and staff are doing an excellent job. We would not hesitate to return to this Hotel or the island of Porto Santo in the future.
