Hotel Quinta Do Serrado
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 13 August 2013

We spent a wonderful week at the Quinta do Serrado Hotel and will definitely return. The location is beautiful - sitting on our balcony or on the terrace was like being in a peaceful oasis with views to the mountains and the ocean. The hotel building is very attractive, blending perfectly into the setting, and the rooms are comfortable and kept immaculately clean. The owner and the staff are the friendliest we have ever met - they really cannot do enough for you. We stayed on a bed and breakfast option and the breakfasts were really good with a wide range of options to choose from. The restaurant is highly regarded and justifiably so - the food is excellent. We ate in the restaurant several times and the food was lovingly prepared from local ingredients. The service was also excellent. There was something quite magical about enjoying a glass of wine on the peaceful hotel terrace whilst watching hoopoes in the trees. Porto Santo is a truly beautiful island and this hotel is a real gem. We will definitely return and would like to thank Manuel and his staff for making our trip so special.

We have just returned from a fantastic holiday in this lovely hotel. As others have said the emphasis is on relaxation, eating, drinking, a little bit of walking and sun bathing - just what the doctor ordered! The hotel is situated in a perfect location. It is extremely quiet and peaceful with just the odd passing horse, yet within a short taxi ride to the glorious sandy beach. There is also a jewel of a beach about 30 minutes walk away - although beware - you will have to wear your walking shoes to get down to it as it is an extremely steep path. This is a very different beach than the main one, with spectacular rugged scenery, rock pools and huge waves. If you go there in the morning you will probably be on your own, but in the afternoon local people from the nearby village come down. We would recommend Torres restaurant in the village for an evening meal. Fantastic smoked ribs and chicken! The food in the hotel is good and excellent value and we ate in most nights.
Like others have mentioned, we would recommend the Jeep Safari. We did this on the first day and we are glad we did because you get a real sense of the geography and the history of the island. The guide was amazing - so friendly and informative - you could sense his pride and love of the island.
The staff in the hotel are wonderful. Manuel is so keen to please and the rest of the staff greet you as if you are part of their family. There is a really special atmosphere here!

Room Tip: We stayed in 201 which is on the second floor right at the end of the corridor, so very quiet.

We have just returned after spending a week at this special hotel. It is situated in the most beautiful setting surrounded by breathtaking views. You couldn't ask for anything better the staff were extremely friendly and nothing was too much trouble, the rooms were cleaned every day and the food was well worth the money. Would definately return for another holiday.

We have just returned from a really peaceful and relaxing week at Quinta do Sorrado. The hotel is much prettier than the photographs show and the rooms are comfortable, if not stylish or luxurious. The food is very good. I would recommend bed and breakfast, as the those on half board had a very limited choice, whereas the a la carte menu offers a little more variety. The meat dishes were better than the fish, on the whole. We went to five other restaurants on the island and they were all good quality and reasonable value. The main strength of the hotel is the staff. They are genuinely friendly and want to do anything they can to ensure you enjoy your stay. There are some very good walks in the mountains which are accessible directly from the hotel. Although the scenery at low levels is quite barren, it is worth the climb as the landscape becomes much more attractive higher up and the views are spectacular. The beach is also amazing- clean, sandy and not in the least crowded. We enjoyed walking along the 4 mile stretch. If you are after a peaceful, relaxing break, this is a great holiday.

Manuel is very proud of his hotel, and rightly so, an excellent break was had by my partner and myself. This hotel, and porto santo, is a great place if you just want to have a total relax, enjoy good food and the madiran wine!
All the staff are exceptionally friendly and nothing is too much trouble for them. We were there on a half board basis, certainly no shortage of food!

I would definitely recommend the hotel, and restaurant, and look forward to going back.

Thank you to Manuel and family!

From Paul

All the other reviews of this lovely little hotel pretty much say it all! This small, family run hotel is full of rustic charm, the owner and his son being around most of the time to oversee things and make sure your every wish is catered for. The rooms are spotlessly clean, the shower unbelievable, the beds comfortable with additional blankets should you need them! Breakfast was a little disappointing on weekdays - a lack of bowls and beakers, the beans were cold, eggs ran out, and only a couple of rashers of bacon left by the time we went down at 9.00. Considering breakfast is served till 10.00 this was a disappointment, however with a change of waitress on Saturday things were back up to the high standards of the evening (maybe Mr Santos needs to look at his staffing rota?) The food was excellent and the portions large - we were caught out by having a starter, then being unable to finish the mains (must to the consternation of the waiter and the chef!) The accordion night is maybe an acquired taste - we just caught the tail end of it thankfully!
The courtesy bus to the centre is a real bonus, though maybe a return earlier than 6.30 would be better?
The jeep safari is a must - we learned so much and saw so much by going off road and went to places we would never have found otherwise.
The weather is quite unusual - low cloud in the morning and cool evenings (be warned and take a jumper, unlike my husband who had to retreat to our balcony one evening and wrap himself in a blanket!)
On the last day Mr Santos cooked us a wonderful BBQ lunch. He then invited us all onto the terrace for a farewell drink that evening, presenting all the ladies with a red rose. It's such personal touches that set this hotel apart from the rest.
But all in all if you want a peaceful relaxing, child free holiday (50% of the guests were teachers!!!) then this is the place to go!

Room Tip: We ask for a first floor room and stayed in 207 which was overlooking the pool, making it quieter th...

Had to write a review for this beautiful hotel - it's a little piece of heaven - an oasis :-)

At first we thought that the half 10 down to the beach and the pick up at 630pm was a little late but go with the flow for a complete and utter relaxing break.

Food at the hotel is fantastic but don't forget there are plenty of restaurants that will pick you up and the food is really good and very reasonable.

Porto Santo has a feel of Spain or Greece 20 years ago (perfection)

I have to say in some reviews the manager gets bad press but he is lovely and works hard at the hotel to ensure everyone enjoys their stay - it's not a place for children.

We will return :-)

Room Tip: All the rooms seemed to be the same quality - although if you have trouble with stairs a ground floo...
