This hotel is located away from the town and main beach but provides a shuttle bus to take guests there in the morning and then pick up again at 6pm.
Great location for walking and the views from the mountain tops are spectacular.
Can't comment on the restaurant as we stayed bed and breakfast and ate in the town where there are some fabulous restaurants, all very reasonably priced. Taxi back afterwards cost between 7 and 10 Euros depending on time of night.
The staff are what makes this hotel special, they all work very hard and take personal pride in the hotel. Thanks to Jorge who seems to be able to do everything. Special mention to Micaela on reception, nothing is too much trouble and she goes out of her way to ensure that the stay is enjoyable. You can guarantee that her happy smiling face is there to greet you first thing every morning.

Very clean hotel. Good for walkers to stay in. Jorge, Nancy and Michaela work hard and are so friendly and helpful which makes your stay pleasant. However as the hotel is situated out of town they have a captive market and I think Mr Santos has lost touch as their prices are too high for guests. Example, drinks cost half the price the hotel are charging. I know you expect to pay a bit more in a hotel but it does not have to be as expensive. There are no tea or coffee facilities in room, surely standard in 4 star? Every hotel I have stayed in even 3 star has had this as part of the service, disappointing! They charge 1.50 for a bottle of water in your room, in supermarket in town you can get 6 for only 2.39! Food was nice on first night, no sign of a complimentary drink all week though, elsewhere in town we were frequently given free snacks including tasty little local fried dish and fresh tuna chunks in herbs and olive oil (El Gourdhino local bar on beach) and snacks elsewhere. The food and drink in Congo do Dragoneira (who have the previous Brazailian chef from Quintana do Serrado ironically!) is of superb quality and very reasonably priced, ribs were outstanding! I would recommend just use the hotel for B&B. I never saw anyone in the hotel pool, as hotel is near Pico Dr Castelo (steep climb but wonderful views)so it is generally more cool and cloudy at the hotel than in town. We used the sandy beautiful beach in town. Great coffee in cafe called Sabor ( 4 cost only 3.70 euros total!)near taxi rank, they also sell fab custard tarts! Jorge drops you off by same taxi rank 10.30 and picks you up at 6pm. Taxi average price to/from hotel 10 Euro. Open top bus trip was nice, 8 Euro each for approximately one and half hours tour around island. Porto Santo is small, very clean, quiet and relaxing with lovely people and food. Nice place to go for a week but next time would stay in town to be honest as more to do, better food and saves on taxi fares. Mr Santos needs to focus on how to improve the hotel, make a lively reasonable bar area, make sure if the Portuguese night entertainment does not attend then to give his guests an alternative or offer a partial refund and to not be so grumpy! His staff keep the guests happy as they are the key and I hope he can hold on to them!!

Room Tip: 2nd floor nice rooms with balconies

This well presented, very clean and comfortable hotel suffered one great setback, a lack of hospitality.

The staff were very pleasant and helpful, in particular George (who always went the extra mile), Nancy (who always smiled and was helpful) and Mikaela (who enjoyed a good joke).

The lack of hospitality seems to be because the owner has taken on a new enterprise, a restaurant called Pe Na Agua, and has lost focus on the hotel and the hospitality needs of the guests. As an example, the Traditional Night evening meal on Thursday 12th June the cost of which included entertainment, actually had no entertainment. No explanation was given on the night, and no refund or extra drink was offered. The next day we were told the accordionist was ill, but no refund was offered.

Another detracting point was the lack of any tea or coffee making facilities in the room!!!

The staff made up for the owners lack of attention, but this otherwise good facility will go downhill if the owner doesn't tend to his guests hospitality needs.

Jet off to the tranquil idol that is the little island of Porto Santo in early summer and enjoy the care and attention that Manuel Santos and his staff give to the guests in his 22 bedroom rural spa hotel. Thankfully most of those on the two weekly flights from the UK went to the all inclusive beach hotels at the other end of the island and left this little haven to the more discerning traveler. A little gem waiting to be discovered by those who seek it out. Snr. Santos is opening a beech side bar down in the main town. This will undoubtedly be a popular venue and will be open til late. Hotel guests will also now have a base for days spent on the near deserted 9km long golden sand beach that Porto Santo is most famous for. No where is far on this Island, a 3km walk from behind the hotel will quickly take you to a high point from which its full extent can be viewed. The hotel also conveniently runs a bus to take guests to the main town but a taxi is only about a five minute run and Eu8 one way. This is a special place to keep in mind whenever the pressures of modern life demand total relaxation.

Room Tip: Consider one of the suites

We so wanted to give this hotel top marks and it is with heavy hearts that we cannot, in all honesty, do so.

Arriving fairly late, we had "supper" in the restaurant, before retiring to our room (201). After a good nights sleep, we awoke to find "quite a lot" of centipedes, black in colour and about two/three centimetres long, crawling on the wooden ceiling, the walls and on the floor .Some were dead but most were still alive. On the way to breakfast we asked at reception if we could possibly change rooms but were told that all rooms would have the same problem. These centipedes, apparently, are harmless and tend to appear following rainfall but afer a second night and another word with the lovely receptionist Micheala, we were moved to room 216. This room also had them but were far fewer in their numbers.

The hotel is situated a little way from the only town on the island and also the lovely beach but the hotels courtesy bus ferries you there and back. It is small and a very, very friendly hotel with brilliant staff who do their best to cater to your every need. The small restaurant is indoors when the weather is cooler but this makes it perfect for chatting over breakfast/dinner and making new friends. A small pool (quite chilly in May....which we can vouch for) is lovely for just relaxing around and a spa is available..at a cost..for those who wish to use it.

Food? We found it to be very good with a buffet breakfast covering most tastes (Veronica and Marcia make excellent omelettes) and an a la carte menu if you were on a b&b basis. Although the half board menu was changed for the second week of our stay, a more expansive choice would help make it better.

Excellent walking from the hotel....if that's your thing....so take relevant footwear if it is, as some of the paths could be a little treacherous following a shower. (Sorry...you don't want to hear about showers do you?). A jeep safari is definitely worth doing though and we found Lazermar an excellent company to deal with and considerably cheaper if you are able to book directly with them.

The weather in May was quite mixed with some warm sunny days and some blustery ones with cloud cover tending to blow over after lunchtime. It seemed warmer down on the beach which is more impressive the further along it you go. A good walk along it from the town pier down to the southern tip, will reward you with lovely views whilst having a refeshing drink at the good cafe/restaurant there.

All in all, a really good holiday on which we met some smashing people.

Would we return to Porto Santo?.....Yes, a lovely little island.

Would we stay at Quinto Do Sarrado again? .....Yes, definitely. Some of the best staff we have ever encounted anywhere on our travels and a great little hotel.

Keep up the good work......."ate logo" to the staff.

Room Tip: Room 216 is fine. Above the restaurant and terrace in May was practically noiseless. Could not vouch...

Looking for somewhere different, quiet and small we stumbled across this little gem. It had everything we were looking for with the only drawback being the distance to the beach - but the hotel courtesy coach overcame that. We are keen walkers and the hotel is well placed for this.
By far the biggest plus point here is the staff - we have rarely found service to compare with this hotel and special thanks go to them, especially Nanci and Mikala on reception who helped make a big anniversary very special. We were very lucky that all the guests were like minded and very friendly. The weather was a bit disappointing for somewhere so far South but the island is simply a rock in the Atlantic and there is usually a breeze and some cloud. Overall a great experience
