Hotel Porto Santo & SPA
Reviewed 22 August 2011

This was our first trip to Porto Santo which was a very relaxing one to say the least. The beach and the associated bar were great places to chill out and eat some simple but good quality food. The service was somewhat slow at times, but after a few days that went completley unnoticed due to the very relaxed atmosphere. The hotel itself seemed a little out of date, and could do with a little bit of revamping in the rooms, the service was good, and very helpful at all times, and the breakfast quality was fine. I would however advise eating out in some of the local restaurants in the evening as they really were fabulous.

We arrived on the first ferry and were brought to a hotel not updated from the 1960 s
It looked grotty from the front the reception area was dark and staff unhelpful given keys no help with bags
Room was like a student hostel with two small singles pushed together a dark room dirty balcony and overlooked a few trees the blind was filthy. Bathroom was basic small and no comparison to any other 4 star. Hotel I have ever stayed. We immediately rang the rep and requested a new hotel This was not possible as classic holidays did not have any others on the island. We caught the 2 pm ferry back to madeira . Again the hotel was the problem not the island
Very disappointing. Impression was the hotel from dirty dancing film

I've stayed already serveral times in this hotel and it's perfect for relaxing. Architecture of hotel is nice, the rooms are not four stars but surroundings are wonderful, it is practically on the beach. Very nice to sit in the beach bar. Very quit, you can sleep wonderful with only the birds and sounds of the sea. Nice helpful staff. Menu card in restaurant is the same since years. Food in beach bar is better. Absolutely wonderful beach with very few people except in summer. The island is a real paradise. For me, this is the perfect hotel if you want to relax.

Very quiet, only 4 rooms occupied ! plenty of staff but still unable to produce either a reasonable level of service, cleanliness or food. On arrival no welcome, guidance or assistance - just a general indication of where we could find our room.
Room adequate but tired - needed a good clean & updating. balcony overhung with trees so room dark with no outlook.
Lovely Spa & good pool.

I’ve stayed on several occasions in this hotel, (I've tried others) and I think it’s the perfect place to stay if you're looking for relax & SPA, especially if you’re alone or as a couple. I would say that Porto Santo is a relax destination, except in August when can by quite crowded, and this hotel is probably the best if you’re looking for a quiet place. Don’t expect luxury. The place is comfortable & cozy, not a recent building, but in “good shape” and with a very good looking architecture…only has an urgent need to change the old TVs.
Good value for money
Very good food quality
Nice for a honeymoon
Perfect for your health (try the wonderful treatments in the amazing SPA)
Need to say that this hotel is over the (probably) best beach in Europe. But don’t go only because of the sun as the weather can be a bit “capricious”, though with always nice temperature.
If you don’t want to see many people around, May – June & October– November, in my opinion are 2 nice periods to try Porto Santo.

Stayed with my wife for 8 days in November 2010. Great location with direct access to the beach. Excellent spa which would be in keeping if annexed to a London 5* Hotel. Well maintained pleasant grounds. The hotel has been completely refurbished and is simple and elegant. Staff, friendly and helpful. The beach bar at lunch was very pleasant indeed with good simple food and drinks. Easy (15 minute) walk into town ether along the beach or road. Downsides? The standard rooms have been refurbished but whilst everything worked (clean, plenty of hot water and air con) are rather basic and small. The new suites adjacent to the spa are very nice but much, much more expensive. The restaurant in the evening would be better with more simple dishes and offered rather less formal dining as the evening menu and food is not up to scratch. Overall, both the hotel and Porto Santo Island exceeded expectations and we would defiantly go back to this hotel.

This hotel has big potential with its fantastic location right on the white beach and a most beautiful spa and gardens. The staff were really friendly, and although I went out of season they made sure all facilities were available.
The bedrooms are a massive dissapointment compared to the hotel. They are dated with dark wood and old fixtures and fittings - think Majorca 1968. The hotel promotes itself well with the infinity pool and spa but I honestly think that the type of guest who would be attracted by these facilities would probably walk out when seeing the rooms. Its not that they are not functional its just they will not be what you expect. Bedrooms should have been gutted and refurbished before spending the vast amount of money that was spent on that spa. Lets hope they spend money on the rooms now and then they will have a superb property.
