“Great evening here”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 October 2013

This restaurant was close to our hotel and we were very pleased with our meal here. The service was good, the appetizers excellent and the wines surprisingly great. We had Hake with seafood sauce which was very nicely presented and was tasty. The acoustics where we were sitting made it hard to hear each other talking so maybe sitting in the lower part of the restaurantwith the low ceiling is not the best choice but otherwise a very good experience.

“The cuisine of Porto”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 October 2013

We enjoyed our meal. On the night we visited, the restaurant was not full but there was a full complement of waiters so the service was exceptional. Two of the waiters, at least, spoke fluent English. We had the salt cod and the baked cod. Both dishes were cooked perfectly, were presented perfectly, served with skill and plentiful - so plentiful we couldn't finish them. We were told that the restaurant has been in business for 74 years serving this food. There is no reason for it to change. Some reviewers have commented on its less than salubrious location but it is in a well lit area and only 50 meters from a main road. We don't think its location is an issue.

Recommanded by hotel. Loved the octapus and lamb. Reasonable price.
True - location leaves something to be desired... but the rest 'ore than compensates for it.

“Good but I will not go back”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 September 2013

I followed the reviews on Tripadvisor but this restaurant is not as good as some of the reviews are talking about. We went next day to a different restaurant crossing the bridge and was better and 3 times cheaper, but was not in the list recommended by Tripadvisor

“Forgot how much I love Mateus Rose”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 September 2013

This was recommended by the hotel, not quite what we had hoped for in such a beautiful city, located in what can only be described as a back street, opposite a garage. Service was quick, but our food was awful. So much so that the pork I ordered was served rare. When I asked for it to be sent back the waiter cut it up on my plate with the blood coming out. It was brought back on the same plate, charred but still rare on the same plate. The local stew with tripe, OK, it has to be done but it is basically £7 worth of beans. 2 bits of sausage and some tripe added. Maybe it's me, but the food in general in Portugal was not very nice and rather dear. The manager agreed that the pork was inedible but didn't take it off the bill or even offer a drink on the house. His solution was to tell us that we should return the following night and try the speciality - haha! No way Jose!
