This restaurant was highly recommended at the hotel where we were staying. We found the food and wine to be top notch and the service to be very attentive. While the meal was very good, we found the atmosphere to be a bit more formal or stuffy than we prefer. It did not have the casual feeling that we had found to be more pleasing at several other less formal Portuguese restaurants.

Recommended by our hotel, we found this restaurant charming in its formality. Although there were many tourists, there is an authenticity about the food and service, and local patronage was not lacking. Huge servings - we shared several dishes - and very reasonably priced.

my husband and I arrived late in Porto. our hotel was right around the corner from this restaurant.
we ventured down about 930pm - dining this late in portugal is normal.
the service was excellent. our waiter, Manuel, was knowledgeable about the menu and was able to help us pick out a good wine pairing from their extensive wine list. he was attentive without being intrusive. I would recommend this to anyone.
My only wish is that the menu had one or two more items on it (perhaps a chicken dish)

We had a wonderful meal at Abadia! You'll want to go hungry because the portions are large, with servings that can be selected for either one or two people to share. Food is served family style, so you can try what others are eating as well. My husband and son tried the oxtail and loved it while my daughter and I shared the salted cod with sliced potatoes. We all had the vegetable soup and loved it--make sure to try the cornmeal based bread that is delicious and was served with the soup. Our waiter spoke decent English and was helpful in deciding what to eat. The only different thing about the wait staff is that they essentially hover near the table throughout the meal. It can be a little daunting, but does make service and the meal move more quickly. The food wasn't too pricey either.
