Location & hosts, Joao & Carmen, brilliant; very small, don't expect hotel facilities (lounge, swimming pool etc.) but what you do get is excellent; breakfast are photogenic; no evening meals here, but we wanted to try a few of the numerous nearby little foody places anyway (& the hosts guided us to suitable ones to try, which were all excellent). If you think it's too expensive, then maybe it simply isn't what you're looking for . . but we'd recommend staying here for the experience.

Room Tip: Small rooms, but the one with a river view with Juliet balcony is special

Carmen and Joao are amazing hosts. They are so warm and friendly. I e mailed Carmen so many times before we came...and she was so friendly, funny and gracious. The guest house has been beautifully renovated with such style and panache! We will never forget their kindness and help. Being a vegetarian, I loved their famous famous breakfast. The location is great!

My sister and I visited Portugal for the first time in early May. The highlight of our trip was Porto, and undoubtedly what made Porto so special was our stay at the Guest House Douro. Located in the old part of town, this historic house has been beautifully and lovingly restored with great attention to every detail. The rooms are cozy, comfortable and immaculately clean. The modern bathroom has all the amenities to which Americans are accustomed to. Owners Carmen and Joao are fantastic hosts, making you feel right at home from the moment you come in always anticipating your every need. They welcomed us like favorite family members. After a very frustrating drive into the city, Joao came to the rescue and helped us get rid of the car (you really do not need one in Porto) and we did not have to deal with it until we were ready to leave. Breakfast is a delightful experience. Joao's fresh fruit sculptures are something to behold, and for us native South Americans, a great treat, since they included delicious tropical fruit. Carmen and Joao know the city well, their restaurant recommendations were great and their sightseeing suggestions right on target. This couple really know how to treat their guests and you can tell that they really love what they do. On a scale of one to ten, they get an eleven! My sister and I travel often and can say without a doubt that Guest House Douro is the place to stay in Porto.

Room Tip: The rooms in the back have a river view. Only one room, facing the front has twin beds. This pro...

We fell in love with Porto! A major factor in our affection was the wonderful setting of the Guest House Douro, right on the famous river. The view was charming by day, magnificent by night. The guest house is within easy walking distance of many of the city's must-see sites, not to mention good restaurants and bars. Hosts Carmen and Joao grew up in Canada. They are exceptionally attentive and helpful, quick to make dinner reservations and recommendations for sightseeing. My husband, a great lover of fresh fruit, will never forget Joao's wonderful breakfasts. We are long-time travelers: the Guest House Douro was an exceptional experience.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back of the house. It will be quieter.

We had a wonderful stay at Guest House Douro, Carmen and Joao are great hosts and Joao's breakfasts are pretty remarkable. The location of the B&B is very convenient, close to everything, even within good walking distance to the Gaia. The rooms are a reasonable size, both the bathroom and the bedroom were well serviced and very clean. We will certainly stay here again on our next trip to Porto.

Guest House Douro, in beautiful Porto, is one of the loveliest places we’ve stayed. The delightful hosts, Carmen and Joao, welcomed us warmly treating us like old friends. Perfectly located close to all the sights, our gorgeous room came complete with a dreamy bed, beautiful white linen, cosy bathrobes and thick white towels. As outstanding, was the five-star breakfast prepared and served with great style by Joao. Each morning, a lavish and generous fruit sculpture made up of tropical and other fruits was waiting for us on a table dressed with a crisp white tablecloth and pretty china. Joao waited on each table offering a fabulous array of cakes, breads, jams, cheeses and more, as well as all-you-can-drink tea, coffee and freshly squeezed orange juice. Our hugely likeable hosts also offered to make bookings at restaurants, shared their local knowledge and even delivered and picked up our laundry. On our last night, we were thrilled to be upgraded to a room overlooking the river - what a glorious view - and wine we ordered to celebrate our fabulous last evening was on the house. We have been travelling for six months and our stay in Guest House Douro has been one of the highlights.
