Alvares Cabral Guest House
Ranked #42 of 172 Porto B&B and Inns
Reviewed 22 August 2014

The Guest House was difficult to find. We don't speak Portuguese and it became something of a nightmare looking for the place. The room we stayed in was very small WITHOUT A WINDOW. The only light came from the adjacent bathroom. When I asked for a brighter room I was told that one vacant at the front would be very noisy. The people who run the guest house couldn't do enough for us. They were so kind and friendly. The breakfast was quite a long walk to a cafe they have a partnership with. Also the guest house was too far away from the main attractions. Parking was not a problem - there is a parking garage near the guest house.

Dear Jean,
We would like to start by thanking you for your words regarding the staff. We really try to take care of our guests by providing a comfortable and pleasant environment and giving tips and suggestions about our town. However, we respectfully disagree with all your other points and below are the reasons why:

Location
We are conveniently located near 2 metro stations: Trindade and Lapa. We send all our guests a map from Trindade station to our guest house when we confirm the reservation. Also, we are 100 meters away from a well-known landmark in Porto: Praça da República. Additionally, we have a 24hr reception desk so if you call or email for more detailed directions, we are happy to provide those for you.
From our Guest House you can easily access many of our main attractions:
- Rua de Cedofeita – 300 mt (4 min walk)
- Avenida dos Aliados - 900 mt
- Torre dos Clérigos – 1 Km
- Estação de São Bento – 1,3 Km
- Café Majestic - 1.4 Km
- Cathedral – 1.6 Km
- River front and D. Luis bridge - 2 Km (20 min walk)

Room
We believe that your description does not pay justice to the room where you stayed at. This is our most popular room. The room is a standard, average size suite that has direct sunlight coming from a big window in the attached bathroom that is connected to the room through a large double pane interior door. Because the bathroom is facing the garden, the room is very quiet and fresh at night. This is how bedrooms were planned in the early 1900s. In order to preserve the authenticity of our building, we decided not to change its original architecture.
Still, we try to accommodate our guests’ needs and preferences while being totally honest with them. The other room mentioned has two windows and it faces the street so, naturally, it is noisier than the room you stayed at. You were still free to move to that room if you wanted.

Breakfast
We try to give as many options as we possibly can to our guests, therefore we offer all our guests to have breakfast in our garden or at local cafes in key locations (Trindade metro station and Rua de Cedofeita). The cafés are both 600 mt away (8 min walk). Our guests are free to decide what best suits their needs.

Best regards,
Alvares Cabral Guest House

We truly enjoyed our stay in Alvares Cabral Guest House. Raul and his Dad are amazing! Wine tasting evening was a pure gem: Raul's Dad is one of the most kind, intelligent and nice people we've ever met. Thank you! It was our pleasure to spend that evening with you.
Rooms are nicely decorated. There is a cool backyard where you can go outside and chill in the sun. They have a little kitchen available for the guests, so you can make a cup of tea after a long day out or store some yogurts in the fridge.
We would stay there again for sure.

Staying at the Cabral guest house is like staying with really good friends. The rooms and property are in great condition.

The thing I really like about the property is the great backyard where you can go outside and enjoy the sun.

It is a bit of a walk to get there from the main train station but not too bad.

If you are planning a visit to Porto then I recommend this guest house. As soon as you arrive at the front door you are made to feel welcome. Finding the guest house is made easy due to directions being provided in advance. It is within walking distance to the major city sites and river, as well as the metro and train station. Each family member involved in running this guest house was friendly, doing everything they could to make the stay enjoyable. Upon arrival a map was provided with suggestions of places to visit, the best way to approach the city, as well as great tips for the area. The room/bathroom was spacious, spotlessly clean and with a comfortable bed - perfect after a day of sight seeing. The patio was a relaxing place to sit - and a perfect place for the wine tasting nights which were full of good conversations and laughs. Overall, staying at Guest House Alvares Cabral was a great experience, adding to the enjoyment of Porto.

Not sure why I booked the 'economy room'. Must be cos it was the only one left then. Room (sleeps 3) was in basement facing the road. It was almost as tho you were sleeping next to the car tires on a very busy road. Hence noisy. Luckily people and cars in Porto wake up late (& sleep late too), so you have till about 8am to catch peaceful sleep. Room was very clean. In fact the whole guest house was very clean. Good family teamwork in Rui, Raul & Rita. Friendly people. Spent one evening sitting in garden sipping nice white wine (well-chilled ones from their fridge that you can buy), and joined in by other guests in this impromptu session. Rui kindly provided some complimentary cheese, ham & sardines. So nice of him. Hope he can provide some complimentary Leitao the next time.

Room Tip: Avoid economy room in the dungeon.

Our room faces the back garden on the second floor and we love it because it is quiet. I love the tall ceilings that gives great ventilation from the window that opens to the backyard. The room has charming touches such as the framed tiles and stamps and very clean. Most importantly, the host is so knowledgeable, friendly and accommodating of our requests. He gave great recommendations on where to go and which restaurants to visit. On the day we arrived he did a wine tasting on the vinho verde of the region and provided a sumptuous variety of foods to go with it. He also helped us ship our extra luggage to Santiago de campostela as we were doing the start of our Camino pilgrimage.
