We belong to the Intercontinental gold ambassador club and have enjoyed staying at many Intercontinental hotels over the years - however following our recent weekend stay in Porto, I think we've found the jewel in the Intercontinental crown! Set in a wonderful location overlooking the Avenida dos Aliados, Intercontinental Porto is a beautifully restored 18th century palace. And as importantly, the hotel staff offer an outstanding service to their guests, who are all treated like royalty.

On our arrival, we had the unexpected treat of being upgraded to the presidential suite, which was quite stunning - gorgeous furnishings, with an amazing mezzanine bedroom/wetroom and wonderful views overlooking the rooftops of central Porto.

Breakfasts in the Astoria restaurant were a relaxed and very pleasurable experience (perhaps more proactive top-ups of coffee by the waiting staff wouldn't have gone amiss, but I realise we are rather high maintenance with our caffeine needs!) and we had an excellent summer tasting dinner there one evening, with a deliciously spicy lobster bisque, a memorable salted cod dish and a very fine duck confit (not to mention the yummy deconstructed meringue pie).

Our weekend at Palacio das Cardosas was a truly memorable one and we highly recommend this hotel to anyone wishing to visit Porto. We hope to return there soon!

Finally, a hotel bedroom that's a great size and a fabulous bathroom to match - walk-in shower, separate loo and space to put all your things. Heaven. Ours was an Executive Room on the third floor, overlooking the Praca Liberdade - what a lovely view to wake up to.

We saved ourselves the 22 euro per person breakfast and ate independently every day, and were jolly glad we did. There are many cafes nearby, you can choose a different one every day and pay next to nothing for your coffee and pastry. So we can't comment on the restaurant, as we had no experience of either breakfast or evening dining.

What is worthy of comment is their attention to detail (in the most part) - scented corridors, subtle lighting which increases as you approach the lift, and similar things that just make that little bit of difference.

What they do need to work on is giving you a hook on which to hang your towels, having asked you to hang your towel up if you wish to help save the environment, and a shower door that actually closes rather than you having to pull a muscle every time you want to get out and get dressed.

Housekeeping could also perhaps hear a word or two about replenishing toiletries, as by Day 3 we had still had only one little bottle of body lotion. Or at least change the shower rack so the bottles don't fall through when you're in the middle of a shower. Well, not a big deal at all. What totally leaves this for dust is the HIS and HERS slippers - much appreciated and so you're content when relaxing between these and the fluffy bathrobes.

I can honestly say the bed was one of the most comfortable in the whole world. Enormous and a mattress you could get lost in. The pillows are so wide that if you are one end of the bed, you almost have to shout to your partner at the other side. Bliss. It's also really nice that the doors are self-closing (even in the desk!) so you don't have that awful door-slamming that you get in many other hotels. The overall internal noise was very low which was great, considering you are in the middle of everything.

The location of the hotel can't be beaten. It's two minutes' away from Sao Bento metro and railway station. The Rua da Flores is around the corner so from this hotel you can walk to most of the sites, which we did rather than catch public transport. Being on the edge of the old town, you can wander to the cathedral in a matter of minutes and enjoy the wonderful views from up there.

Service-wise, everybody we encountered was helpful and pleasant. On arrival we were given a free drink voucher (well, one of us was! Perhaps they could consider offering one to each of the married couple!?) but we didn't use it. We didn't take advantage of the concierge service either as we had our stay planned out, but they looked to be very helpful.

The spa was disappointing - there was a sauna, steam room and a gym, plus there are massage services. All in all it was a bit cheerless and unfriendly, though I suppose it was better than nothing.

Would I recommend the Palacio das Cardosas? Absolutely. I'd love to stay here again. It was luxurious and welcoming, stylish and elegant. If only for the sleep quality? Definitely.

I have stayed several times at the Cardosas. A beautiful central location, a lovely building and very fine rooms. However, it stands out for its service. Everyone at the hotel is attentive, happy and helpful and makes a great effort to resolve any query you have, from the best place to eat a francesinha, to where to buy bubble wrap to pack wine, from how to reserve train tickets to Lisbon to the special breakfast cart service for early departures. From the concierge to the rest of the hotel, a great experience.

We just returned from a great driving vacation to Portugal and Spain. As some may be aware, Porto is one of the more challenging towns to navigate by car and was our first destination. When we arrived there the staff could not have been more service oriented. Our car was valet parked, we were escorted to reception where we sat on luxurious chairs during the friendly check in process and then given a beautiful room overlooking the town hall square. This hotel has an outstanding location accomodating staff and is decorated in a beautiful fashion. We liked it so much we extended our stay.

Fantastic location in Porto--newly refurbished palace--rooms are beautiful and spacious--service is exemplary--rates are not cheap but this level of hotel doesn't come cheaply.I sent an e-mail 2+ weeks before arrival asking them to book restaurant for our group of 6 because restaurant doesn't have website and this was done flawlessly. Staff friendly and helpful at all times.

Room Tip: We were upgraded but my impression was that all rooms are excellent.

Had a 3 day stay and agree with all the reviewers here that it is an outstanding property with top notch staff, rooms and location.

We asked for a room in the back to insure a quiet stay and it surely was that. We chose to not take breakfast here- all sorts of coffee and pastry shops nearby.

Wish there was a property like this in this price range everywhere we visit-definitely a bargain for the best place in town.

It's not often when you come across a hotel whose service is so impressive that it completely surprises you. Upon check-out, we had to leave the hotel very early to go to the airport. It would have been before breakfast was normally served. Upon exiting the elevator early in the morning, we found a portable table with two chairs waiting for us in the lobby with an excellent assortment of breakfast foods. There are other examples of excellent service on this stay that warranted this review.
Unfortunately, we stayed on the second floor of the hotel facing a public square in this vibrant city. There are definite sound abatement issues that have to be addressed. That is the only reason that I didn't give this hotel 5 stars.

Room Tip: Avoid lower rooms toward the front of the hotel.
