thank you to others who left reviews as as we chose the hotel after reading the reviews
it is as stated out of the center and after all day in the heat it was great to get away to a quieter flatter part of the city,
Last week it was 34 in the shade and 41 to 43 in the town so the very good air conditioning was a blessing allowing good sleep in the very comfortable bed

we paid 8 euros a day for use of the kitchen and its pans and plates etc and enjoyed slow breakfasts of what ever we fancied ideal for us

the separate shower was ideal for my husband but the totally glass door would not be suitable for everybody
,The hair dryer was good and could be taken and plugged in in the bedroom I have long hair and cannot stand for ages in a bathroom which is often the only option
basic toiletries

the only down side and disappointment was the glass fronted balcony with no chairs or table and really just an extension of the the room windows offering little privacy unless you had the nets closed rather a waste of space

no coffee for the kettle and cups we had taken our own but needed some for the last day and were told no

the front of house staff were 90% excellent and although busy happy to give information and with good manners all in English for us
it is a short walk down the road in front of the hotel to get to the metro
past two cafes one of which has fresh bread and cakes and big bottles of cold water at 1.40 so no need to lug them from the supermarket

you cross over the main road in two parts with lights and a green man so no problems then left across the bend in the road and there is the tram/metro stop with seats shade and a ticket machine They are officially the metro but to me they just look like modern trams

they are great so cool and no steps up and down ,
when you get off in the center under ground there are escalators and lifts up to the street levels

there is a fair sized supermarket one stop down the the road at IPU pronounced eepeu

we stocked up the first day by walking and it is not far at all down the main road along the tram way
the hotel stop is the end of the yellow line which gives you most of the stops you will need to explore,
in the center if you get off at Aliados it is in the main square and in front of the town hall and a quiet stop
in this square you can pick up the 901 or the 906 buses using the same travel card to get down to the river sides as it is very steep and also across on the bridge to by the port wine caves and of course back lots of nice cafes for a pit stop , it was for my 70th birthday this holiday so extra ice creams allowed

the yellow line goes over the bridge to the other side of the river and the modern parts
the big department store El Cortes Ingles with i0 % off for foreigners if you have a ID with a photograph and a super 6th floor restaurant and excellent air conditioning and a stop right by it
on the last day after a great lunch we walked down hill all the way back to the river over the bridge and in to the center
the stop just over the river is the gardens with great views and a cable car down to the river sides great fun

it is true the local cafe bistro type eateries are simple but the Tropical Burgers chain is good with plenty of choice of well cooked simple meals at very modest prices , I paid 2,40 for a cheese omelette with salad and it came with chips and rice as well if required
my husband loved the pizzas for one they filled a plate were thin bottoms and piled high with proper food as he said ,
we had our main meals a lunch times enjoying the good service and food and such low prices compared to what we pay in France
, I will post two or three especially good ones after
All in all i would use this hotel again and again
we loved Porto and it was a good cool modern base to see a lot from

Breakfast: We booked a room without breakfast because we had an early flight on day 3 and what's the sense of paying for something you're not going to use? Turns out that at 9 euros per person per day, it's about the same or a little less to get breakfast as needed. I agree with other posters who commented on concerns about food at breakfast. After showing up for breakfast on the second morning and seeing no eggs at 9am, we just turned around and left. There were informal eateries about a block from the hotel that served our needs for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

There's a McDonald's facing the hotel.

Location: The hotel is about six stops from the downtown area. On the one hand, this makes for a bit of a trek if you want to go in and out of the city. It's not so easy to come back, freshen up, then go all the way downtown again. This is a concern because, as I said, there are only two real options for eating around the hotel. The other two to three places don't seem very palatable. If you're only here for a short stay, however, this is fine.

On the other hand, we appreciated the quiet on a Sunday afternoon. We found the hotel was well-decorated and we never heard another guest. I imagine we were more comfortable than many reviewers who worried about late-night safety closer to the center.

Room choice: Initially, we were concerned about the difference between a double and an apartment. We learned there really is no difference. There's about two or three different cabinets in the kitchenette that are opened if you've paid about 10 euros more per day, which gives you access to pots, pans and the microwave. This didn't really seem worth it for us.

We got a room on the back of the building that literally faced some kind of metal cell phone tower. There were residences behind the building and roosters that crowed in the morning. This really reduced the desirability of the balcony, but it was still a nice idea and a nice touch. Maybe it would be better with chairs and a table, but what would you look at?

The bathroom is set up in an odd way. The shower is in the room, separated by a permanent partition. This faces a sliding door, which separates the toilet and the sink from the room. Certainly a novel arrangement that probably wouldn't work for all groups as the shower door is clear and transparent.

We found the room spacious for our needs with two chairs, a desk, a separate sitting area, a kitchenette, and the balcony. We loved our big beautiful bed with great sheets. The room was clean and housekeeping does an excellent job day in and day out. Everything seemed new, including the walls, tiles, flooring, furniture, sheets, etc.

All in all, however, we did not love the location near a hospital. The mini-mall catering to the hospital community boiled down to a cell phone store, a supermarket, a dry cleaners, etc. In essence, it felt like a great spot for someone who came to do business, but not for someone on a leisurely holiday. If it were for tourists, it would seem a no-brainer to have a pool this far out of the urban core at a four-star hotel.

Even for someone on business, however, the place could use some tweaks. You had to fight for an iron. We requested one that never arrived. After an hour, the front desk recommended reserving one, but you still had to return it right after using it so others could share. Really? At a business hotel?

Room Tip: I'm sure all the rooms are fine. None stuck out as a better location.

It is a very nice hotel, with very enjoyable rooms, decoration and installations. Only complaint for the bathroom, a bit on the dark side, had difficulty in shaving.
It is well situated, next to hospital S Joao metro station, and a short trip from downtown, but is a bit expensive.
Stayed there for two nights and that is why the hotel gets a 4 review. The breakfast is the reason for the complaints: on the first day was a disaster for a 4 star hotel. Let put it clearly, it is a competent breakfast, but nothing special. But when you get there, not even at the end of breakfast time, and have to ask for butter, cheese, have almost no bread or fruit, something is wrong. On the second day things where different and did enjoy a normal breakfast. For the first day a 2, upgraded because of the second day to 4.
Nice personnel and nice hotel let down by a fault in the service. A 4 star hotel has to be more careful.

Room Tip: Rooms are quiet in both sides. No problem about this.

I am staying several times in this hotel. The rooms are very modern with a very fast internet connection. The breakfast is basic but I am not taking it at the hotel anymore, once that there are a few Portuguese typical patisseries close by.
Very friendly staff always smiling and supporying .

About this hotel i have mix feelings. A reasonable hotel but yet, not as good as i was expecting. so i try an approach with the pros and the cons:
Pros:
- Good and clean room
- Nice breakfast room with good light and a lot of space
- Somehow outside the city center but with easy connection through the metro system (yellow line)

Cons:
- The bathroom with poor shower door and scarce amenities
- The breakfast with very little options and few fresh fruits
- To get to the metro you have to cross a road with a lot of traffic
- During the weekend (when i stayed there) there is nobody around and little options to take a coffee or go out at night.
