I spent a few weeks in Portugal with some friends and we decided to take a road trip up to Porto and check out the Port wine caves and the town of Porto and then head east to drive wine country and the Douro.

At first glance from the street Gallery Hostel is somewhat hidden so we were skeptical as to our selection. Right when we stepped through the doors that changed pretty quickly. The place was recently redone and having worked on several boutique hotel renovations trust me when I say, THESE GUYS DID IT RIGHT! The design is inspiring, the layout is social, the location is perfect, and the staff is awesome! I could go on and on about how awesome this place was. Next time I'm in Porto I will definitely be back! Thanks Gallery Team!

We stayed here as a group of 11, but I'd be happy to return on my own or as a couple. The staff were incredibly friendly and quick to dispense useful advice. The breakfast was perhaps a tiny bit lacking, but it was enough to get us on our way each morning. The evening meal, which we enjoyed on our last night, was a feast, and the lounge area is a great place to retire to with a drink late in the evening. I'd recommend the garden rooms at the back of the hostel, which were cool and spacious.

Dear Greg,

On behalf of all of us here at the Gallery Hostel, I would to thank you for your kind review.

Regarding the breakfast, usually there's plenty of offer. However, sometimes when there is a group, there is a tendency for "shortage" at the particular moment when the group seats since it's very easy to reach capacity with other individual guests serving themselves as well.

We are glad you all enjoyed the dinners (one of our best things at the hostel :))... we are lucky enough to get to eat here everyday :)!

Overall, thank you again to have chosen us for your stay with friends.

Best regards,

This place gets it right on all counts! The location is perfect...out of the touristy old quarter but in a lively and well-connected area; the most lovely building, inviting communal spaces, and large individual rooms. Maybe best of all though are the hosts. Everyone we met was engaging and interested in chatting and helping with recommendations. If you are a couple, ask for a double room in the back where it is quieter. And, if there is a dinner offered during your stay, don't miss it! Great food and company are guaranteed. We loved this place!

Dear guest,

Thank you so much for your time on writing this review.

We always appreciate such comments and are happy to know you had a grea time with us. Our location is definately a plus, being located on an area apart from the "street buzz" but still a step away from what Porto has got to offer.

And please, keep enjoying Summer :)!

Kind regards,

Having backpacked and flashpacked around the world this is one of the best hostels I have stayed at. We stayed in a double rooom.

Staff were awesome. The place is relaxed, clean and more like a hotel than a hostel!

Would highly recommend to backpackers and / or those heading to Porto for a holiday break.

This hostel is overall fantastic. You will not regret staying here. The staff are helpful, knowledgeable, friendly, and not too in-your-face if you don't want to be their best friends. The optional hostel activities are wonderful, diverse, and affordable. I highly recommend participating in the common dinner, you get more than your money's worth of delicious, gourmet food and good conversation with the other guests.

What I loved about this hostel were the little touches that made it a really luxurious place to stay, even if you are backpacking and on a backpacking budget. The bathrooms are large, clean, modern and the shower stalls are spacious with privacy. All the rooms have window shutters to block out the early morning light. The lockers are large and can easily fit all your things. There is a little bedside table for both the lower AND upper bunk. They even make your bed for you during the day.

Room Tip: If you are coming to Porto from Lisbon by BUS, make sure you read the instructions on how to get to this hostel BEFORE YOU BUY YOUR BUS TICKET. There is one, less popular, bus line that drops you off very close to the hostel (ie a few blocks away). If you take the more popular bus line, you will probably have to take a taxi to the hostel.
