“Gorgeous Guest House!”
Reviewed 25 July 2014

My boyfriend and I loved this guest house in Porto! It was an excellently located home base with an incredibly beautiful interior. The owners updated a house that had been in the wife's family for many generations and kept the original stone and beams, adding in some eye-catching industrial style updates. The owners had great recommendations for things to do in the area and spent a lot of time making sure that we had everything we wanted. They included a lot of nice little touches like a small pitcher of port in each room and umbrellas to borrow in case of rain. The house is located right next to the bridge that leads to the port houses, which we loved. Definitely a place we would recommend to other travelers.

We stayed at this accommodation for three nights during our two week tour of Portugal. Casa dos Guindais is clean, peaceful and perfectly located base for exploring Porto and its surroundings. Moreover, more than very hospitable and knowledgeable owner/host Alvaro will make sure you are equipped with all needed information on where do go, what do and/or where to dine. We enjoyed our stay in the part of city that still reflects the history and way of life of glorious Porto history while clearly showing traces of this romantic decay that made this city a favourable destination for many. We do not hesitate highly recommending this place!

We very lucky to find the accomodation and loved staying at Alvaro's place. The other comments are just true, there's nothing to add. Moreover Casa dos Guindais was worth every cent! Thank you also for the recommendations finding places to eat and discover.

My gf and I stayed in portugual for two weeks and this first stop in Porto with Alvaro was by far the best service and best looking place we stayed. Beautiful, original rock infrastructure with modern, clean, architecture built around it. It looked so nice i wasnät sure if the rock was meant to just look old fashioned, of if it in fact was. Alvaro was a great host and showed us the great places to go see and do. One night I lost my keys in the taxi and called Alvaro at midnight and he couldn't have been nicer considering i almost made him have to change the locks to the whole building. The location was conveniently located 10 minutes from downtown and a short but steep step walk down to the riverfront shops and cafes. There's a gondola that charges like 2€ if you don't want to walk. If you want to go to Gaia, the famous port wine cellars, thats also just a short 10-15 min walk along the beautiful bridge.

For improvement, I think the beds could be a bit more comfortable. There were average and on par with everything else I slept in while traveling in nice hostels with private rooms all across portugual. Alvaro's rooms, however, because of how nice they look, it felt like the beds should be equal. Also, if you're a light sleeper, be aware that because of the infrastructure, if you're any floor besides teh top floor, expect to hear people walking above you. It wasnt a problem for me because I was more interested in being out in the city and not in my room, but in the mornings and late at night when people get home, you can hear footsteps. I'm nitpicking though. A great stay for a great price.

Room Tip: if you're a light sleeper, be aware that because of the infrastructure, if you're any floor...

First off, the owner Alvaro sets the tone. He is gracious, urbane and very proud of his property. Our emails always received prompt attention and his personal greeting upon arrival was flawless. We stayed 8 days in Cristal, a tiny apartment with a balcony over the garden. Big enough for two. The frig and cooking space are minimal but well appointed. This is an authentically charming property, smack dab in the middle of historic Oporto. Close to a metro stop, walkable to Sao Bento train station, the funicular and the steps to the Douro River. Alvaro is very generous with his advice and knowledge of this historic city.

Room Tip: The website accurately describes the size and configuration of the rooms. For example Cristal is ap...

We stayed in this house in May 2014 for 6 nights and had a great time there! The house is beautifully renovated with great features and with a beautiful garden. Alvaro, the house owner, was extremely helpful and had really good tips about everything. The house is located in a quiet area minutes walking from everything you need and we walked everywhere from there ( although Oporto can be quite challenging sometimes). Anything you might need is close by and Alvaro did help a lo pointig us towards the best Oporto can offer. The room was spotless, well equipped and although people commented here about the noise we knew when we booked that an old house like this might not be 100% soundproof. We would definitely recommend this place to anyone visiting Oporto.

Room Tip: For those who commented on the noise issue - probably best to aim for top floor units ?
