“Good City Hotel in central location”
Reviewed 2 September 2010

The location of this hotel is very central directly on the Praca da Batalha. The nearest tram stop is directly on the Plaza in front of the hotel and metro stop Bolhao is approx 10 walking minutes away. As the metro line E connects the airport with the city it is absolutely not a problem to reach the hotel by metro, just get out at Bolhao. Around the area of the hotel you will find plenty of cafes, restaurants and many different shopping possibilities. Mind to look as well in the side streets as for example supermarkets are sometimes hidden away.
The room had a good size and was very clean. It featured a tea/coffee facility and a hairdryer on top the usual equipment. Our room faced towards the plaza and still was not to noisy as the windows are soundproof. The service personal was very friendly and helpful. Overall we were very pleased with the choice of hotel, it overs good value for money and there is nothing negative to report.

We stayed here for 4 nights in 2 different rooms - the first had a shower but the door didn't close, the second had a faulty fuse box and the power kept shorting out (not fun when it is 36 degrees and you are trying to sleep). Promises to fix it were made but nothing was done. Other than that this is essentially an american 'box' hotel.
The hotel was easy to find (however it is still on the map as Holiday Inn) metro to Balhao and then 5 min down St Catherine St. It has an excellent position, San Bento train station dow one side and the funicular to the old town on the other and the hop on busses and the sightseeing tram stop practically outside.
The hotel is definately in need of serious maintainance. The area is also a bit run down with lots of empty buildings. If you need a grocery store there is one down the street to the right of the big church. Wifi is available but expensive. We were initially impressed with the number of languages spoken by the front desk staff but do now wonder exactly how much of what we said was actually understood.
On the whole not far from what we expected (except for the power outages) with reasonable breakfast. O'k for a couple of nights and not expensive.

The hotel is quite well situated, close to everything, altough, due to Porto being on hills is not extremely easy to get around walking, but this is, obviously, not due to the hotel. However, this said, the location is prety good.

Rooms are decent, altough there are huge differences between rooms is similar prices. We were a small group and each got a different room: ours was average, but we saw much, much bigger rooms with a much better view and also another ones in which you could barely get into the bathroom.

WiFi is not free. However, just 20 meters away is Cafe Java that offers free WiFi and good coffee and a very reasanable price.

Breakfast is not great, for the prices of coffee shops in Porto and with the huge variety of pastries you can get, I would go out and have breakfast, even if included in price.

you get more than what you pay for. great location, good size room and one of the better breakfasts we had in portugal hotels. staff was friendly and very helpful. the bar in the hotel is pricy but that is another reason to make sure you get out and explore the city which is litterally right outstide the doors of this hotel.

Very good location in the center of Porto, within walking distance to Aliados, Clerigos, and the Ribeira.
The Praça Batalha area is not as shabby as others describe. The main shopping street is round the corner, and it is a five minutes walk to cafe Majestic
Our room was on a high floor, and we had a nice view from the window. The room was very clean, but a bit small and the walls were thin.
The reception staff was very helpful.
I think this hotel has no frills, but is a very good value for its price, service and location.

We stayed here for 3 nights B&B. The first room we were offered was room 101 (!) which was at the back of the hotel with no view and smelt of the kitchens so avoid that one if you can. We were then moved with no problem to the 5th floor (room 506) which was bigger, front facing and even had a balcony overlooking the Square and out to the hills in the distance. The room was very clean and tidy and excellent value. The breakfast was very good with plenty of choice.

The hotel is in a good location but as with most places in Porto is up a few hills. If you are fit enough it probably takes about 15-20 minutes to get to the river but obviously a bit longer to get back up, especially after a couple of ports! However don't despair there are plenty of taxis (around 5 euros),buses, trams and, with an even better view, a funicular railway around the corner from the hotel 1.45 euro each way which runs until midnight. The hop on hop off bus tour stops in the Square as well.

We found the food in Porto average and fairly traditional but the people are very hospitable and obviously the port and wine was very good. There are plenty of Port houses but please check their opening times as most are only open Monday to Friday. Sandemans is a very good tour and probably the most informative and Taylors has a lovely restaurant with a terrace overlooking the city.

If you get a chance go to the Majestic Cafe for a coffee, beer or any other excuse which is mentioned in most guidebooks I think and only a couple of minutes walk from the Hotel. The interior is wonderful and very atmospheric. Try the portugese sparkling wine in there to complete the experience.

Hotel was £144 for 3 nights B&B. Taxis to and from the airport are around 20-25 euros.
