We stayed for 5 nights in a twin room.

As said by the other reviewers the rating as a 4* or local 5* is optimistic. At some time in the distant past the hotel would have deserved the 5* rating, but no longer. There is no getting away from the fact that this is an historic building, so it does not have modern conveniences, and you accept that. However, the public areas and bedrooms are tired and worn. The beds in our room were very rickety and not particularly comfortable. The TV had CNN and BBC World News.

There was definetly no pampering and we did not get a free glass of port at check-in as another reviewer did. We did get the chocolates each evening. The cleaning was no more than adequate.

The lobby area can be very congested at check-in/check-out times. There are also steps up to the next level and no disabled access. There is only one small lift!

The restaurant for breakfast or dinner was overly pretentious. I felt that I was in a living museum! However, it was a calming atmosphere. The food was of a reasonable quality and there was a fair selection for breakfast, but a relatively poor dinner menue. However breakfast needs to be timed right. Choose the wrong time say between 8am and 9:30am and it is congested and often runs out of hot food.

The hotel provides only a single PC with free internet access and printer for residents.

The real reason for staying at this hotel is the location. Its within easy walking distance of the main sites, the metro and the Sao Bento station. In fact we used the metro to and from the airport to the Aliados station for the princely sum of Euro1.95 per person each way. The Aliados station has a lift and the distance to the hotel is a few hundred metres.

There are a number of open-topped buses that stop nearby. The Cafe Guarany is just on the corner of the road within 100m and is good for a meal. They have Fado singers on certain evenings.

Do go to the Real Companhia Velha cellars. These are away from the river and less crowded. The small green open bus - Porto Gaia Vision - takes you there.

My wife and I stayed at the Hotel Infante de Sagres in Porto, Portugal on the evening of September 28, 2008. The Hotel Infante de Sagres is an older historic property, rated as a 5 star hotel with an excellent location -- just a couple blocks from the central São Bento train station and the historic river front.

We wanted a room with a king size bed, and the pleasant receptionist told us that she had one such room remaining, at a cost of 130 euro (tax and breakfast included). We took the room (number 407) and we were very pleased that it was actually a junior suite, with a separate sitting area and large marbled washroom.

Unlike many of the other hotels we had stayed at previously in Portugal, the Hotel Infante de Sagres actually delivered a good hotel experience. The Hotel Infante de Sagres was clean, quiet, and lived up to its billing as a better than average hotel. Although we were not pampered in the manner some 5 star hotels pamper their guests, the free glass of local Port wine at check in was a nice touch, as were the caramel chocolates brought to our room shortly after we checked in. The main lobby and stair cases are beautiful, the restaurant well appointed, and the courtyard a welcome retreat from the hectic pace of the outside world of Porto city.

Pros:

1. Great location in an historic setting.
2. Very clean and attractive hotel. Makes you feel special.
3. Not overpriced.
4. Excellent mattress on our king size bed. Both my wife and I had wonderful sleeps.

Cons:

1. The hotel has no parking lot and it can be difficult to find street parking. The hotel can arrange for you to park in the municipal underground parkade at a rate of 10 euros for 24 hours.

Conclusion:

Overall, a very good hotel. I would highly recommed the Hotel Infante de Sagres. Having stayed at many properties throughout Portugal, I can say without hesitation that the Hotel Infante de Sagres is one of the best hotels in Portugal, in any price range. Both my wife and I give the Hotel Infante de Sagres two thumbs up!

I really enjoyed my time at the Hotel Infante Sagres. The room we had was spacious and well decorated with traditional furniture. I loved the marble bathroom. In fact the whole hotel had very interesting artefacts on each floor. The only thing that seemed strange was the white pvc chairs scattered round i.e. in the lobby and in the breakfast room. The rooms was so beautifully decorated, it seemed a shame to spoil the amazing ambiance with furniture that seemed a little tacky. That was the only negative I would give this place however. The hotel had a beautiful breakfast room and courtyard and a very old fashioned lift which I absolutely adored. Also well situated for most historical sites. The staff were super efficient and friendly - a special mention goes to Paolo at reception - he was extremely helpful and a great asset to the hotel staff.

Beautiful hotel right in the centre of Porto's business district, just off avenue republica.
Rooms are a little tired and moth eaten but nice.
Breakfast is a little stuffy but a good selection.
Be warned, do not leave money in your room as we had £50 taken out of my wallet when I stayed. It was only when we went to the bureau du change at Sao Bento station that we realised money had been swiped!
We only stayed there one night and moved onto the Pestana Porto which I would recommend over this hotel for location and quality.

We stayed at this hotel for 2 nights in April over a weekend. We we were a large family group , with older people (my parents) , a twentysomething (my brother) and young one (my son) . We booked 3 rooms directly by calling the hotel and got a very good deal.

It is a beautiful hotel, with amazing antique pieces in the lobby and fantastic stained glass windows. The views from the rooms were amazing. The Iift was old world style with a cushioned velvet seat. The breakfast buffet was great with a very wide range including freshly squeezed juices, fresh fruit, yogurts, cereals, meats, cheese, fried eggs, scrambled eggs, pastries, toast etc etc. The service was brilliant and nothing was too much trouble. We were greeted on arrival by a nice warm welcome and a glass of port from the receptionist to welcome us to Porto. The concierge gave us advice and recommendations of where to have lunch on Friday. We followed his advice and went Majestic Cafe which is one of the oldest and antique cafes in Porto. I would recommed it for afternoon tea. The reception staff were very helpful in giving us directions for driving to areas outside of Porto. The barman was helpful when we went down for apertifs one evening in recommending ports. We had tea in the courtyard which is a lovely setting with fountains and moorish decoration and relaxing atmosphere.

I realised on arrival that there were not many families with children at the hotel. But the staff were especially welcoming and caring towards my 7 year old son. At breakfast, without any prompting or request from me, they came and offered him a hot chocolate. They made a special effort at all times. On sunday evening most restaurants were closed which we had not realised. The hotel reception staff very helpfully guided us on where restaurants would be open. this was in the main tourist district next to the river, known as the "ribiera". They recommended a few restaurants and we went choose to go to one of these: Chez Lapin. It was great , the food was fresh and excellent.

The rooms at the hotel are not big or particularly spacious, but this is rather what would one expect in an old European City. They were very clean, comfortable and had all the facilties one would expect.

we loved this hotel and would definetly go back!!

Beautiful hotel, short walk from the main shopping area. Really oppulently decorated with beautiful fireplaces, stained glass and the sort of service you would expect from somewhere like this. Breakfast is a huge buffet and absolutely delicious - something for everyone, but dinner and room service didn't seem to change much. The room service was prompt and efficient and if it's pouring outside (like when I was there!) the hotel provide complimentary umbrellas. Great value for money and just lovely.

We spent six nights in Porto in September of 2007. We stayed here for three and then moved to the Pestana Porto Hotel on the Ribeira for a change of pace. The Infante is a classic "old world" hotel in the upper town, convenient to many of the sights that are not connected to the river. The staff is formal and efficient, with Laura at reception being particularly friendly and helpful. Rooms are large and comfortable and well maintained and appointed. Bathrooms are also ample and have all the necessary conveniences. Some friends stayed in a room facing the street and complained about the noise. Our room, facing the lovely inner courtyard was blissfully quiet. The dining room serves a generous buffet breakfast. Dinner is good, but nothing outstanding (eat along the Ribeira instead). All in all a very good "upscale" hotel at a reasonable price.
