“Cheap And Lots Of 60's Chic”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 October 2006

I stayed solely on the basis of reviews from Trip Advisor. It really was a 60's/70's 'time capsule'. Only 60 Euros made it a real bargain. Make sure you ask for a corner room on the top floors. Two walls of glass give you fab views of the city. Wonderful staff and when we missed our flight, they didn't even charge us for the night we had to cancel. How many hotels would do that? The money you save should definitely be spent at the fine dining restaurant on the top floor which is in all the guide books. Unbelievable food with excellent service. Say hi to Antonio for me from Carole (the Aussie) Porto is an ideal weekend destination.

  • Liked — The restaurant and the decor
  • Disliked — The years old ingrained tobacco smell in the room
  • Tips/Secrets — The Chateaubriand should be eaten between two. Ask for a corner room

Previous reviewers had mentioned the sixties decor and before I booked, I was a little bit curious about what they meant. Basically, Albergaria Miradouro is a very clean and perfectly preserved time capsule of an upscale hotel circa 1968. The strangeness of it is a huge part of the charm. Not surprisingly, the guy at the front desk told me that several movies have been filmed in the hotel and at the rooftop restaurant. Prop directors for a film set in 1968 would have to spend hours and several thousands of dollars to create exactly the same effect. Even the room key was a unique relic of the period.

I had a gigantic corner room, which I booked on recommendation of a review in the NY Times. They charge a little extra for the corner panoramic rooms, but it's worth it. The room had twin beds, a desk, a mini-bar, two chairs...all the amenities. The armchairs were a little worn, but basically, everything in the room was very clean, comfortable, and plush. The bed linens were very new and clean.

The bathroom was also very clean, although a little worn and with a little bit of mildew. There was, however, a window with a panoramic view in the shower, which I thought was very cool. You can shower while observing Porto from above!

The restaurant on the top floor, where breakfast is served, is also an amazing relic of the sixties and has a stunning panoramic view. The dinner is supposed to be fantastic, but unfortunately, I never had time to try it.

I would highly recommend this place. That said, there are a few things to keep in mind:

1. This hotel is about a ten minute walk from the city center, in a neighborhood that's a bit run down (I was travelling alone and the pharmacist on the corner told me to take some care walking around at night...not that it was terribly dangerous, but just that it could be a little bit uncomfortable). I ended up taking cabs home at night, which was an extra expense. Nonetheless, as a woman travelling alone, I felt completely safe staying here and enjoyed getting to see a regular neighborhood, in addition to the touristy parts of the city.
2. If you're afraid of heights, this place is not for you.
3. There was some waiting around for the elevator and for the front desk guy to return from whatever job he was doing to get your key.

All in all, however, an excellent deal. And the restaurant down the street, which the corner pharmacist recommended, Solar da Alegria, is affordable and very good. I ended up eating there twice!

  • Liked — Large, spacious, clean and unique rooms
  • Disliked — slow elevator

I stayed at the Albergaria Miradouro in late May, after being transferred there by the Malaposta hotel, which had a problem with their rooms. The rooms are decorated in a very fashionable 70's decor, which is the original I imagine. Nice sized rooms, good air conditioning, decent toilets and a good shower. Breakfast is served on the top floor with panoramic views of the city, quite a large spread of food at breakfast time, some of the best I have had for this price. Within walking distance of town.

Stayed in this hotel September 30 and for 3 nights. It is one of the best value for money hotels I have stayed in. Rooms having a 60 style, but very comfortable. Breakfast OK. Location is a little bit from the city centre, but easy reachable by bus. Magnificant view from rooms and breakfast restaurant. Restaurant on the top floor Portugalia, highly recommendable.

I love this hotel. We can see the ocean the city the mountains. The rooms are very beautiful - 60´s unusual decoration. In the top floor the famous Portucale restaurant is delicious. Price? I paid 65 eur. Lovely.
