My brother and I stayed here in Nov 09 when we took a 10 day trip of Spain and Portugal. We were trying to find relatively cheap accommodations, and this fit the bill at under $90 / night. The place looks and feels like an old castle. We got one of the rooms on the upper floor of the tower. It had a nice size queen bed, although it was pretty hard and looked like it hadn't been updated in some time. The best part of the room was the small balcony off the side, which gave us a view over a good part of Porto. Was a real nice treat to steal a cigar smoke up there around sundown.

By far the best part of this hotel is the staff. They went out of their way to make sure we had a great stay. The breakfast in the morning has lots of options with complimentary coffee and a variety of pastries and cereals. The internet in the lobby was free, although their computer looks to be about as old as the castle.

The hotel is situated up quite a hill, so walking to and from could be a bit much. But for those concerned there is a subway stop up the hill so you never have to walk up if you don't want.

If you have the cash look for a better place, but if you wanna stay somewhere under $100 i couldn't think of a better spot.

We were lucky to spend one night at the Castelo. It is a very charming set of buildings and the decorations are fitting and beautiful. Location is good--about 10-15 minute walk from the main sights. The hotel staff were friendly and helpful and gave us good recommendations and instructions. The breakfast was very good--not just the usual fare. The rooms are nicely appointed and were spacious. Our reservation was last minute and we had a room to one side of the lobby and I was concerned it would be very noisy, but was actually fine. Parking inside was very helpful and we were allowed to leave our car there for the whole day even though we had already checked out. Great place. Would definitely stay again. Great price.

A beautiful, fantastic place. Lovely patio with a small chapel. Staff and management are wonderful. Very helpful and friendly.

We were given a smaller room in the garden the first 2 nights because we did not request ahead of time for 2 twin beds in our booking; however, the hotel moved us to a much bigger room on the 3rd night once available.

This hotel was just terrific. It was beautiful -- like a castle. You would never know that the street was nearby. The staff was extraordinarily helpful -- going so far as to lend us a transportation card we could use to purchase public transportation during our stay. There were buses on the street, and the subway was just up the block in a park. We have nothing but good things to say about the accommodations and would certainly go back.

We stayed at the castelo, and what a jewel of a place. It is an oasis of beauty in the bustling city, down the hill from it is porto central, and the location is very close to all the wonders Porto has to offer. The breakfast was delicious and the rooms were lovely. I cannot say enough about how lovely this castle is, the grounds, the rooms the entire place was brilliant and the price was so fair. The only downside was that there were no kettles or tea facilities in the room, making baby bottle preparation difficult. However the staff were always happy to help.

We came across it in the "Lonely Planet".
It turned out to be the perfect place to stay: the building is just fantastic (period with so many details it would take you hours to discover all of it), the staff is very friendly and most helpful. You feel instantly welcome and at home!

It's a ten minute walk to the heart of the city, there is a metro near by - also parking. The garden is great for breakfast, reading, sun-setters.

The rooms are great in summer - but probably the best place to be in winter and spring: for you really want to spend time there. With great furniture, cosy wallpapers - all period. You feel a little like sneaking into a museum and stay there overnight. But it is also a very loving place, the owner really treats you like a guest in a castle. Is there any better?

Absolutely excellent.
Two night in the baroque suite on the second floor: gorgeous. very big, luminous, with very peculiar antique forniture and painted ceiling. the bed very confortable and the bathroom clean and very spacious too. the price more than reasonable for such a room. There are other room facing the cosy garden for those who do not want to walk up the stairs of the small castle. the hotel is 10 minutes walk to the city center, and less then 5 to the metro station Marques, and to many other bus line. The staff helpful, kind but not intrusive. Sure we'll be back there soon.
