Grande Hotel Do Porto
Ranked #34 of 108 Hotels in Porto
Certificate of Excellence

Location is perfect in the main shopping pedestrian street. Porto is small enough to walk to all the attractions in the city. Hotel has an old world charm and style. Room is comfortable. Staff were helpful at reception and in the garage.
On the second day the breakfast room was overcrowded so it was difficult to get a seat. There were only 2 staff on duty to bring out new food and clear table. This was impossible for them so we had to help ourselves to clear up the tables. But, hey, get over this and get on with the holiday.

The Hotel was difficult to find by car as the entrance is in a pedestrian zone. When we booked the room, the Hotel web-site would not allow us to book meals but we expeccted to be able to make reservations on our arrival, particularly for Christmas Eve which is the more important feast in Portugal. The initial impression was very good as the common areas looked as though they had been recently re-furbished and were beautifully decorated. However, we went through a door to the section where our room was and it looked as though we were in the servants quarters. The room looked as though the owners had spent 5o euros on the decor and furniture. The bathroom had the minimum requirements- a plastic shower curtain, no tissues and a hair dryer that had seen better days.
The food at breakfast was basic fare and on four of the five days we stayed, there was either no bacon, sliced bread for toast (I was told that they had run out), or baked beans. Table service was minimal. The bar was run by a man who acted as though it was his private fiefdom and we were unwelcome intruders. There was no dry ginger for my drink (you can buy it in the super-market) and the bar was closed at times you would have expected it to be open. Worse was to come.
On Christmas Eve at about 5 pm we were told that they could not accommodate us for the evening meal and we were sent to another hotel (The Dom Hendrick) which was about a 10-15 minute walk away. At our own expense. No alternative was offered, although we could have been seated in one of the communal rooms. We returned to the Grand Hotel after our evening meal and saw people who clearly were not guests of the hotel getting into a taxi. The good news is that the restaurent staff at the Dom Hendrick Hotel made us very, very welcome and we ate there on two other occasions.
To close, my husband, who has spent his working life travelling the world, said that he had never been refused an evening meal when he was a paying guest.

The location is perfect - in the middle of walking street with the best shops, close to metro station and genuine bazaar. Worth 4*. Beautiful lobby and bar area. Rooms are rather small, but perfectly clean. Very attentive staff. Breakfast might have been a bit better - but, at least, juice not diluted!

Fantastic hotel right in the middle of the city yet very quiet, easy walking distance to most of the main sites and just a 1 minute walk from the tram station to take you direct to the airport.

We were given a suite on the 3rd floor, for views you need to overlook what's directly below. The room was enormous, modern decor, simple but very clean bathroom, fantastic for a family as there was way too much space. Only complaint on the room was that the heating system gurgled and grumbled all night but with it being such an old building, it's almost to be expected.

I would definitely recommend taking the breakfast as, compared to other hotel buffets, the continental breakfast was fantastic. Decent juice instead of out of a machine, good coffee, great selection of breads and pastries and lots of fresh fruit and some amazing fig jam! (and no mini-portions to be seen!!!!!). All served in a gloriously sumptuous dining room. In addition, I would also recommend taking lunch in the hotel. It makes a nice break from a long day of sightseeing and walking up and down hills, the service is amazing, the price is well worth it and and the quality of the food is fantastic.

Would definitely recommend and return next time.

We had booked the hotel for 2 nights, bus sadly we just stayed for one.
We left after we found 2 huge cockroaches in our room.
one in the bath and one in our BED!
The room we had was one on the lower floor of the hotel.

I have to give the staff a credit that they took care of the problem in a great and professional way, and got us a room in an other hotel (as they where booked full) immediately!

I would even go back there as it is a good average Price/Value hotel.
But not one of the lower floor rooms!

A very old world hotel with hints of bygone glamour. Good location, but quite a long walk down a steep hill to old town. However we found the old part of town touristy and over-rated. The authenic back street restaurants are some of the best we have found in Portugal. Especailly ADEGA S. NICOLAU. This hotel was a great location for a walking tour of Porto and we enjoyed the quiet location. Internet access at this hotel is VERY expensive.

The location of the hotel is excellent. Near to train station, metro station and also many sightseeing. The famous Majestic cafe is close to the hotel.

The standard double bed room is relatively small but acceptable. Attached bathroom and toilet do impressed us. It is nice. However,, the double is a bit "hummmm". On the other hand. there is not much choice for breakfast. By the way, coffee is not included in breakfast, you have to pay. It is not expensive.

If you access the WiFi (with 2euro/hour or 10euro/day access) with your own laptop, the background music of hotel's website was annoying. You have to log in through hotel's website. There is no option for your to silent the background music but mute your laptop's speaker.
