“Great location - nice rooms”
Reviewed 23 August 2012

The dockside 'Ribeira' area of Porto is always full of life and across the river Douro, you face the port wine district where Sandeman's, Taylor's and Crofts are based. Being by the river means you literally step out to the main tourist restaurants, the Dom Luis bridge and a lot of the night time action. The rooms were spacious and like most of the buildings in the area, it's old and made of solid granite blocks - very atmospheric. You're given a glass of port on arrival and we found the staff friendly and efficient. Recommend!

If you look at the typical Porto image on a guide you can probably spot this hotel. It is a part of the World Heritage Site registered in 1996 by UNESCO. My room wasn't in the historic building though, but in a more recent one just behind and it faced the pedestrian alley and not the square. However the view on the city and the bridge was good. You reach the newer building going through a corridor and using a second elevator. The room was large and tidy but it betrayed a little the expectations after seeing the magnificent frontage of the old building.

The wifi is free but I strangely had to wait 15 minutes to get the password delivered to my room and it lasted just 30 minutes since the first access. You can ask for more free 30 minutes sessions but it is a bit annoying. I experienced this in many other hotels however. For foreign travelers the cost of 3G data is still very high so a comfortable access to wifi is crucial if you have to steadily check and reply mails for business.

The location is just the best possible, a perfect starting point to explore the entire city during the day and surrounded at night by dozens of restaurants and bar within 2 minutes walking distance.

I also enjoyed a lot an early breakfast. I sit outside with a splendid view on the Douro river, the city was still silent, a idyllic moment. The food was very good too.

I would definitely recommend this hotel, my advice is just to invest in one of the best rooms.

Room Tip: Choose a room with view on the Douro river.

We stayed for two nights in July/August and had a lovely room overlooking the Doura. The windows were locked so had to call down to reception. Very prompt and the receptionist explained that as it was a room close to the pavement outside they had had problems before of people breaking in when the windows were left open. She asked us to sign a disclaimer which I don't think would stand up in court. Mind you it is Portugal! Well she unlocked the windows and left with the key! No problems as the windows were fine when closed and unlocked and you have a good sized safe in the rooms as well. No problems with noise and lovely to pull open the curtains and see the keyside come to life. There is an outside bar area but it's at the side by the entrance and is in the shade most of the day. Also there was an unfortunate wiff from the drains directly outside the entrance. No problems within the hotel though. We visited Garhams Port lodge and had a tour. Excellent. Ate out in the evening locally and although the food was O K the main problem were pigeons and seagulls after your food. Beware! Unfortunately a few beggers around at night but just be firm with them and they go away. Porto does look a bit tired but is a great place to stay for a couple of days. The hotel wins hands down for its position and if we were to visit Porto again I would certainly stay at Pestana again.

Room Tip: A bit more expensive but any room overlooking the Doura. Great to watch the boats and life in genera...

Right on the river front in prime location with great view across river. Our room on 3rd floor had 5 windows - 4 opening onto balcony. Room spacious, very comfy huge bed, lovely marble bathroom.Slept with windows open - only problem that there is busy nightlife at weekends and roadsweepers up early and make noise - fine with windows shut - good air conditioning.Staff multi-lingual and very helpful. Breakfast - good choice continental breakfast. Will use again as ideally located, pleasant and good value.

Room Tip: Ask for sea view

We stayed at the Pestana Porto Hotel for three nights at the beginning of our 10 day holiday in northern Portugal. It was a great start to the holiday. We took a taxi from the airport (about 40 euros) and arrived at about 10pm. We were delighted to be welcomed to our room with a complimentary white port and tonic. The room was very large and well appointed. We were at the back of the hotel, and as the alleyways in this old part of town are very narrow our Juliet balcony looked straight across to the buildings opposite, but we didn't find this a problem. The rooms on the other side had river views, but how much time do you spend in your room looking out of the window? The breakfasts were excellent, served in an attractive room with a couple of tables outside on the old walkway. We were lucky enough to have one of these on our last morning. The location is great, in the centre of the world heritage area and near many bars and restaurants, but this can make it a little bit noisy at night. We would recommend taking one of the open top bus tours as a great way to see the city and its environs. Our bus ticket included a short river tour, which we also enjoyed.

The location could not be better - and the staff was friendly and so very helpful. Everyplace you want to see is within walking distance from this hotel. The breakfast was diverse and enjoyable. Get a river-view room if you can - it is worth the upgrade. The rooms vary in size so look at this too. I would definitely make this my hotel of choice when visiting Porto. Amazing value and most enjoyable for the three nights we stayed.

Room Tip: A room with a river view is worth the upgrade.

Best location. Right on the water and in the heart of everything.

However, because of this it can also be very loud at night. The Portuguese have a very late dinner followed by a fantastic nightlife which if fun if you're participating, less fun if you're trying to sleep.

Hotel staff was fantastic.

Wifi is "free" but you need a new code every 30 minutes. Also, I could not get a consistent signal in my room on the 5th floor.

Hotel bar is VERY expensive - 5 euro for a litre of tonic water. There is a mini-market half a block up the hill which is much MUCH cheaper. Market is closed Sundays though.

Also, be advised that because of the location of the hotel, there are driving restrictions during sometimes in the morning and afternoon. This means that if you take a taxi (or drive) you will not be able to get to the door of the hotel. Our taxi dropped us off at the top of the hill and we had to walk with our luggage down the hill. It is not far and should not be a problem for most but be aware if anyone in your party has mobility issues.

Hotel itself is comfortable and clean. Could use some updating but I would happily stay here again.

Room Tip: Rooms on the 5th floor have a little balcony to stand on.
