My comments on other reviews are; Yes the bellhop is there but smiled and retreated when we said we would manage. Our complimentary drinks were most welcome as we had carried our bags from the train station on quite a hot day. I though the breakfast choice was very good and the orange juice fresh. But our lighting was certainly not adequate for reading. All staff appeared genuinely polite and friendly. I was also somewhat surprised that building work was carried out peak season. Location, location, location. Yes sure it's at the bottom of a hill but wherever you're based in Porto your stay will involve walking up and down lots of hills.
I was happy in this hotel.

We stayed here for 2 nights and it is a great location on the Douro river, with views of the port wine lodges. We were concerned about noise from the river but our river view room was quiet and very comfortable. That is until Monday morning when the drilling and banging started right adjacent to our room where the hotel is being extended. We complained to reception as we were not made aware that this would be happening. They apologised and checked to see if any other rooms were available to move us to. They weren't. We complained that we were charged full price for the room and were eventually given a small discount for the second night and our car parking for free. Just a shame we had to ask.
The staff at the hotel were very pleasant and helpful particularly the receptionists who were bearing the brunt from guests disgruntled by the building work. Breakfast was poor. No fresh orange juice, cheap yogurt and over cooked pastries. Waitresses seem to make themselves scarce and didn't top up coffee without asking.
Could be a lovely hotel once the building work is complete and more attention is given to detail.

Room Tip: Go for a river view away from the building work!

The hotel is advertised as a four star hotel and there were some nice flourishes consistent with this rating. Sadly, the hotel was let down by the basics and, on the basis of our stay, we couldn’t recommend it.

We were greeted at reception by one of the staff offering us a welcome drink. Nice, but it would have been good to give us a chance to put our bags down (and having a free hand) before offering a drink. All a bit rushed. And with the bell-hop hovering very close by, it was getting a bit crowded in reception.

Our overall impression was of a dingy hotel in need of modernisation and, ironically, one of our complaints was that noisy modernisation was being carried out. On arriving at our room, there was drilling right into one of the rooms adjoining ours. Fortunately, we were going straight out but it’s surprising that a room was let out right next to building works.

The room was not terribly well lit, with little natural light and little electric light. The floor mounted electric lamp was not working, compounding the problem.

The room was also tatty. The shaver socket in the bathroom was loose and the music system in the room was broken.

Breakfast was okay – not a great selection. Orange juice was not fresh (possibly cordial) and coffee wasn’t great.

As we only stayed one night, we didn’t complain and I suspect, had we done so, that a few problems would have been resolved. But overall, our impression was of a hotel trying to live up to its four star rating by providing a state-of-the-art (but broken!) music system in the room, arrival drinks but without paying attention to the basics of running a well-lit and functioning hotel.

Room Tip: Stay in another hotel.

It is located in the most crowded place in Porto but once you are inside it is perfectly quiet and calm. We enjoyed four nights there and we have nothing to complain. Breakfast is rather small in choice but a great quality, all people there very friendly and extremely polite. We especially appreciate they do not always ask "how are you" but quietly wait until we ask for something and then they help precisely. It is a perfect hotel for people looking for a quiet, quality hotel. And everything important for a tourist in Porto is very close, walking distance.

We had two nights in this lovely property before catching a riverboat cruise up the Douro River. Nothing could have been done better. We spent the extra money on a river view room. I highly recommend that. The room was large and the view across the river toward Vila Nova de Gaia and all the port wine warehouses was beautiful. We were up on the 4th floor so street noise was not a problem despite being in the middle of the action in the Ribeira District. One of our bags was lost on the way over and the hotel staff helped us immensely in our campaign to locate the bag (we did!). They also helped us in every other way possible with directions, taxis, etc. Excellent service. Breakfast was splendid, tasty and varied. Public spaces were pleasant. Just a couple of warnings: This hotel is at river level. All the sights are UPHILL from here, so put on your walking shoes. Second, forget your American expectations for washcloths, an easy-in easy-out tub (why do they make those things so high?), or a shower curtain that pulls all the way around. Those are less than minor in comparison to the rest of the experience. If I go back to Porto in my life, I'm staying at the Pestana.

Room Tip: River view up high.

Great location. Good service and breakfast. A room with Riverview is a must. Try to get one on the corner. With balcony. The rooms in the middle are a bit small. Rooms are sound proof. Quiet a necessity since the Praca is lively.

Room Tip: Corner room...

We stayed at the hotel for 2 nights in August 2014. The hotel is right along the water front and in the heart of all the action.

The room was lovely and clean. The beds were very comfortable and the pillows were amazing - I need to find our where to get them!

The hotel had a great breakfast buffet that offered many choices - something for everyone.

You can walk to everything from this location.

I highly recommend this hotel!
