“Nice hotel with great views over the river and Vila Nova de Gaia”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 March 2010

We decided to visit Porto, since it it the birth place of port, and we could not have picked a better hotel. The hotel is located along the river Douro in Porto and overlooks Vila Nova de Gaia, the economic heart for the production and distribution of Port. From the hotel it is just a short walk across the river to all the old port distributors and warehouses and at night, if you have a room overlooking the river, you have beautiful views.

The hotel is relatively expensive but the charm of the room, the great views and a relatively good breakfast does make it worth it if that is what you are there for

Great hotel, very art deco and friendly English speaking staff.
Breakfast was a real treat with champagne available.
If you stay at this hotel, u must request a river view, you won't regret it.
Central to all of the city, nightlife is fun, port wineries all over and near by. Rather than go to the wineries, go to the Solar where they give u samples of any port made in portugal. Naturally, samples cost.

The best restaurant we went to was across the bridge on the other side of the river. It was called Provas Do Cais. without a doubt, order the shrimp bread soup. It's a meal in itself...the best

Have been to Porto 3 times and have stayed here each time. Smallish friendly hotel on the edge of the river. Well equipped rooms. Good breakfast. Free internet access. Wouldnt stay anywhere else if visiting the city again.

The hotel is ideally situated alongside the Douro river and directly opposite the famous wine cellars. We stayed for three nights and found the hotel mostly lived up to its reviews. The breakfast buffet was very good with plenty of choice. A problem with one of our balcony doors was fixed within an hour, even though it was a Sunday morning. Porto was colder than we expected and the heating in our room through a grille in the ceiling (?) was hugely inefficient and left us feeling chilly at times. Apart from that we were pleased with our stay and the room rate we got from Expedia.

My husband and I stayed at the Pestana Porto for two nights at the beginning of this year. We traveled with our son and his wife and our infant grandson. The hotel was most accomodating and we had two rooms near one another on the same floor. Our room was quite large, by Eruopean standards and had four windows, two of whch opened onto small balconies! These overlooked the Douro river where we had lovely views of the bridges and the port houses across on the other side. The bed was quite large and comfortable. The bathroom was very large and beautifully appointed. There was no separate shower and I did have some issues with the shower in the bathtub. I found the footing to be a bit precarious and followed the advice I had been given by a tour guide on a previous trip to put a wet towel on the bottom of the tub to stand on to prevent slipping. It did help.
The flat screenTV and modern radio in the room had good connections and we enjoyed music to our taste throughout our stay. Although WIFI connections are available, the fees are absurd and not worth the effort. I did call to check on it and not only was the service expenesive, but it was not currently avilable. Evidently the hotel doesn't have a good router and once you pay you may or may not have a connection. I was happy that I had an alternative source for connecting to the internet.
The breakfast, which is included in the price of the room, is quite nice. The room in which it is served overlooks the river. Threre is a full buffet with eggs, bacon, all kinds of bread, jams, fruit, cheese, cereals, etc. Even bubbly if you are in the mood to really celebrate in the morning.
There are tons of bars and cafes and restaurants and gift shops just steps outside the door of the hotel. There couldn't be a better location if one is visiting the city.

Had a very nice two night stay here. We were a party of 4 adults and one infant.

Pros:
Location, location, location!:
You aboslutely can't beat the location of this hotel. Right on the Praca de Ribeira with incredible views of the Douro, the Dom Luis I bridge and Vila Nova de Gaia and the Port cellars across the river. Would definitely recommend getting a room with a river view, but even without, the location is still fantastic for exploring the best part or Porto.

There's no onsite parking here, but there's an underground lot just 2 blocks away that's 12 EUR per night (with the hotel discount)... a pretty good deal for downtown Porto. You can pull your car up to the front of the hotel to unload your bags. But given the great location, you're not going to need a car here anyway as you can walk to pretty much everything.

Beautiful rooms with dramatic views:
We had two rooms on different sides of the hotel. One was on a corner with nice views of the Praca, the bridge and parts of the Douro and the other had even better views across the river to Gaia. The differences in the rooms are pretty substantial, so if you have the choice of multiple rooms I'd definitely recommend looking at them all before deciding as there's alot of variety.

Cons:
Internet:
One of my personal pet peves is hotels that charge ridiculous prices for internet access. Unfortunately, the Pestana Porto hotel takes gouging to a new level... they charged 8 EUR per hour for internet access! That's ridiculous and insulting. We wound up using my cell phone as a wireless modem instead. This was really the only issue I had with the hotel... and honestly, if it weren't for this, I'd probably have given it 5 stars. But nickle-and-diming like that can put a damper on an otherwise perfect stay.

It is located right on the water, lots of restaurants around, lots of people about. All this made it difficult to get to hotel by car. Parking was an adventure in itself. We had to park about a block away, then walk back. Aside from that, wished we could have stayed in Porto for more than two days.
