If internally the Se (Cathedral) is a fairly modest, dark experience, then the Sao Francisco is bling capital, with impressive gilded intricate carvings. Presumably paid forin the C17th by local benefactors, all trying to out do each other with the lavishness of their gifts ( and to curry favour within the church establishment).
The result today is a magnificent display of high Catholic church decoration, with the opportunity to reflect just how important religion was in the daily life in the C17th.
As with so much from the past , it takes a little detective work to understand some of the allegorical thinking behind the paintings. The carvings are quite simply magnificent.
