If internally the Se (Cathedral) is a fairly modest, dark experience, then the Sao Francisco is bling capital, with impressive gilded intricate carvings. Presumably paid forin the C17th by local benefactors, all trying to out do each other with the lavishness of their gifts ( and to curry favour within the church establishment).
The result today is a magnificent display of high Catholic church decoration, with the opportunity to reflect just how important religion was in the daily life in the C17th.
As with so much from the past , it takes a little detective work to understand some of the allegorical thinking behind the paintings. The carvings are quite simply magnificent.

I love this church. It has so many beautiful religious decorations. Everywhere one looks it amazing. The carvings and figures are impressive. In my opinion it is the best church in Porto as I have visited a lot of churches during my visit there. There is a charge of 6 Euros as entrance fee. No photography is allowed!

We especially liked The Tre of Life and The Moroccan Martyrs. They seem so lifelike and are very unusual and so not to be missed.

The interior was a museum of sorts, and it was very enjoyable to explore. We went down to the crypt, and it was interesting to see the names/places of people buried there. There was also a plexiglass panel where you could view an assortment of human bones. The E6 cost was slightly overpriced, and it probably should have been half as much. Nevertheless, it is worth about an hour of your time in Porto, so think of the cost as a contribution to maintain the Church for future visitors.
