First impressions were excellent. Very imposing entrance with loads of period features and huge sweeping staircases. We thought we were in the wrong place as it's only rated 2 stars.!!!!
The rooms were pretty basic however with very small showers but perfectly adequate. Breakfast was OK with quite a varied selection - a few tables outside in the small garden proved popular.
Location was brilliant - only a few steps from Av Dos Aliados where the hop-on hop-off buses pick up......well worth doing and a stop-off at the waterfront is highly recommended..
We arrived the night of the football final and Porto won so the whole place was a bit mental with the noise going on until the wee small hours!!!! It was a repeat performance the next night cos the team arrived in the square on an open-top bus and it seemed the whole populaton of Porto was out to meet their heroes.......they certainly know how to party.
If you are a light sleeper you might consider earplugs - Porto seems to have an awful lot of bells that chime every 15 minutes!
Must recommend the restaurant where we ended up eating most nights - it's called First Floor and it's 42-54 Av.Dos Aliados......very glam, good food and wine and very reasonably priced. We loved it......

Wonderful hotel - had third floor room which was very clean, very comfy and v good value at £155 for 3 nights. And a fabulous space - so much niocer than usual look alike new hotels. Great location too - everywhere walkable (Porto is quite small). Down side was we got a twin room on first night instead of double but they gave us a (slightly smaller) double after some moaning the following morning (saying that "agency" bookings aren't guaranteed twin or double - worth watching out for). Breakfast fabulos. ASnd there's a garden to chill in. Only downside - three streets up is one of the streets where people are out very late enjoying life at night so it can eb a bit noisy with late night revellers - fine if you are OK with windows closed or have enough wine that it fdoesn't matter. Abd east to get to from airport - metro for 2 euros to Trindade with no changes then 10 minute (max) walk

Only a one-night stay. Our young front desk man (Pedro) was wonderful. His boss on duty in the morning when we had to check out. He was rude and dismissive. They had technical problems with their Visa machine, so we had to empty our cash to pay the bill, then run to a bank (with charges) to get cash for our train. The guy made us feel like it was all out problem, not even an apology.

Room Tip: Stay elsewhere

We stayed here over Easter week for two nights. First the good. The hotel is very centrally located and you are just a few minutes walk from pretty much anything and everything, including the metro stop. The staff was polite and helpful and the common areas (reception, breakfast hall, etc) are all very atmospheric and grand. The breakfast is also very good.

Now the bad stuff. Our room was on the ground floor, overlooking the street. We had a lot of noise from the street during the day (scooters, people, cars) and noise from everyone else staying in the hotel who had to get past our door and up the creaking staircase. However, our main issue was the damp smell that seemed to be everywhere in our room. The furniture is quite dated (and not in a particularly good way) and the walls and doors could really do with some fresh paint. Unfortunately the hotel was full and there was no other room for us, so we had to endure it for our two nights there.

So, I don't know if the other rooms are any better but ours was certainly not one we'd be staying again, the damp smell was really unpleasant, particularly for anyone with asthma or other breathing conditions. Unless you have seen the other rooms and know they are better/quieter/not damp, I'd be careful about staying here. It is all very well having a nice breakfast and beautiful staircases to admire, but if the room smells of damp and is noisy, it is not fun.

Kind and helpful staff appologised that a guest had overstayed due to work circumstances. They kindly paid for a taxi to Hotel Malaposta which did not have the charm or historic atmosphere for which we had specifically booked Grande Hotel de Paris.

Room Tip: Ring to make sure room booked is still available
