“Extraordinary Value in a Great Location in a Terrific City”
Reviewed 8 June 2011

This hotel came highly recommended in all the guidebooks and I was not disappointed. The room was a little small, but who spends time in a lovely city like Porto in their hotel room? Service was unfailingly helpful, courteous and friendly. The hotel itself was quite lovely, well-maintained with a sumptuous breakfast, a beautiful garden in which to enjoy it and all for only €59/night!

My friend and I stayed here for four night. I chose the hotel because of its central location, reasonable reviews and remarkably good price of 50 euros per night that included breakfast and I was not disappointed. The hotel is well over 100 years old and has obviously seen better days. The carpets need replacing in some of the public areas and the bedrooms are basic but acceptable, with reasonable space. The beds were comfortable enough but if you don't like noise ask for one at the back. You will still have the bells of Los Clerigos chiming every 15 minutes but if you take earplugs they won't keep you awake. The hotel garden was a great place to take your drink in the evening and relax. The reception staff operate as bar staff as and when required and the two young men who were around most of the time were absolutely charming. The breakfast buffet is excellent. I found the hotel easy to locate - you just have to look properly on the map and make sure you don't miss the rather discreet sign above the entrance. The location is brilliant as it is only a few minutes walk to Sao Bento station and a few minutes further away from the cathedral. There are plenty of restaurants and cafes nearby. Porto itself is lovely, if extremely steep in places, with the Ribeiro area which runs down to the waterfront being the unspoilt old part of the town. A trip to one of the port cellars is a must. Don't miss San Francisco church for the unbelievable gold decorated wood carvings and the Bolsa palace for the fantastic arab room. There are some great day trips to be had to places such as Braga and Regua, the latter being reachable by boat or train. Train fares are very cheap. This is a super place for a long weekend break as you can see most things in 3 days, and this hotel offers excellent value for money.

Room Tip: Make sure that you check if breakfast is included

This hotel only increased our dislike of Portugal. The hotel makes no attempt to assist the client, either before or during their stay regarding the difficulty in locating this hotel. The streets were recently changed. We wasted almost an hour upon arrival, as well as an hour after retrieving our car from the garage upon departure (only a few blocks away) trying to find it. The street is not properly marked so you can only see it if you actually got out of your car to search for it. Why they can't tell their clients to turn at the InterContinental Hotel is beyong me. They are totally irresponsible hosts. Cetainly, the interior of the hotel is charmingly old fashioned, but the room was basic and the bed was so hard you might as well be sleeping on the floor. We lost one night's payment because we left the next day instead of the following day and spent an additonal $150 for a hotel at our next destination because this experience was so bad. I do not recommend this hotel. Their breakfast was abundant and pretty good and the room was very clean. And Porto as a Unesco World Heritage sight is a joke. By the way, I have travelled Europe extensively and all I usually require is an immaculate room.

First impressions were excellent. Very imposing entrance with loads of period features and huge sweeping staircases. We thought we were in the wrong place as it's only rated 2 stars.!!!!
The rooms were pretty basic however with very small showers but perfectly adequate. Breakfast was OK with quite a varied selection - a few tables outside in the small garden proved popular.
Location was brilliant - only a few steps from Av Dos Aliados where the hop-on hop-off buses pick up......well worth doing and a stop-off at the waterfront is highly recommended..
We arrived the night of the football final and Porto won so the whole place was a bit mental with the noise going on until the wee small hours!!!! It was a repeat performance the next night cos the team arrived in the square on an open-top bus and it seemed the whole populaton of Porto was out to meet their heroes.......they certainly know how to party.
If you are a light sleeper you might consider earplugs - Porto seems to have an awful lot of bells that chime every 15 minutes!
Must recommend the restaurant where we ended up eating most nights - it's called First Floor and it's 42-54 Av.Dos Aliados......very glam, good food and wine and very reasonably priced. We loved it......

Wonderful hotel - had third floor room which was very clean, very comfy and v good value at £155 for 3 nights. And a fabulous space - so much niocer than usual look alike new hotels. Great location too - everywhere walkable (Porto is quite small). Down side was we got a twin room on first night instead of double but they gave us a (slightly smaller) double after some moaning the following morning (saying that "agency" bookings aren't guaranteed twin or double - worth watching out for). Breakfast fabulos. ASnd there's a garden to chill in. Only downside - three streets up is one of the streets where people are out very late enjoying life at night so it can eb a bit noisy with late night revellers - fine if you are OK with windows closed or have enough wine that it fdoesn't matter. Abd east to get to from airport - metro for 2 euros to Trindade with no changes then 10 minute (max) walk
