4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 March 2009

I love this place. This was the second time I've stayed here (first time in 2004) and it's still great. The hotel is a Victorian era building in central Porto, right off the main square and is located about 5 minutes from the Termine metro and about 10 min walk to the river. Be under no illusions - this is a basic hotel. The rooms are clean but very stripped back, double / twin beds, a little table, a tv and a bathroom but that's pretty much it but if you don't mind that then you'll love it.

The hotel is CHEAP, especially if you share rooms but it's decent and has great staff who are really helpful. Above all that, it's really charming, lots of bizarre antiques strewn about all over the place (sewing machines, gramophones etc). There is an OK breakfast buffet in a very old fashioned dining room.

Due to its price for triple rooms the hotel does attract some hen and stag dos but they don;t tend to be too raucous.

Booked the Grande Hotel de Paris following both TripAdvisor and Rough Guide recommendations. Booked over the internet - was easy and straightforward. Showed up at the hotel only to find that the hotel was actually closed (although - fortunately, attended) and that they had booked a room at the Best Western down the street. I am incensed that they didn't have the good graces to give me a choice between canceling (I wouldn't even have wanted my 1.5 euro deposit back) or staying at the hotel (definitely not up there in ambiance) that they chose for me. Certainly would have been easier just to let me know where they had rebooked me - given that the Grande Hotel de Paris is on a very hard to get to one way street.

I imagine that this hotel will not be open until summer. However, their website IS STILL TAKING RESERVATIONS. I have a sneaking suspicion they own this other hotel and are just using the GHP to fill this other place. Caveat emptor.

This hotel is centrally located and easy to find if you take the tube from the airport to Bolhao station. The receptionist was very helpful and efficient upon checking in. The restaurants and bars that she recommended were superb.

The rooms are slightly on the small side, but if you only want a place to sleep, then it is ideal. The bathrooms are of average size and there was plenty of hot water.

The breakfast was in a large dining room, with plenty to choose from. If you're looking for a full english breakfast, this is not the place for you, the breakfast was mainly continental.

The hotel is the oldest in Porto and is on the main shopping street. This is busy during the day, but very quiet at night. It is also near the Majestic cafe, which is "the cafe" in Porto to have a coffee at.

The hotel is not like your modern day hotels, it has got plenty of character and the staff were very helpful. There is a lounge area and a bar area to relax in.

  • Liked — The character of the hotel
  • Disliked — The rooms were very hot

I rated the hotel as "Above average" but I believe that if I had stayed there during the Summer months, It would have given it only "Okay, but some problems". I decided to write about them anyway.
The interior of the hotel is very beautiful – the furniture and all the items. The room was very spacious and the location is the best that can be in Porto – near Sao Bento rail station, the tourist information, the metro and many monuments. It's easy to walk down to the Ribera – water front & on the way to visit "placio da Bolsa" and S. Francisco Church. One can get back up by Guindais funicular.
The reception staff were very helpful and polite. The breakfast more than o.k for a two star hotel.
Now I will write about the problems I found with the hotel.
1. The light in the room is very dim – impossible to read – only in the bathroom.
2.There is no air-condition so I wouldn't stay at this hotel during summer months as my room had only a door out to a balcony – if kept open –A) I could hear pigeons and seagulls(my stay was in October so it was o.k.). I advise to ask if the window/door of the room can be opened. (If it is important to you).
B) The room then couldn't be darkened.

3.For smokers - It is forbidden to smoke in the hotel – only in the lovely garden.
4. There is no hair- dryer so be sure to bring one.
5. The television was high up in the corner above the table so one can watch it only from the beds.

So I conclude – A nice hotel with character but some problems especially for a summer stay.

  • Disliked — Lack of air-condition

Grande Hotel de Paris in Oporto offers great value vs. money. The furnitures has not been updated for ages, but the hotel is spotless, comfortable and very charming. The location is fairly good, given that Oporto is not the largest city, everywhere of importance are richable by foot. The best feature of this hotel is the breakfast. It is a very pleasing buffét wich makes the whole stay very worth while.

  • Liked — Great value and perfect breakfast
  • Disliked — A tiny to slow pressure in shower facilities

This is a quaint little hotel - you can imagine what it would have been like in it's heyday. It is a little 'worn' and rough around the edges now - but it is good value for money and a charming place to stay.

On our arrival, we were warmly welcomed by the guy at the front desk, who was lovely. He gave us a map and circled key places of interest, and recommendations of where to go, and how to get there. He then also escorted us up to our room, and was only too willing to help or answer any questions we had.

The room was fine - quite small, but clean and tidy.

Breakfast was held in a lovely 'morning room' that led onto the garden. Unfortunately, we noticed a lot of flies circling the room and on top of some of the food (which was not all covered) which was a bit revolting.

The garden that leads off this room is lovely - a real oasis in the middle of Porto!

The hotel is in a good location - close to trains, and a short walk down to the waterfront.

"The hotel was really interesting with lots of olde worlde charm. Bedrooms were comfortable and location for the old city was excellent. It was ideally located for the train from the airport at Euro 1.90 each way and just 200 yards from Alliados and San Bento train station. Whilst the hotel was very acceptable and the breakfast particularly good (get there before 9.30am though) it was disappointing that we didnt have any hot water for 3 of our 5 days. The hotel didnt seem majorly concerned about this and reception dont give you any feedback about what is happening and dont respond to you as a customer unless you get quite cross with them. Unfortunately having been promised hot water on our last day before leaving, this didnt happen and when explaining to a very umptious night receptionist in the morning when we left, he was very rude and said 'lady you have to respect me' after he was really bolshy and rude. I was also disappointed having explained our problems over the 5 days with the water that they still charged us euro 7.50 for our safety deposit box when as a gesture of goodwill perhaps this could have been waived. All I would say is if you have this problem - report it asap and keep at them else they dont bother!! I would have given above average score had this not been such a problem, and would still recommend a stay there. The hotel was not as well situated however for the Riviera area where all the evening atmosphere was, but, it was about 15-20 minute pretty downhill walk and Euro 3.50 for a taxi back up to the old town - very reasonable and well worth the walk and expense as the food is very good altho much the same in each restaurant along the river. "
Top Tip:
"The buses for all areas of the city are very close at hand including several open top tour buses at Euro 10 per 24 hours. We found these particularly useful to get to all locations and the stunning beaches further away from Porto itself and well worth the visit and can also be used by some of the public transport buses too which is helpful. Try and go a bit beyond the initial restaurants on the river as there are some more traditional restaurants which are more reasonable and better value for money. The coffee and cakes in Porto are wonderul - and very reasonable - 2 large lattes and gorgeous cakes for Euro 3 all in!! TOP TIP - the gardens and contemporary art gallery are closed on a Monday (or were when we went in July).
The cafes and restaurants in the old town close at about 10.30pm and are a bit more expensive than down by the river where there is more competition. Definately visit the Cafe Majestic in the old town which is really nice and not as expensive as you might think."
