“Old World Charm - Fantastic Value for Money”
Reviewed 3 November 2010

Perfect location just off the main square, walking distance from main-line station and Metros. A little faded but that's all part of the charm. Lots of interesting furniture and bric a brac around and lovely breakfast room leading out into the garden.
Rooms a little basic but everything you want and certainly fine for the price. Staff were helpful and friendly. Breakfast was amazing. HUGE choice (including bacon and egg if you like that) and all pretty delicious.
Why would you stay anywhere else in Porto?

First trip to Porto

Location: 2 star hotel located off the main Plaza in Porto - short walk from Metro which there is easy link to Airport metro terminal (25 min trip cost approx 2 / 3 euros)
All main attractions within walking distance ( 10 /15 minutes walk to Riverfront where there are many restaurants /cafes) One of 5/6 bridges can take you from one side of river to the other where there are modern restaurants and Port /wine cellars/ tours

Good value excursions offered through the old trams / open top bus tours and the metro - can take in the start of the sea coast from the City

The city is a mixture of contrasts between well preserved historical churches / museums / buildings etc through to modern architecture and more delapidated houses and buildings - many points of interest can be explored through the windy narrow streets - safe during the day but can appear to be somewhat 'seedy' in the dark

Hotel - is excellent value for money We paid 200 euros for 4 nights including a very extensive and good quality buffet breakfast and taxes! The hotel is somewhat quirky 1930's French style and in places it does look a little tired but overall clean particularly bedroom and ensuite which was spotless We asked for quiet room (given 312 ) on the top (3rd) floor at the back of the hotel - interesting views across the city Most if not all the rooms at the rear of the hotel are apparently twin bedded rather than double

The hotel also has a small but pleasant garden adjoining the breakfast room

Staff were very helpful any enquiry / query was dealt with in a friendly and professional way

located above the old heart of porto the grande hotel de paris is a perfect base for exploring porto. nostalgic atmosphere is still alive even though renovation has cleaned up a little. the staff is polite, could propably be a bit more friendly though. breakfast only starting at eight and the black-hot-liquid having nothing to do with coffee makes it even more considerable to take a snack somewhere else around the corner. having a room on the streetside the soundtrack of student-nightlife will sometimes continue into morning hours. the better choice would be to indulge ypurself in the vivid barscene of the neighbourhood! overall it is a comfortable place to stay, spots of cultural and historical interest in all walking directions.

Booked on basis of tripadvisor reviews and was very pleased. The price for a pair of joined rooms was very keen, especially as it included the excellent buffet breakfast. Decor and style has been commented on extensively in other reviews and is truly charming and even after 3 days, never failed to entertain and amuse. The most memorable feature for us was the beautiful chime of the nearby church clock- so melodic that we wanted to record it for use as a ringtone. However, every 15 minutes, all night was a little intrusive on sleep.

Recommended- will return as soon as Ryanair resumes its excellent value Birmingham-Porto service.

Very nice hotel in Porto; great furniture and antiques around the place and the breakfast is great, especially if you can get a seat in the garden. The only drwback with the hotel is the lack of air conditionining - a major problem when it is 30 degrees outside; I'd hate to think how unbearable it would be in July. Be warned Porto is very hilly but we bought a Porto Card that gave us access to all trams, buses and funiculars so it was easy to hop on a bus or tram rathar than hiking up the hills. There are some great bars and restaurants in the Ribera area overlooking the water - be warned when all those nice plates of ham, pate and cheeses are placed on your table - they can actually cost more than the meal; so say no thanks if you don't want them. Visit the wine cellars across the river for a history of the port industry and some samples. Take a boat tour on the river and view the wonderful bridges going across the gorge - great scenery

I agree with the posters - this hotel is a charm and it begins the moment you enter. Staff are welcoming, the rooms and common areas have tons of character. Very clean, kind of dated in a quirky way. Paid 78 euro for a triple room with balcony - with a nice view and over the top breakfast. Good workout as Porto has more hills than Lisbon, location close to bars, just around the corner. There was a great spot for fish at the top of the street, a real local place with great prices to match.

If you are looking for a complete andidote to chain hotels this is it.The Grand Hotel de Paris is decorated with antiques and furniture which give it a the exceptional character of a hotel from a previous era.
The rooms are clean and comfortable and the breakfast which can be eaten in the garden is exceptional for a hotel in this price range.
The hotel is close to many of the highlights of Oporto yet in a quiet side street.
The staff are courteous and friendly .Compared with larger hotels nearby this must represent excellent value.
I will definetly return when I next visit Portugal
