“Lots of street noise, otherwise okay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 April 2013

Breakfast is spartan, but that is common for Portugal. Lots of street noise, and the double wooden shutters don't really help. Hotel is old and appears a little run-down, but everything is neat and tidy.

There is a fridge at the reception, but it was broken for most of my stay. However, there is a nice restaurant below the hotel itself which is open til late, and if you're lucky you can even catch a fado show while having your meal. Recommended.

Room Tip: Try getting a room facing away from the street.

We had room #306, on the very corner of the building, with a small balcony overlooking Aliados square, which is the commercial heart of Porto and very attractive in a 19th C., Heavy, Neo-Classical kind of way; a broad, long square, lined with trees, massive Neo-classical buildings, etc. We enjoyed our room and our stay, and felt very grateful to be so central, within easy walking distance of everything we wanted to see.

We never travel without our supplies of silicone putty earplugs, and they were never more valuable to us than here. The traffic noise is considerable. Our earplugs blocked this out just fine; but I can imagine people without earplugs feeling bitter about losing sleep in this same room that we ourselves thoroughly enjoyed.

Continental Breakfast here is so so: good breads, of course -- no one makes better bread than the Portuguese -- and some pastries, too; a bowl of fruit; but the cereals are poor (just corn flakes and some choco horror), and the juice is the very poorest, thinnest quality stuff made from powders. Thoroughly Ho Hum.

People on the desk are very very helpful and nice.

I was already in Portugal, about to leave to Porto, and at the last minute decided for the hotel. Couldn't have done better. Aliados is close to everything, and in front of a square which had a very nice Christmas decoration. The windows are charming, the bathroom is practical [and I loved that I could hear the news during my shower], the beds very confortable, and the breakfast a wonderful surprise - varied and good. Funny that the entrance is not aligned with what the hotel offers. And at the first day, the employee who showed my room was very nice, presenting the rest of the hotel. My only "but" is that my room never got cozy, because the heater was not able to warm it up. Even for the leaving room of the hotel, which was very beautiful, where the computer was, we did not stay for long, due to the coldness.
In the overall, except for the heating system, which can be fixed easily, the hotel is very nice, and for sure I would recommend it.

Room Tip: The rooms facing the main square. Even facing the main street it is quite enough for a good night of...

We stayed one night and very impressed with the location, the nearby restaurant on ground floor, wonderful staff. The room looked out on the square, just as requested. The double set of windows filtered any possible noise (there was no noise) and the bathroom shower was wonderful. We have paid twice as much in Paris and not even come close to the spacious room, bathroom and amenities offered by Hotel Aliados. We would stay here again. Unfortunately because our flight was so early in the morning we missed breakfast, but the restuarnt - Cafe Guarany we had our dinner the night before. Great food, great service - the best octopus we ever ate in Portugal (we love our octopus). Hotel staff arranged for our taxi in the morning that arrived in seconds and was very reasonable in price. When we come again hopefully will take advantage of the nearby metro station just that our flights did not make it possible.

Room Tip: Make sure you go to the Cafe Guarany worth every penny.

Located in the centre of old Porto's heritage area and just a short walk from the river and the port wine lodges. Very helpful and friendly staff and a good buffet breakfast. Rooms are a little on the small side, but well appointed. The associated restuarant on the ground floor is well worth a visit.

Room Tip: Traffic on the main road is heavy and constant, try and get a room that is not at the front.

I stayed here for four nights. The location is excellent. Metro, local and tour busses right outside the front door. Easy to get to from the airport and most of the attractions within a few minutes' walk. The staff are friendly and helpful. The rooms are adequate and very comfortable and clean. Breakfast is ok but complimentary tea or coffee making facilities in the room would make this an excellent experience. So would a fridge. Overall good value for money. I enjoyed my stay.
