“OK Hotel, quite central and clean.”
Reviewed 6 January 2013

The location is walking distance from the "main street" of Porto however not that close to the more attractive area of the city, (near the Douro). Room was clean and the bed ok, the staff was friendly and responded to our necessities as in any good hotel. The breakfast is acceptable, not a smorgasbord but for our rate we found it to be ok. In all, no major surprises, no major disapointment. If you want a hotel which offers room and bfast this is a good choice, if you wish for more this will not do it (however acceptable and clean the place is).

I really enjoyed my stay in Hotel America. I felt like i was at home.
The living room is very pleasant and the breakfast very complete for a 3 stars hotel!
Wi-fi conection is not available in all rooms, but if you need it, the working team do everything they can to fill your requirements!
Reception works 24 hours!
Nearby we have restaurants, bus stop and metro station.

The staff were very friendly & welcoming given our late arrival. May be that is what affected by sleepquality. The room was a funny set up, four single beds, yes four in a row. The room was out the back of the breakfast area, thorugh a few doors and then upsome stairs, strange but I suppose added to the experience. Breakfast was good but we were misinformed as to start and end times, so we had a wait of half an hour but the morning staff did their best & felt sorry more for them than us. As to location, we goot in late and left without seeingmuch other than a few girls working the streets, may be a sign of the times in Portugal unfortunately. Overall, I would recommend the hotel and give it 3 out of 5 with some room for improvement.

This small hotel is nice but I was a little bit confused from the cleaning in our room. Other stuff was very helpful but I was really unhappy when I asked a few times for better cleaning and it was not happenening. Next day was our room also -average-clean!

Hotel America is a fairly small hotel, with a rather unassuming frontage. It is the sort of hotel that I really should not like at all! The reception area was rather small and cramped and not very appealing. The lift was very slow and ponderous. Everything in the hotel looked rather dated and an upgrade to the equipment and facilities would not come amiss. The bedroom was again rather small, although they had managed to fit in a full bathroom suite - and the shower was superb. The wardrobe (the only hanging and storage space) was an absolute joke, being cut down to fit around a projecting wall. There was no safety deposit box in the bedroom, nor safe in reception - although reception said that they had never had any problems with theft.

However, it is rather a pleasant place to stay in many ways. The staff are very friendly and nothing seems too much trouble for them. When I booked in, the receptionist apologised for overcharging me by 3 euros on my pre-paid booking (it was so cheap, I would never have noticed if she had not pointed it out) and she insisted on giving me the 3 euros back. She then invited me to come to the hotel bar for a glass of port - very civilised. Breakfast was on a par with really expensive hotels. There was a huge spread and you could pick from hot food, cold meats and cheeses, cereals, breads, croissants, about 6 different jams (tubs and jars), delicious cakes and pastries, fresh fruit, tinned fruit, fruit juices, tea, coffee, water. The cakes and pastries were different each day and some of them (e.g. a magnificent chocolate cake) would probably have cost you 5 or 6 euros per portion in a café. So breakfast was excellent. If you asked the staff anything, they would give you very good suggestions for restaurants and where the best fado was etc. As for location, it is pretty central and only a few minutes walk down to the main shopping area and sights. So, it turned out to be a pretty good place to be and quite restful.

Good price, clean rooms. Free parking, but the rooms, at least our room 206, was very noisy. No window and very small.

My room was up front near reception, so thin walls, tile floors and walls, and people - ringing phones - TV, etc made for a noisy stay. Not very kind or helpful at the front desk reception area, either. Breakfast was above average, rate was good, parking was tricky.

Room Tip: Ask for one away from reception area.
