“good hotel”

Good place to stay, nice staff, clean and confortable hotel.

Its a good play to have the car. It doesnt take really much to get the centre of the town and you can easily go by tram. Its great to visit that lovely city and to spend time of rest in that hotel. Its a verry good choice.

Stayed one night at this Ibis ahead of an early morning flight to the UK. I have stayed at a number of Ibis hotels before and this was by far the most modern and the best. It was more like a regular hotel but on a budget. We paid £28.00 for the night. Booked online. The hotel is next to a large hospital in Oporto, above a small shopping mall and has secure parking included in the price. The room was very clean and well appointed. The bed was very comfortable. Good air conditioning. The hotel has a 24 hour bar service, which we did not use. There are a number of fast food restaurants in the shopping mall which is connected to the hotel by a walkway. There is a large supermarket if you want to get something to eat in your room. I asked for a wake-up call which came bang on time. The staff were pleasant and helpful and spoke good English. I would definitely stay at this Ibis again. The only downside was the signage to the hotel was not great, but with a GPS you will find it with ease. The hotel is well placed to get to the airport while avdoiding those absurd electronic tolls for which you cant pay but then risk a fine. However the route to the airport via the service roads is fiendishly complicated and I would not recommend it without a GPS to assist!

Stayed ten nights and found the hotel offered pretty much everything we needed. The room was a pretty standard Ibis room, but was clean and bright with a big bathroom. There was very little noise from other rooms, which can sometimes be a problem in hotels, and we slept pretty well while staying here. One slight quibble is that towards the end of our stay the air conditioning unit began to drip, but as we had been running it a lot, perhaps that wasn't too surprising. Apart from this we had no problems. The parking can be a little tricky to find the first time you use it, but this is more than made up for by the hotel's handy location, right next to a metro stop and above a small shopping centre. It was extremely handy to be able to go down to the supermarket (open till 10pm) when we needed supplies, and we also made good use of the restaurants in the food court, which were much nicer than the sort of restaurants you usually find in UK shopping centres. Although we didn't try the hotel's own restaurant it looked nice enough, and the staff at the bar and Reception were friendly. Overall, the hotel is bright, cheerful and friendly, and we would not hesitate to stay there again!

Convenient metro-light rail into Porto and on to Vila Nova de Gaia; free parking on property; free use of WiFi and of hotel computer in lobby; shopping center with supermarket below hotel; close to Auto-Estrada Porto-Valenca and Estrada da Circunvalacao.

Reception staff spoke English and varied in conduct from reluctant to pleasant. depending on the individual you dealt with at the time. Alas, the person with whom we checked in was of a contrary nature and not quite suited to the hospitality industry; however, we managed to make arrangements as the two of us needed.

Rooms at the front of the hotel face the parking area on the roof of the shopping center below, overlook sports fields, and have a view of buildings in the distance. Rooms at the back look across at trees and some parking. The surrounding areas are very quiet outside business hours when medical facilities are not fully operating or perhaps closed.

The carpeted room was fairly standard Ibis with built-in, light-colored furniture, a platform bed with a firm, but comfortable, mattress, and a real bathroom (not a cabin-like prefabrication in the corner) having a full bath-shower and the usual liquid soap dispensers at the washbasin and bath. The hot water system worked well though the pressure at the washbasin was a bit low (but not a problem). The air conditioner worked well.

The TV was of the old cathode ray tube type with a remote control giving access to about 20 channels in Portuguese, English, Spanish, French, German and Italian (one each of the last few).

The window was double-glazed with good soundproofing from outside; however, from the corridor one could still hear doors being closed, voices and other sounds of activity. Soundproofing between rooms was reasonable.

WiFi is free in the lobby (with log on details obtained from reception) as is use of the hotel guest computer; otherwise, WiFi use in rooms is E3 per hour. Free WiFi is also available in the food court of the shopping center below the hotel building.

A distinct peculiarity of the hotel was its isolated position on the top of a shopping center, access to its parking and entrance, the system of one-way streets surrounding it, access to the lobby by foot, and its being surrounded by medical facilities of all types — including Sao Joao hospital and various university clinics.

The hotel building sits like a castle keep in the center and set back from the modest, two-story, "Campus S. Joao" shopping center. The center has various shops on the ground floor, including a Froiz supermarket (open 9 a.m. till 10 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 10 a.m. till 10 p.m. on Sunday), and an extensive food court on the upper level (which seems very quiet at the end of the business day and tends to reduce activity as the night progresses).

By foot from the shopping center, you can access the entrance level and the lobby of the hotel via a poorly indicated, lift-elevator tucked in an unobtrusive, ground-floor alcove (which you need to look for). Alternatively (particularly when the shopping center is completely closed from 10 p.m. and you cannot use the lift-elevator), walk around the corner into the side street Rua do Dr. Placido da Costa. To your left a short distance up you will see a car ramp with a barrier and, to the right, a small guardhouse with, perhaps, a parking custodian. Walk up the footpath-sidewalk at the left. At the top, turn around 180 degrees and follow the drive to the open parking area at the front of the hotel.

Much, if not most, of the public street parking around the hotel costs during certain hours because the area has a concentration of medical and academic facilities, including a major hospital and clinics.

An major advantage of the hotel involves leaving a car there and taking the D metro-light rail into central Porto in 15-20 minutes, depending on where you get off, and on to Vila Nova de Gaia (via Gustav Eiffel's Ponte Dom Luis I — take a walk across the upper span for magnificent views) if you want to continue on. The service runs every 10-15 minutes.

If the food court is closed and you do not want to eat at the hotel, there are four restaurants across the street Estrada da Circunvalacao from the next, and last, stop (Hospital de Sao Joao) of the D metro-light rail line which passes the hotel. They are a 5–10 minute walk up Rua Antonio Bernadino Almeida from the hotel; just follow the rails. Three of the restaurants face an open plaza with low-rise apartment buildings on three sides. The most obvious of the four is "Tropical Burguer" (part of a chain and open 7 a.m. till 1 a.m.) directly across the street from the metro stop.

We dined there late one night and found the food and service quite satisfactory. The selection was good, with a varied choice beyond the usual hamburgers, and at very reasonable prices. It has waiter service and you can sit outside on the terrace at no extra charge. It was popular and full of locals when we went.

The hotel is a block away from Estrada da Circunvalacao N 12 and close to Auto-Estrada Porto-Valenca A 3, IP 1, E 1 tollway access, and the inner ring road Via de Cintura Interna A 20, IC 23.

Getting to the hotel by car from Rua Antonio Bernadino Almeida involves following signs to the hotel and driving along a series of one-way streets. Even though the hotel is on the corner of Rua Antonio Bernadino Almeida and Rua do Dr. Placido da Costa, and you can see it towering above, the access road Rua do Dr. Placido da Costa is one way in the opposite direction to which you will want to go; hence, the need to continue down Rua Antonio Bernadino Almeida past the hotel.

Take the first street to your left where you will see a small blue sign with IBIS on it. You will have three more left turns to make before getting on Rua do Dr. Placido da Costa and finding the entrance ramp to the hotel parking. Each left turn is indicated by a small blue sign with IBIS on it. Upon your arrival at the hotel you will have made a 360 degree circuit.

The access ramp to the hotel parking is off a parallel service lane at the right of Rua do Dr. Placido da Costa and to the right of the entrance to a parking station with the sign BEM VINDO A BRAGAPARQUES. The ramp has a barrier and, to the right, a small guardhouse with, perhaps, a parking custodian. Drive up and tell him that you are going to the hotel Ibis and he will let you through.

At the top of the ramp, continue and make a U turn at a roundabout. Proceed and stop at another barrier. To the driver's left will be an intercom. Press the button and staff will open the barrier. Go in, turn right and park in one of the empty bays.

Note that hotel parking access is limited to 7:00 or 7:30 a.m. (signs differ) till midnight when either the custodian leaves or someone closes the barrier which he left open when he finished for the day. You can drive out at any time. If you arrive by car outside the opening hours, you can park in the street or at BEM VINDO A BRAGAPARQUES (a pay parking station to the left of the ramp up to the hotel) which the hotel recommends and with which it has an arrangement.

Room Tip: Try for a top floor room, away from the lift-elevator and facing the back.

It's always good, and you get what you pay for. Close to a metro station, supermarket, and a hospital if you need one.
Quiet and clean rooms with a good breakfast.

It is a nice cosy hotel, quite and clean for a reasonable price. It is located very near to the metro station and it takes 20 minutes by metro to reach the central station. A set of fast-food restaurants, supermarket and many other services are located just below the hotel.
