“Lovely little hotel. Great value!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 November 2012

The Pensao Cristal is a lovely little family run hotel, right in the heart of Porto, near to Sao Bento train station and all the major tourist spots.

The rooms are clean and functional and the hotel serves a pleasant breakfast from 8am.

Ana, the hotel owner is a really lovely and kind woman, who is always cheerful and happy to help. She made our stay very comfortable and enjoyable.

The only real downside to the hotel is that it can be noisy after dark, due to being surrounded by lots of bars and clubs. However, it is a really safe, happy and welcoming place to stay and is really great value for the price.

Thank you Ana!

First, as the other reviews have mentioned, the restaurant/bar downstairs is very noisy until as late as 4:30 to 5:00 in the morning. Also, the rooms are tiny. They make similarly priced Tokyo hotel rooms seem large by comparison. The staff, however, is friendly and helpful enough, and the location is good for seeing the various parts of town. For the price it is a good place to stay - nice restaurants near by - but you need to be able sleep through the noise and deal with the size of the rooms.

Location : very central, ideal to discover several neighborhoods walking (5 min from the Sao Bento station, train - metro ).
Room : Relatively small (for our at least) but functional (AC) and clean.
Staff : Pleasant, multilingual and very nice owner.
Price : Low for the season (July) and includes breakfast as well as wireless internet (not always great in the rooms).

Favorite: Complete (and varied) breakfast as well as the service.

Inconvenience: THE NOISE AT NIGHT. I hate to say it because I feel this does not do justice to the work the employees and the devoted owners but the central location of the pension is a benefit as well as a negative point : the sound of the bars in the street (just below the hotel) is audible in the rooms all night. Earplugs are ESSENTIAL , especially Fridays and Saturdays.

the hotel is situated above a winebar, and they had extremely load music every (weekend) night. We did not sleep at all during the two nights. The hotel management did not help at all. They blamed the neighbour and told us to complain in the bar next door. Rooms and breakfast were poor to average. Apart from the location, I would not recommend this hotel to anyone!!! Absolute no value for money.

What a charming place. Loved my room. It was fairly spacious, as was the bathroom, and the decor was lovely. The staff were very helpful. The only criticism I have is regarding the fact that each time you leave the hotel you must leave your room key at the reception desk and then collect it again when you return. Because of this I felt a little as though my comings and goings were being monitered which was rather annoying.. but I am sure there was a valid reason for this regardless. All in all, I highly recommend this place.

My husband and I traveled by plane up to Porto, car rental was already arranged before hand. Rent a car agent fetched us up and so was given a car, we have to travel up to Galicia and back to Porto. On our 8 day trip from Porto-Galicia-Porto this was the first stop.

Overnight stay in this B&B was a nice choice. It is close to the famous landmark Torre de los Cleriegos so no reason to be lost. The desk officer was very helpful giving tips on which place we will dinner yet i insisted it should be by the river Douro.

The room is small and fresh and clean sheets are provided. Elevator gave us easy access to go up and down. I love this place, though breakfast if simple.
