Set in a poorer area 5 mins out of the centre this hotel was extremely good.
Lots of Porto is poor and falling down especially just out of the centre but that can add to its character. Next door can be a mansion - thats the charm of Porto.
The hotel is close to 2 metro stations 1 up a hill 1 down! and when you enter its like being in a different world. The attention to detail especially cleanliness and decorative order is immediately noticed.
We were greated like old friends - big smiles and the feeling that you were No 1. A map was given to us with points of interest , eating places, transport points and walk ways pointed out. Toanyone who has not been to wonderful Porto the staff want to make your stay fruitful in every respect.
The room was impecable a tiny bit small but remember always the price you are paying!
The area is silent next to no traffic so very suitable for light sleepers.
Breakfast was the usual European buffet breakfast - meats, cheeses, breads, cakes, yoghurts, fruit juice, coffee & other drinks such as chocolate etc. Everything presented well especially tea where different types are available and at least 12 speciality teas! - A really nice touch.
Internet available.
I can highly recommend this hotel in every respect at a very good price. Remember it is not a 5star hotel! so dont expect the room bar and swimming pool
Another stay here would be certain

We stayed at the Rio for two nights and the last night of the week in Northern Portugal. The hotel, whilst not in the city centre, is an easy and direct ten minute walk and is on a quiet street, surrounded by local churresquerias and homes. It is centred around a nice courtyard that leads to the cellar where there's the breakfast room and bar with outside access to the lower courtyard. The rooms are in two buildings joined together.

It's a very well kept hotel and, particularly Artur, the owner is lovely to deal with. The room was basic but very clean and secure with a good bathroom and street views. Particularly appreciated the air-conditioning in the lazy September heat.

Breakfast was excellent, best I've had really. Lots of beautiful cheeses, young and fresh or marinated. Meats, a selection of decent cereals, breads, freshly cooked scrambled eggs and sausages. They made every effort to ensure you had what you wanted to eat. I also liked that we could get a fair priced cold beer or a brandy when we returned late at night and to be able to use the internet access.

At the 37 euros we paid per night I thought this was fantastic value for such a warm and comfortable stay. Yes you can get closer to the city centre, but it's noisy there, I liked the pleasant familiarity of the end of the evening walk back to the hotel.

We recently spent one night at the Residencial Grande Rio and at 37 euros per double found it to be good value. This small hotel is a 10 to 15 minute walk to the north of the city centre. It was clean and the staff friendly. The owmer/manageress was obliging and cooked an alternative breakfast for the members of our party with gluten allergies. However if you are arriving by car parking can be a problem, especially late at night. Porto's narrow oneway streets are difficult at times, much easier to take a taxi if you have the option.
