central location, otherwise pretty terrible:
unfriendly staff
horrible plastic cover on mattresses so its like sleeping in a sweaty plastic bag
wifi works for a few minutes then dies on end
no plug sockets in the bedroom! (or only TV socket, which is 3m off the ground).

We loved the location of this hotel--right on liberty square, just down the street from the Intercontinental Hotel. It was easy to find once we got off the metro and had a lot of restaurants nearby to enjoy. We found the staff to be extremely helpful and willing to spend time talking about things to see and places to eat. The rooms are in need of an update, but since we didn't spend a lot of time in the room, it wasn't a big deal. The WIFI worked fine and was free.

Room Tip: We chose a family room with four beds. We got one double and two twins which worked well for us. T...

For the price, you really couldn't ask for a better hotel. It is in an excellent location. We walked down to the water (10-15min) and back to the hotel without any problems, and we saw nearly everything we wanted to see along the way. Parking was two blocks away and cost us 12 euros. The lady at reception was very helpful and spoke perfect English. There was an elevator to the room but you do have to bring your bags up the first flight of stairs. Our room was very quiet despite all the students hanging out outside. Shower was fine with a full-size bathtub (not the tiny cubicle in some hotels). Room was clean but nothing fancy. I'd definitely stay here again.

This hotel is right in the heart of the city, within walking distance to the riverfront. Hop-on, hop-off buses right outside. Good restaurants close by. Liliana, the receptionist, provided a vast amount of info about Porto and also helped plan our trip throughout the rest of Portugal. Her recommendation of Nazare was spot on! The rooms may not be luxurious but Liliana makes up for it. Room was clean, comfortable but lighting could be improved upon.

Yes, Yes.
This hotel does the trick. We spent a couple of nights here and the location is perfect. Right in the heart of this fascinating city. The value was there as the room was clean and compared to nearby places,a good deal. What I really liked about this hotel though, was the staff. Liliana is an absolute jewel and a wealth of knowledge and savvy tips. Amazed a top multi-national company hasn't snapped her up, with her many language skills. Breakfast is simple, but the price is negligible anyway. A good choice of hotel for those not looking for luxury, but looking for a clean, comfortable enough room for sleeps and very good staff, in the heart of it all.

We got off the metro at Aliados to be greeted with one grande street and right in the middle of the grandeur was Hotel Universal. With more expensive hotels like the Intercontinental a stones throw away, I can't believe the great value this hotel offers. It may not be as glitzy as some but we had a lovely stay in a clean, air conditioned and comfortable room (with a surprise balcony, no view but still a bonus for our needs!). The staff were really helpful. i would recommend that for an early morning return flight that you ask staff a couple of days in advance to organise a shuttle bus to the airport. It's 6 euro , collects you at the door and drops you too the airport, saves a lot of hassle and time. I would recommend this hotel to anyone who is looking for simplicity and comfort and wishes to be in the heart of Porto for low low price!

Apart from the steps up to reception we found the hotel to be very clean and comfortable, with very friendly and helpful staff. Rooms were serviced every day, the continental style breakfast was more than adequate. The room was well presented but soundproofing could be a little better. But we will be using this hotel next year when we come back to Porto.
