“Very good choice in Porto.”
Reviewed 20 October 2008

I stayed at this hotel for six nights at the recommendation of a business colleague. There were a series of meetings at this hotel, as well as a large conference at a larger convention hotel about 10 minutes walk away.

This place was an excellent value, compared to the other choices available. The rooms are extremely well kept and had been recently renovated. Facilities overall were very good. As noted in other reviews, the bedding and other furnishing are very comfortable and relatively luxurious for a hotel of this category in Europe.

Hotel is quiet and safe. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. Food service for meetings was above average. The restaurant and bar were average, at best. Breakfast buffet was very good, and the service hours were also very accommodating.

The only complaints were some extra charges - like charges for internet connection and for using the equipment in the very small fitness center. In poking around, I found that other, similar hotels in Porto did not uniformly have these charges. On the other hand, the rate at the BessaHotel was better than most, so it should not be a deterent to staying here. A suggestion to the hotel would be to increase the rate somewhat, but also include the internet connection and use of the fitness room in the base rate rather than as an extra. Travelers like myself would be happier.

This is in a residential area, and the choices for dining are not great. In order to get a variety of options, you need to get away from the hotel. Still, there are a number of good places within easy walking distance.

Overall, I would return for business purposes, and would recommend it for tourists having a reason to visit Porto.

  • Liked — Value of accommodation. Recently renovated and refurnished rooms.
  • Disliked — Location was not optimal. Extra charges were annoying.

We stayed here for one night. The price was excellent, £50 for double room with breakfast plus a cot for our daughter. The room was a good size and the bed was two singles which were very comfortable.
The bathroom was very good and clean with excellent fittings. The bar is lovely and the staff very friendly and helpful, especially the bar man who also tried to entertain our one year old daughter. The same person served us dinner and was very friendly and helpful with the wine and menu.
The rate we got was a late booking rate as the rack rates on their wall is well over €200 which is a bit steep. We caught the tourist bus in and out of town which is only around 10 mins so is not really that far. They also gave us free parking for the night, usually €8 per night.
If back in Porto I would definately stay here again.

The rate was very expensive for the services they offer. It was the same rate of the Sheraton and the Meridien both five stars hotels. When we arrived at the hotel we were informed that they didn´t have people to carry our luggage from our car to our room because the hotel was a 4 star hotel. We were traveling for almost a month and we had to carry everything by ourselves in the midle of the night. We tried to used the business center but it was always full. By the time of the check out we asked at the reception for directions of the roads to go to Madrid and they didn´t even know where spain is, because of it we asked to use the internet and they dennied it because we had already payd the bill so by that time we weren´t guests anymore. ( very rude ) They call thenselves a design hotel but they are nothing more then a common comercial hotel.

A very good hotel next to the Bessa Stadium home of Boavista FC. The staff were very friendly from my arrival to departure. The room was very clean and spacious and as previously stated the price of food and drink for a four star establishment was very reasonable.
The hotel is slightly out of the centre, but numerous buses run to and from the city centre and the metro is only a ten minute walk away and they run every three or four minutes. I would recommend this establishment and would happily stay there again.

One of the best hotels I ever stayed in.
Really great looking, friendly staff. Bar staff was actually very friendly and professional.

the prices for everything were really reasonable for a 4 star hotel. Why don't all hotels charge like they do, I will certainly buy more stuff.

Internet connection was great, bed was amazing, bathroom, desk, tv, etc were great. Everything spotless, squeeky clean!

Breakfast was plentiful, very good choice and good products.

The rack rate seems excessive, but I booked through the organisers of a conference and the rate was below 100 euros (not sure how much exactly now) and saw plenty of sites offering lower prices.

The hotel is in the nice area of Boavista, plenty of restaurants around. At the end of the street is the Boavista football club. That could bring a bit of traffic on match days but i did not experience that. If you are going to see a match in this stadium then perfect hotel.

Porto's old town is a fair walk from the hotel, and better take one of the many buses or taxis (around 4 euros from the hotel).

Really great hotel and with common sense service prices!!

  • Liked — library next to reception, with table, computer and lot of books of local interest and more
  • Disliked — just to be picky: when wet the first steps to enter the hotel are a bit slippery, no fall but guess some could
