I find nothing to complain about Margarida da Praca.

The hotel has fun, colorful rooms, flexible and friendly staff, nice table served breakfast and the location is very good, close to the river and the train station.

I stayed here three nights. Everything was comfortable and clean, my room was large, and the dinners we ate here were really good. We were across from the river, so had a nice view, but that also meant it was a bit noisy at night - my friends who had rooms in the back didn't have a view, but they did have a quieter night's rest.

We chose this on the basis of a glowing Lonely Planet review. On the plus side, the location of the hotel is excellent - it's very near the water, the main bars and attractions in town. The decor in the room was very romantic and stylish.

Unfortunately the air conditioning wasn't working in August so we had to keep the windows open all night - which was extremely noisy with traffic and partying outside. The restaurant was closed for refurbishment, there was no fridge or safe in the room, and we were served meat for breakfast despite noting that we were vegetarians.

We felt it was OK for an average-priced hotel but at the price we paid, we expected a little bit more.

The positives:
- the décor is very original, bright pink wallpaper and a general 'retro' feel to the whole place with chic/baroque lampshades, funky cushions, etc;
- the staff were helpful and pleasant;
- generally clean;
- the location is fantastic: right on the seafront with a stunning view (check out the 3rd floor terrace) and also a stone's throw from anywhere in town;
- nice touches in the room i.e. complimentary water, candles, etc.
- each room doesn't have a number but it's named after a flower/colour/fruit, etc. Again, nice original touch...good to stand out from the crowd.

The negatives:
- the hotel is starting to look tired. I imagine it looked 10 out of 10 perhaps five or so years ago, but it's probably in need of a quick makeover;
- you have to ask for a hairdryer. Why so???
- the bathroom is dark and dingy with panels coming off the shower.

I would, however, definitely recommend this hotel, as it was affordable (just over €50 per night) and it made our stay in Viana do Castelo comfortable and pleasant.

The good stuff - the staff is the best, very helpful and friendly. The breakfast had a number of choices and all was very good. The location is perfect and underground parking was only a few paces away. We liked the funky decor and the room was clean and the beds comfortable. Wifi was the fastest we've had on this trip yet.
The not so good - the in-room lighting is too dim. Sometimes you need the option of having a lot of light.

Other than the one complaint, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and can't say enough good things about the staff.

This is a great centrally located option in Viana do Castelo. We arrived without a reservation and we promptly served. I found the rooms and other hotel decor a little too colourful but it has obviously been tended to with care. This place is one of the only hotel breakfasts that I have found worth the €7 I paid (really nice yogurt, cereal, cheese and ham, bread, fruit). My only complaint was that the mattress wasn't very firm at all.

This is a tiny and characterful hotel in which you immediately feel at ease. The ambient and the rooms are simple but at the same time tastefully and meticulously decorated. My room had a nice tiny balcony facing a small beautiful pedestrian street of the town center behind the hotel. The bathroom was very clean and the high quality shower was working perfectly.

The staff is friendly and helpful, the check-in and check-out have been very quick.

The location is ideal too, inside the historic town center but also close to the main roads, you can get to the hotel entrance by car and you can reach the wide Praia do Cabedelo without go through the center tiny streets. You need just a 5 minutes walk to reach the restaurants in the fishing quarter if you don't want to stay in the center. Coming back late at night isn't a problem thanks to a practical main door opening with a 4 digit code.

Considering also the low price I can't think a better place to stay in Viana, I will stay here again.
