“Best bargain in Brussels”
Reviewed 31 May 2008

This hotel is run by a Chinese management to a great effect. It's a proper 4 star with excellent staff. Reception staff spoke flawless English, in addition to numerous other languages. Buffet breakfast is possibly slightly less than one would expect in such a four star hotel but equally satisfying. Rooms were large and comfortable. The only hitch is its location - just outside the red light district next to Brussel Noord station. But, on exiting the station you just have to turn left and walk underneath the flyover and the Chao Chow is right in front of you. On the other hand, Place Rogier and the main shopping street (Rue Neuve) is just to the other side of the hotel. Highly recommended and a great bargain for those fed up with the ripoff prices we pay in Brussels.

I stayed here for three nights. The rooms were spacious, comfortable and had the usual coffee making facilities etc.. The breakast is the reason for "strange" in the title of this review. No big fry-ups but plenty of noodles and yogurt!!!! the staff were lovely, very friendly and helpful and advised where to go/not to go. The receptionist was extremely helpful re. shops, dodgy areas to avoid, etc. etc. As we were a group of females tourists, first-time in Brussels, she advised on safe routes etc. as the area around the hotel wouldn't be the best (behind the Nord station).
The location is not ideal to say the least but the hotel itself is fine for a group weekend and for noodle-lovers everywhere!

Definitely not for the Irish. Bar closes 10.10 p.m. Beer and soft drinks were the only beverages available. Breakfast was a disaster. No variety either chinese, stale bread or yoghurt.

Rooms smelt musty. Toilets moved with you. Lifts were terrifying.

The staff are friendly.

Valuable lesson learnt: ALWAYS read the reviews before you book.

I read all of these reviews before booking Chao Chow Palace and most are fairly accurate to be honest., The area around can be quite intimidating for some, and lots of funny looks and busy, dodgy people hanging around, but hey, it's right bang in the middle of the red light district- what does one expect? The underpass which we walked through 4 times a day STANK of urine, it made my girlfriend gag, but i could handle it...just! But once you get over over the overall area, it's not too bad.

Chao Chow is a Chinese hotel, with all staff friendly and speaking great English and helpful too. The hotel itself DEFINATELY IS NOT of 4 star quality, although it's still nicely presented and rooms are large and clean. Breakfasts are interesting, with the lovely continental and strange spicy noodles option!!!

Overall, bad area, not a 4 star hotel but great value for money and great staff and clean, average hotel. Not recommended for young couples seeking good nightlife/ romantic trips or any famalies with children etc.

Hotel Chao Chow Palace, what can I say?

The hotel is less than a stones throw away from the local red light district. Infact it is in the centre of it. This can be a little intimidating for groups of females travelling alone. The hotel itself is a bit of a let down. It may be described as shabby but shique, however more shabby than shique!!!!!

The breakfast was interesting! Continental with also the choice of chow mein or what I can only describe as corn flour and water. No good after too much alcohol the evening before.

The staff were friendly enough, however the lifts are not for neither the largest of people nor the faint hearted.

The main town is only ten minutes walk although the hotel should supply oxygen masks for the underpass required to go through as there is a very strong stench of urine.

What can I say!

It's near the town but even nearer the red light district!! You can look out the window and have an evenings entertainment with the kerb crawlers, and boy racers all hassling the local ladies of the night. This could be potentially offputting to any potential guests returning to the hotel because be warned if you are female it can be intimidating.

The underpass directly across from the hotel has a very distinctive smell and a strong stomach is needed to pass through it.

Hotel is not as clean as it looks on the website. Its decor is a little shabby and dated. The lifts are a dare devil ride in themselves.

Breakfast is somewhat interesting you have to try it!!!!!

Would return to Brussels bit perhaps not to this hotel. But in all fairness the downside to the hotel and the location just made our stay more enjoyable.
