My husband and I recently returned from 10 nights at Sugar Ridge. WOW! From checking in to Checking out we absolutely loved every minute. The accomodation, spa and food were all equally fantastic, and the staff were genuinely friendly, helpful and happy.
We originally had planned to stay at Coco Bay but it was fully booked. Having taken a sneaky peak one morning we were glad fate intervened. Sugar Ridge was by far superior.
Both restaurants were lovely, we were part of the AI package and could not believe the standard of food and service available as part of it.
Vaugn's nature walk was great (beware the rum at the post office!) the beaches are gorgeous and the local bus to St Johns was an experience! Shirley Heights was ok but a Mecca for tourists. A definite must is the drive your own boats with West Coast Tours, a brilliant way to spend an afternoon.
We also ate at Al Porto in the marina twice, the food, atmosphere and staff were great. The fish and chip bus opposite Sugar Ridge is definitely an interesting experience, but expensive and not great when it has rained.
We have travelled extensively over the last ten years and have been priviledged to stay in some fantastic resorts. It is rare that we revisit a place but Sugar Ridge is definitely a keeper!

We stayed at Sugar Ridge the first 2 weeks of July and had the most wonderful time. We we're married there at the end of our first week and Jolie our wedding planner looked after us from start to finish. On arrival we upgraded our room to one of the rooms near to Carmichaels restaurant and the infinity pool and the room was lovely. We enjoyed the plunge pool on our veranda and relaxing after a day in the sun.

As other reviews have stated its the guys who work there that make a beautiful resort even better. They were all so friendly and helpful and nothing seemed too much trouble. Special thanks to Jolie, Sparkle, Kevin and Kevin, Marianne, Claydon, Cordell, Carleen, chef at sugar club restaurant, reception staff and Markis from the aveda salon who made me feel so special when he did my hair and make up on the morning of my wedding. We met Keith the manager at various times during our stay and he seemed genuinely interested in how we were enjoying our holiday.

We took a helicopter ride around the island and would recommend it. Of the 3 beaches that you can be taken on the shuttle bus we liked Gibsons the most with great service and comfy sun beds.

Food in both restaurants was lovely, we opted for the all inclusive and loved the tapas at Sugar Club in the afternoons.

We would definitely recommend this resort and plan to return next year to celebrate our first wedding anniversary.

Room Tip: Rooms 58-60 have the best views.

We just got back from a 6 day vacation in Antigua and stayed at Sugar Ridge Resort. Overall, this place was great! We ate at both the Sugar Club and Carmichaels and the food was always extremely good. Never had a bad meal the entire stay. The customer service was normally very good (with a couple exceptions, but you'll find that anywhere).

Like I mentioned, overall this place was really great. Just a couple things that could be improved upon, but I only mention them to try to help this place become even better than it already is. We visited the main pool several days, and sometimes someone would come out and see if you needed any food or drinks, and some days no one came..kinda frustrating. Also, it was hit or miss if we had hot water when taking a shower. Half the time, we were lucky to get slightly warm water. Other than those two things, the staff and hotel were wonderful. They seemed to genuinely care.

Another thing to know before you go: Low season is June-September, so since there's not a lot of tourists during that time, a lot of the restaraunts/bars are closed...kinda a bummer, but we understood why. Also, there was only about 40 people total staying at the hotel during our vacation. Some may love this aspect, but my husband and I are pretty social and like being around lots of other people, so we got somewhat bored:)

The best way for us to describe this hotel is this: It's much nicer than a Hilton hotel, but it's not the Four Seasons or Jumby Bay for that matter. However, at Jumby Bay, you'll pay $1000+ per day, and this hotel was very reasonably priced. We would definitely come back to this hotel and will also recommend it to our friends.

If you're wondering how much $$ you're going to spend coming to Antigua, I'll tell you that we stayed for 5 nights and spent $3000 total. That includes airfare, hotel, shuttle to/from the airport, insurance for the trip, food, drinks, and money for tipping. (Take lots of $5 and $10 bills for tipping) We spent on average about $150/night on dinner and drinks. We did not do the all inclusive plan, however we booked our trip on Expedia, and the trip included full breakfast every morning (which was excellent). We snacked for lunch or skipped all together, and then splurged on dinner. If you have room to pack snack items (chip bags, crackers, granola bars, etc...) you can snack on those at the beach.

I'd like to personally say thank you to a few staff members who were so amazing and had the best customer service: Rose, Casey, Vorn and Ieasha ( and all the front desk gals)---yall are incredible and deserve all the recognition you can get. You truly care about people and making sure guests have a great time. Thank you.

Room Tip: If you can, ask for a room number between 1-20..I think there's only 50 rooms total, but there are LOTS of stairs to climb to if you have a higher room number. We definitely got a work out!:)

Keith M, General Manager at Sugar Ridge Resort, responded to this reviewResponded 4 August 2012

I was delighted to read how much you enjoyed your stay at Sugar Ridge and have already passed on you appreciation not only to the staff that you mentioned in particular, but eveyone else on the team. I was sorry to learn that on some ocassions you did not receive service at the pool which I have since discussed with those concerned. I am sorry also that we did not have more guests for you to socialize with. Even though it is the low season - in all honesty we would normally expect to be considerably busier and can only put it down to too much Olympic fever. Thank you again for making your views known and we look forward to welcoming you back on a future ocassion and adding you to our rapidly expanding list of repeat guests.

From the friendly welcome and fruit punch at check in to the rose petal turn down and chilled Champagne waiting for us in our room nothing was too much trouble for the staff.
Our room was kept scrupulously clean by the house keeper with clean towels every day and fresh bedding at the request of a card on your pillow.
The room facilities were also excellent with an iPod docking station, plasma tv with pay per view movies and local area information to lovely bath robes and free wifi.
The plunge pool was fantastic to cool down with a fabulous view thrown in.
The staff at Carmichaels and The Sugar Club were wonderful Janine, Carleen, ONeil, Clayon and everyone else who's names escape me couldnt have been any more polite helpful and friendly having travelled the world I have never received such fantastic customer service.
Breakfast was amazing from a choice of five different types of pancake (caramelised banana buttermilk mmmmm) to eggs benedict and everything inbetween.
We didn't stay all inclusive but ate both lunch and dinner at The Sugar Club on a number of occasions, the club sandwich and club burger being highly recommended as well as the lobster, mahi and all the pasta dishes offered.
Carmichaels has an innovative menu with a good combination of flavours and themes.
Room service was quick and the quality of both The Sugar Club and Carmichaels was maintained.
Both pools were kept imnaculately clean, maintained every morning and regularly throughout the day. Pool service was excellent prompt and not over intrusive.
The gardens are amazing with so many different plants, flowers and trees all beautifully kept.
For a change of scenery we used the hotel shuttle every other day and Vorn was fantastic taking us to the best beaches on the island with the best food (especially Dennis') we would often get a ride to and from Jolly Harbour in the evening also although it is only a 5 minute walk away.
The staff at reception were also helpful with any queries we had and with their local knowledge were able to advise us on the best restaurants and places to visit.
Yes there are step steps and more steps but not anything too overwhelming and you can always get someone to take you up in one of the golf buggies.
And for the views you get for being high up the extra steps are worth it.
The hotels gym and spa services as the rest of the hotel were fantastic.
The hotel is ideally located just outside of Jolly Harbour.
The whole hotel has a private secluded feel to it perfect for rest and relaxation.
We will be back and can't wait.
