They thought of everything to make your stay a home away from home. The pool, like the villa, is roomy with even more space to 'stretch-out' on the verandah & pool deck. The laundry room with a guest lavatory & the Pack-and-Play were unexpected amenities along with a number of DVD's and board games for a rainy night indoors. Miss Hazel the Property Manager was very attentive & was always a text or phone call away. Money worth spent!
Myself, wife and two daughters thoroughly enjoyed our two week stay at Ffryes Villa which is conveniently positioned for visiting lovely beaches near by.
Hazel who manages house keeping was very helpful and attentive to our needs.
Ffryes Villa is very clean and comfortable with all the mod cons you would expect for a house of this specification.
We loved dinning on the terrace, alfresco for breakfast and evening meals and just watching the humming birds and others visiting!
You know when you have experienced a fantastic holiday when all three females are crying on the way to the airport - we didn't want to leave Antigua!!!
Thank you Ffryes Villa for a fantastic holiday and creating happy memories for the family.
I was working in Antigua and stayed here with a colleague for a few days and then we were joined by our wives.
Any issues were sorted by the lovely Hazel, no matter how small. the villa is ideally located close to beaches, restaurants and a supermarket. All of the grounds are beautifully maintained including the pool.
With all the facilities you need, this villa really is a great place to stay and Marianne really is a great owner as she has made it a real home.
Due back in antigua for work next year so I will be back!!
Just returned from a wonderful stay at Ffryes Villa (House). The house itself is very spacious, tastefully furnished and well-equipped with everything you’ll need for an enjoyable stay.
We had a car for our stay and managed to visit just about every corner of the island. Ffryes Villa is without doubt located in the very best spot on the island. It is part of the Hamilton Estate, a small development of just four properties off a main (but not at all busy) road, right next to the Sugar Ridge Resort where the England Cricket Team stayed during their tour of the Caribbean. It’s a short drive from Darkwood Beach, in our experience the best on the island for relaxing and snorkelling, though Jolly Beach and Ffryes Beach are also good and nearer. A ten minute walk away is Jolly Harbour (look out for the shortcut that runs from the West Coast Village) with its collection of restaurants and an Epicurean supermarket that sells a lot of Waitrose branded products as well as local and American import foods.
There are a number of really good restaurants within walking distance to the villa, some local cheap (for Antigua) eats, and some far more fancy and upmarket. We particularly liked Shenaaz Roti and curry which is literally across the road from the villa in the West Coast Village, a small collection of al fresco dining places.
The pool, like the sea, is not heated but is plenty warm enough to swim in even at the crack of dawn – yes we had children who did that! However, the picture of the pool on Tripadvisor is very old (possibly part of the original sales material by the developer?), and the person shown diving in to the pool must have been photoshopped in. The pool is now surrounded by mature trees giving it a much more private and tropical feel. It’s actually far better now than in the picture shown. We’d recommend updating the picture and removing the caption “perfect to dive into” as the owners (quite rightly) instruct that diving is not permitted on safety grounds.
Antigua has a consistently hot and humid climate. Fortunately, Ffryes Villa has air conditioning and fans in every room. Like all rental properties the owners ask guests not to use the air con unless absolutely necessary due to the high running costs. That’s fair enough. We found a good compromise at night was to have a quick blast of the air con (literally a couple of minutes) with the bedroom door shut, then leave the ceiling fan on to give a cooling breeze while sleeping. We slept perfectly, in fact rather too well since I think I’m going to have to buy a new bed as the villa’s was far more comfortable than the one we normally sleep on!
Bathroom facilities in the villa are excellent. The master bedroom has a walk-in shower with a shower head the size of a manhole cover. There is plenty of hot water.
There are mosquitos in Antigua, and there are at Ffryes Villa. Tempting though it is to sit outside to eat, drink and chat, make sure you put on insect repellent, and light the citronella candles (provided) before doing so or you’ll give the mossies a feast. We left it a couple of days before buying some fly spray for the house – this was a mistake. Buy yourself some and spray the house once you are inside with the doors shut and you’ll be fine. There is an abundance of wildlife in Antigua. Several attractive (Green Tree) lizards, Banaquits and Bullfinchs can been seen on the veranda every day. It’s wonderful to watch them while sipping a cool drink.
We had a potentially serious issue crop up while staying at Ffryes that could have ruined our entire stay. Though it was not at all related to the villa, the owners and their local representative (the wonderful) Hazel, dealt with it for us in such an exemplary way that I could not review the property without making reference to it and thanking them very sincerely for their help.
So in summary, Ffryes Villa is a wonderful place to stay in Antigua. A perfect villa, in a perfect location, run by helpful and honest owners, with a wonderful local representative. I can’t imagine anywhere better to stay.
On a more general note, there are a couple of pointers I’d give anyone planning on travelling to Antigua. The first is that the cost of living in Antigua is very high. Basic foodstuffs and boring things like detergent and suntan lotion are way more expensive than the uk. The experienced self-catering traveller to Antigua takes a small suitcase with them of basics like pasta. I know it sounds weird, but trust me you’ll save yourself a fortune compared to buying it over there. Also Antigua’s economy is almost entirely dependent on tourism and in particular cruise ship visits. If you visit in high season there will be a large number of ships visiting. They all run excursions to beaches and attractions meaning all of these will be much more busy than off-peak. We only had one ship in port during our stay, but that sent two bus loads of people to the beach we were visiting - fine if you like crowds, but we had become accustomed to having the beach to ourselves! There are websites that tell you when cruise ships are due to call at specific ports. When I visit again I'll make sure I check these out to ensure I visit at a quiet time.
We were a party of five adults who enjoyed Ffryes Villa and all of us agreed that we we didn't want to leave and that we would definitely would come back again and again. The rental process went very smoothly as did our arrival and departure thanks to Hazel, Lava and Don. The villa was spotlessly clean and we had all the amenities one could ask for. The beds and pillows were so, so comfortable and with the ceiling fan in the room the air conditioner was hardly necessary. Don was a wealth of information and we can't thank him enough for his suggestions, booking our catamaran tour of the island and his rum punch! Hazel's suggestion to dine at Miracle's the day we arrived starving after a delayed flight was so excellent that we chose to also make it our last dinner on the island. Miracle's is not a place you choose on appearance but the food was excellent as were the servers. Sunday evenings at Shirley Heights is a must-do. The steel drum band was awesome and watching the sunset over the harbor was breathtaking. Just relaxing on the veranda watching the hummingbirds, bananaquits (who love a little bowl of white sugar offered to them), lounging around the pool or taking a dip to cool off was the ideal day for us. There is a little road noise if you concentrate on it but we did not find it at all an inconvenience nor were we bothered by the nightly music from across the road. All in all, we had a glorious ten days.
This villa has everything you could ask for! Everything was clean and well maintained. It's in a great location with several restaurants and beaches within walking distance. All the caretakers (Don and Hazel) were super helpful. We would recommend renting their vehicle as it's very nice and there are so many places to explore on the island. We are having a hard time not booking this for our next vacation!!! We will be back someday!
The home, the location, the amenities were all absolutely outstanding. We could not have wished for a better stay at this gorgeous property and we will most certainly be back (as often as we possibly can!!).
Ffryes Villa is part of an estate of four properties but with it's own driveway, lush private yard, private pool and wrap around multi-tiered porch you feel like you're in our own serene and exclusive oasis (but with the added comfort of knowing there are a few friendly folk nearby).
The three generous sized bedrooms all have ensuite bathrooms and super efficient ceiling fans for those deliciously tropical nights. We picked up some plug-in mozzi repellers but the villa already had a few of these on hand and I would definitely recommend plugging them in at night as those pesky mozzi's like nothing more than to nibble on a tourist!
The kitchen is well equipped and fantastically laid out with a set of french doors opening straight out onto the patio where you can enjoy al fresco dining under the vaulted veranda. My favorite time here was first thing in the morning with a cup of fresh coffee (the villa has a great filtered coffee machine which was a huge bonus as soon many places we've stayed simply don't have any coffee making facilities!!).
Just a 3 minute drive (the villa has it's own car for hire! SO useful!) is the local supermarket, ATM's, bars, restaurants and Jolly Harbor where you can get all the supplies you need, enjoy fantastic food or rent boats / do water sports season depending. You can walk to the local beach but it takes about 20 minutes and as we often wanted to take a cooler with water etc we usually chose to do the 5 minute drive instead. There are really so many glorious beaches to explore so I'd recommend hoping in the car with your swims and going on a beach adventure! We certainly did! And if you're anything like me, who LOVES the sand on my feet at the beach, but HATES it between my toes when I get home, there is a great outdoor shower just inside the entry to the villa grounds which is both refreshing and fantastically efficient at sand blasting those lingering grains of sand for the OCD in me!
We really did have the most glorious time and just wish we could have stayed longer! All of the team who picked us up, dropped us off and were on call should we have needed anything were helpful and friendly and enhanced our trip no end. The owners, although we did not meet them have filled the villa with beautiful personal touches, hand crafted art and made sure everything is of the highest of standards. We fully recommend this villa to anyone considering spending time in Antigua and simply cannot wait to get back for some more 'liquid sunshine!' as the locals call it.
