“A perfect paradise!”
Reviewed 19 April 2014

We stayed here for 4 nights but could happily have stayed forever!

After a long, hot overnight journey from Bangkok by train, bus, ferry and taxi, it was lovely to receive such a warm welcome in the open air reception - a cool, scented towel, a refreshing ginger drink and a beautiful flower garland. The receptionist wished us a happy 25th wedding anniversary and then walked us through the lush gardens to our suite.......WOW!!!! From the pristine, luxurious furnishings of the interior to the complete privacy and comfort of the private pool and garden, we could not fault a thing.

Over the following days we were made to feel very special in so many ways by the most smiley, welcoming staff we have ever encountered. Everyone greets you with a wai and a sawadee and nothing is any bother. From glasses of iced water delivered to your sun lounger on the beach because "it's very hot today", to the lovely wee lady in the gift shop who is so friendly and pleased to help you, everyone we met at Sala Samui seemed determined to make our stay as perfect as possible.

The breakfast buffet was delicious - we especially appreciated the fresh juice menu as an antidote to the fabulous cocktails of the afternoon and evening happy hours! Lunch on the beach each day was great - ordered from the comfort of your sun lounger and brought to your little table so you don't even have to get up - sheer luxury! Dinners were amazing - fresh seafood, juicy steaks and mouth watering Thai salads - yum!

We were so sad to leave Sala Samui and can't wait to return. It really was like living in our own tropical paradise for a few days - we felt like royalty!

We been in Sala for 2 weeks, 1 kid 8.5 years and tweens 4.5. Sala is a perfect place if u want to have a quit family vacation. Choeng Mon is one of the quieter beaches; the kids can play on the perfect beach, with no worries.
If you want the noise and action of Chaweng then this is not for you!
As for the hotel, the team was perfect!! Always smiling, not only from the outside, also from the hurt, trying to do the best they can so we can enjoy.
We choose a pool villa that was great, the space of the villa is suitable for a family of 2 kids, and the bathroom is a dream, outside of the room, an experience that we loved.
Most of the day we were at the fun pool and the beach with the kids, in the afternoon we went to the black pool (that was kept more quit for the people who came without ids), to enjoy the hot water….
Breakfast was till 11 and the kids loved it, the adults for sure. Most of our lunches was by the pool and dinners at the restaurant, the food was perfect and we did not do much out of the hotel, no need.
We felt at home and enjoyed being part of the Sala family. Amanda, one of the reception team members was one of the amazing people we had a chance to meet in Sala, one of the kids was seek and she supported us with information and a hug. The hotel organized for us 2 trips, 1 was "around the island" – perfect!! And the other was a fishing private tour that the kids loved!!
The hotel also has kayaks that the guests can use.
I did not try the beautiful spa (was by myself with the kids, could not leave them), but I was told by another gest this was perfect. I had a massage on the beach where I could see my kids, this was perfect.
Dick, the manager of Sala was part of the team, he was always, around, you can approach him with any thought, idea, and request. It is clear that he is responsible for choosing best in class team that provides the unique spirit of the place.
It is a beautiful place; we will be back, hopefully soon.

Room Tip: Stay close to the beach....

very nice hotel in Choeng Mon, a 10-15 min taxi ride north of the main tourist area, up at the top of the island, not far from the airport.

Our family of 4 (2 teens) loved our 2 bedroom villa with private pool - it's really worth spending the extra for your own pool if you can. The 2 main pools are beautiful and right on the beach - very pretty. Restaurant was excellent - breakfast in particular was amazing with a great buffet, but also tasty and meticulously presented a la carte dishes, and daily specials. The 15 of so options on offer in the freshly prepared Juice bar was a particular highlight…we also had a couple of really first rate dinners as well, and enjoyed all we chose on the pool side menu.

There are a few other restaurants further down the beach, and a small local shopping street (money changer/small supermarket etc). Gym is adequate - about 7 or 8 machines, but was never busy. Lots of great massage options on the beach for 250-400Baht for an hour - such a great way to relax with the gentle breeze and the waves…

Taxi rank just outside hotel with published prices, so very easy to get around the island…. for shopping/bars/restauarants etc

The best part of the hotel is the staff, who despite being excellent and helpful, still manage to remain unobtrusive, yet always present, and would always exceed expectations by their actions and reactions to requests.

we will return

We had high hopes after reading all the great reviews about Sala, and boy we were not disappointed!! The resort is stunning, the staff are excellent, the restaurant is superb, the breakfasts are something else! We had a Sala Pool Villa and it was beautifully clean and well laid out. It was our 25th Wedding Anniversary and we were spoiled rotten by the staff. The staff really are a credit to this resort, they are so friendly and can't do enough for you. The beach is fantastic the sea lovely to swim in. Take a walk up the beach of an evening an enjoy some food at the other beach front restaurants. Out front of the resort you'll find an array of shops and bars and restaurants within a 10 minute walk. There are cashpoints and exchange places in abundance too.

This really is a place you must visit and we'll certainly be going back in a hurry! Well done to Dick (The GM) you really do have a resort to proud of there and the staff compliment it perfectly. Wawa was an absolute joy in the restaurant!

Room Tip: Spend the extra to get a pool villa, it's a god send as it get hot out there!!

What a fantastic two weeks we spent here.
I can only underline everyone else's views about the food, staff, location and resort in general.

I'll try not go over old ground and offer a few tips:

The Beach. Massages to the right start at 250 Baht for a Thai Massage. They will offer you oil which whacks another 150 on top and even a foot scrub which adds 400 baht more! Not a fortune but don't turn up with 250 baht stuffed in your shorts eh?
The little old fella to the right who pitches up next day charges 50 baht for anything and everything you buy from him. A whole pineapple, loving carved, a barbecued corn on the cob, kebabs or a fresh coconut drink. His name is Coppi, nice fella, always smiling. Beach sellers: always cheaper to wait and go to Fishermans Village on a Friday evening, they do all the stuff the beach sellers do at half the price. Taxi 300 baht there, 400 back.... but worth a visit esp if fake watches, bags and sunglasses are you thing.

Local shops etc. Cash point was giving me baht at 53.5 to a £1 but charges 180 baht for withdrawal so do larger amounts less often. Good local Restaurant is Longtable where you can get a couple of dishes (Thai Green curry/Sweet and sour with rice and a couple of drinks for 500 baht (£10). Just round the corner in the massage shop they will do all you washing and ironing for a few £ so you can just put it back in you case when you leave for home!

Wonderful wonderful people. It was a privilege to be there with these happy welcoming people.

Just do it!

Spent 6 nights here with my friend from Oz. We are both in our 40's and this was a perfect place for us to relax and catch up. We had a garden pool room which was lovely. The outdoor bathroom was novel - I loved it. The resort is beautiful, clean abd has a really calm atmosphere. The staff are very attentive and loved the iced water brought regularly to us on the beach. The setting at the Sala is lovely but if if you fancy a change of scenery there are several other places to eat and drink along the beach. Chewang is a 15 minute drive away if you want something more lively in the evening. I couldn't fault this place - great to unwind and completely relax.

We decided on Sala for our honeymoon-9 nights in their Sala pool villa. We arrived early from our flight and our room wasn't ready, understandably, we were kindly offered to wait in the restaurant over a complimentary breakfast. It was a perfect solution, we needed a coffee.

The room
The room was made up beautifully with petals on the bed and in the bath, a bottle of icey champagne and AMAZING chocolates awaited us. We had complimentary honeymoon vouchers for two 1hr thai massage, half hour stress release massages, and a three course meal in the Sala restaurant. The beautiful bathroom was outdoors, the pool was very clean and the room was spacious. There is a twice a day service to your room.
We were lucky enough to receive an upgrade for our last three nights to a suite... What a delight- everything in this room is bigger (including the pool) and you have a lounge room. I would recommend upgrading at the end of your holiday, it is so nice to experience a different room, it's like a second holiday.

Complimentary Breakfast
You have access to an al a carte menu, and an extensive buffet (not many cooked options, but still with an egg station) and a very extensive juice bar. The coffee is delicious with a choice from their expresso machine. My ideal breakfast especially when you are staying over a week -we tried almost everything and it was all good.
The service did slump a bit in the middle of our holiday with forgotten orders and not being able to wave anyone down, however it was back to high standards at the end (lots of management were around then).

Restaurants
Both the restaurants food is fantastic and well priced compared to the restaurants we visited at other resorts... Pangaea was outstanding, serving 5 star Italian cuisine- I have never had Italian that good, not in Australia or Italy.
We highly recommend thai buffet at Sala restaurant on Thursday night. They display a full thai menu (delicious salads).
All wine was stored correctly (my husband is a winemaker) none were heat affected and we bought four bottles all of which we enjoyed (the complimentary bubbles isn't amazing but then again we prefer champagne).

Spa
Lovely massages... Ask for Ann. The prices are quite extravagant (more than Australia) but it is very luxurious.

Helpfulness
The front desk can help with anything- especially Amanda. I cannot express our gratitude enough for her assistance- she speaks perfect English and helped us immensely. We booked a boat trip to koh Tao which was amazing- we went on the trip with 30ppl (the exclusive one was booked out) for 2100baht each. It was really good, it didn't feel over crowded, the snorkelling wasn't the best we've seen but still a good trip to do.

Koh Samui is very different to other Thai Island, everyone is relaxed, locals are friendly and they are not there to rip you off. You pay a little bit more for everything but you are paying for peace of mind that you haven't been ripped off. Manners and respect to the local people goes a long way. In saying this, always be careful with your belongings and don't walk quiet streets at night.

Location
Ideal location, we travelled around the whole island and have decided cheong mon beach is the place to stay. The beach is a bit better in Chaweng in front of Poppies, but here you are removed from the hustle and bustle of the street. The restaurants along Cheong Mon are great, Longtable, Aroma, Grill House- Wednesday street market - yummy gyro pita. Hire a motorbike (it very safe) and head to fishermans village bophut - it has great restaurants too and Friday night market is a good time to go.

Thank you Sala for the best honeymoon we could have ever imagined. The Resort is absolutely beautiful and has such a relaxing vibe. It is a very comfy place and not too fancy, it has soo much character.
